Chart Chat Edition 635 – Week Commencing Sunday 22nd January 2012

There were six new entries, one re-entry, seven climbers, twenty two songs going down and four non movers on this weeks chart. Only eleven songs held on for more than a week last year but Jessie J becomes the first act to do just that in 2012 as ‘Domino’ secured a second week at the top. Rizzle Kicks became her nearest rival as ‘Mama Do The Hump’ climbed one to no.2 and David Guetta featuring Sia went up five to no.3 with ‘Titanium’.

Swedish House Mafia vs Knife Party went straight in at no.4 while Flo Rida slipped three to no.5 with ‘Good Feeling’.  Lloyd featuring Andre 3000 & Lil Wayne fell one to no.6 with ‘Dedication To My Ex’ and Avicii went down three to no.7 with ‘Levels’. Pixie Lott climbed six to no.8 with ‘Kiss The Stars’ and Taio Cruz fell three to no.9 with ‘Troublemaker’.  Coldplay rounded off the top ten with ‘Paradise’ going down three to no.10. A further two climbers were to be found in the top twenty.  Kelly Clarkson climbed ten to no.11 with ‘Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You)’ and Pitbull featuring Chris Brown went up ten to no.13 with ‘International Lover’.

Gotye featuring Kimbra went up fifteen to no.21 with ‘Somebody That I Used To Know’ while Cher Lloyd entered at no.26 with ‘Want U Back’.  One Direction went straight in at no.28 with ‘One Thing’ and Skepta climbed one to no.31 with ‘Hold On’. Pitbull featuring Ne-Yo, Afrojack & Nayer re-entered at no.32 with ‘Give Me Everything’ and Skillrex & The Doors went straight in at no.33 with ‘Breakn A Sweat’. M83 got a new entry at no.35 with ‘Midnight City’ while Etta James went straight in at no.39 with ‘At Last’ enjoying a surge of popularity following her passing earlier this week.

Arctic Monkeys have topped the charts with each of their four studio albums and have also managed eight top forty singles including two no.1’s. This week sees the release of ‘Black Treacle’ as the fourth single to be taken from their most recent album ‘Suck It & See’ and as with the previous singles it gets a 7″ vinyl release with a previously unreleased b side. They are set to tour the US in March along with the Black Keys and if their UK shows were anything to go by then the Americans will be in for a treat. According to Alex Turner the band will be taking time out this year before heading back to the studio and out on the road again in 2013.  Some rumours suggest Turner will return to his other project The Last Of The Shadown Puppets but that has yet to be officially confirmed. Given the fact that their last two singles missed the top 100 I can’t see this troubling the top forty next Sunday.

Big Team Rush have teamed up with Mann on their new single ‘Music Sounds Better With U’.  The band are the stars of a reality TV show which airs on the Nickelodeon channel.  Their debut album ‘B.T.R.’ made no.14 in the UK although they have yet to achieve any top forty hits. It’s a similar situation in their native US as their biggest single was ‘Boyfriend’ which saw them team up with Snoop Doog but it only peaked at no.72. Mann has made two previous appearances on the UK chart where he made the top ten guesting on 50 Cent’s hit ‘Buzzin’ (Remix)’ and then got to no.28 in his own right with ‘The Mack’ which saw him team up with Snoop Dogg and Iyaz.  The bands second album ‘Elevate’ is due to hit UK stores later this year but it has already made the top twenty in the US.  I’m not sure that this will chart although their series has been recomissioned for a third time so they are obviously doing something right!

Cover Drive are a four piece band from Barbados who notched up their first top forty hit last year with ‘Lick Ya Down’.  They were named after the cricketing term due to the sports popularity in the Carribean and are headed up by Manda on lead vocals plus fellow members Bar-Man, T-Ray and Jamar.  Fans wishing to know more about them can check out the website which has such random facts as the band eat at Nando’s every day and all have dogs. The band have been featured as one of T4’s Rising Stars of 2012. They have their own online weekly TV show which airs at 4pm on a Friday and they have posted various cover versions online including ‘Tik Tok’ by Kesha and ‘Aeroplanes’ by B.o.B.. This week sees the release of ‘Twilight’ as the follow up and both that and its predecessor will feature on their forthcoming album ‘Bajan Style’. They have a strong mentor in Eddy Grant and will light up the charts with this next week.

Twenty five year old New York born singer / songwriter Lana Del Ray reached the top ten last year with her ‘Video Games’ single and has since featured in many of the end of year polls that try to tell us who to watch out for in the year ahead. She released her debut self titled album in 2010 but achieved very little success.  Her new album ‘Born To Die’ is out this month and this week sees the release of the title track as a single. Lana herself created the concept behind the video that accompanies the track although it was directed by Yoann Lemoine who has previously worked with Katy Perry on ‘Teenage Dream’ and Taylor Swift on ‘Back To December’.  It will have to go some if it is to match the success of its predecessor but she has a stunning voice with looks to match which should guarantee her plenty of airplay on both TV and radio stations.

If you read the list of who has been in Roll Deep then it is like a who’s who of the British Grime scene with former members including Dizzee Rascal, Tinchy Stryder and Skepta.  Their last album yielded the no.1 hits ‘Good Times’ (which featured Jodie O’Connor) and ‘Green Light’ (which featured Tania Foster). They also reached the top thirty with ‘Take Control’ which saw them team up with former Strictly Come Dancing judge Alesha Dixon.  Despite their commercial success on the singles chart their last album ‘Winner Stays On’ only reached no.55 which was five places short of the peak achieved by their debut album ‘In At The Deep End’ back in 2005.  They are on the verge of releasing a fifth studio album and this week sees the release of ‘Picture Perfect’ as a single from it. If it can pick up some mainstream airplay then this could easily find itself in the top ten next weekend.

‘Never Be A Right Time’ sees British rapper Professor Green team up with Ed Drewett on the follow up to his massive no.1 hit single ‘Read All About It’.  That was his fifth hit in a career which has also featured the top five singles ‘I Need You Tonight’ (which also saw him team up with Drewett) and ‘Just Be Good To Green’ (which saw Lily Allen join him on vocal duties).  His album ‘At Your Inconvenience’ reached no.3 on its release last year which was a solid follow up to his no.2 debut album ‘Alive Till I’m Dead’. He had first come to public attention when he one the MySpace JumpOff competition back in 2008 and he also worked with Lily Allen on her 2009 tour.  He is signed to the Virgin label and has been able to crossover into commercial success without a huge compromise in his sound. This could well give him another top ten hit next Sunday afternoon.

Bon Iver released their debut album ‘For Emma, Forever Ago’ back in 2008 and although it only reached no.42 in the chart it sold steadily and was granted Gold status for the sales it eventually achieved.  The steady build in fanbase was evident on the follow up album ‘Bon Iver, Bon Iver’ which peaked at no.4 last year. Their main success so far on the singles chart has been the curiously titled ‘Blood Bank’ which was released as part of its own EP and made no.16 in the US and no.37 in the UK.  ‘Towers’ is the third single to be taken from their current album and follows on from ‘Holocene’ and ‘Calgary’.  They performed the track on Jools Holland back in October and it has become a live favourite with fans.  It follows on from a digital only deluxe reissue of ‘Bon Iver, Bon Iver’ but based on their chart history I can’t see this coming too close to the top forty.

Errors are a four piece band from Glasgow who are signed to Mogwai’s Rock Action Records label. Their first single was ‘Hans Herman’ back in 2005 and now they are set to release their third studio album ‘Have Some Faith In Magic’ next week.  Fans can already download the track ‘Earthscore’ for free from the bands website, and this week sees the release of ‘Pleasure Palaces’ as an official single. The track has been playlisted by Indie station XFM and they are about to embark on a UK tour during February which commences in Newcastle and rounds off in Aberdeen sixteen days later. They will then return to their home city of Glasgow in May for a headlining show at The Arches.  This single is likely to show on the Indie chart but I can’t see this selling in the kind of volumes needed to land inside the mainstream top forty chart.

Sia is already enjoying success through her guest appearance on David Guetta’s single ‘Titanium’ but she is also featured on Flo Rida’s new single ‘Wild Ones’.  It’s the second single to be taken from his forthcoming studio album ‘Only One Rida (Part 2)’ which is due for release in March and it follows on from the success of ‘Good Feeling’ which topped the charts earlier this month. The song entered the American charts at no.57 and has topped the charts in both Australia and New Zealand. It has also managed to make the top ten in Sweden and Finland. So far he has enjoyed eight top forty hits including three no.1s while he has also guested on Alexandra Burke’s chart topper ‘Bad Boys’. It remains to be seen whether this can add another hit to his tally but I certainly don’t think that it will do enough to give him another no.1 single.

Also released this week are ‘Dougou Badia’ by Amadou & Mariam featuring Santogold, ‘Love Blood’ by King Charles, ‘Get Out Of My Hear’ by Redlight and ‘Living In The Shadow Of The Terrible Thing’ by Therapy.

It looks like its a head to head next weekend between Jessie J and Cover Drive but I’m backing the latter to score a debut no.1 hit. Don’t forget to stop by next week when artists releasing new singles look set to include Feeder, Lil Wayne featuring Bruno Mars, Pixie Lott and Youngman.  Until then have yourself a good week.
