Chart Chat Edition 639 – W/C 19.02.12

Chart Chat Edition 639 – Week Commencing Sunday 19th February 2012

There were three new entries, five re-entries, five climbers, twenty five songs going down and two non movers on this weeks chart. It was all change at the top as DJ Fresh went straight in at no.1 with ‘Hot Right Now’ meaning that Emeli Sande had to settle for the runners up spot for the second time in her three solo singles with ‘Next To Me’ entering the charts at no.2.

Gotye featuring Kimbra fell two to no.3 with ‘Somebody That I Used To Know’ while ‘Titanium’ by David Guetta featuring Sia fell two places to no.4. Flo Rida featuring Sia climbed back up a place to no.5 with ‘Wild Ones’ but former no.1 ‘Domino’ by Jessie J went down two to no.6. Alyssa Reid featuring Jump Smokers fell two to no.7 with ‘Alone Again’ and Will.i.am featuring Jennifer Lopez & Mick Jagger went down five places to no.8 with ‘T.H.E. (The Hardest Ever)’. One Direction climbed seventeen places to no.9 with ‘One Thing’ while the final place in the top ten went to Cover Drive who fell three to no.10 with ‘Twilight’.

One new entry and two re-entries were to be found in the remainder of the top twenty. Whitney Houston re-entered at no.14 with ‘I Will Always Love You’ and Nicki Minaj got a new entry with ‘Starships’ at no.16. The other re-entry also went to Whitney Houston with her former no.1 ‘I Wanna Dance With Somebody’.

There were three re-entries and three climbers in the lower half of the chart.  Lil Wayne featuring Bruno Mars climbed fifteen places to no.23 with ‘Mirror’ while Charlene Soraia went up four to no.31 with ‘Wherever You Will Go’. Rebecca Ferguson climbed two to no.32 with ‘Nothing’s Real But Love’ and Emeli Sande re-entered at no.35 with ‘Heaven’.  Adele capitalised on her success at the Grammy Awards as ‘Rolling In The Deep’ re-entered at no.39 and Whitney Houston re-entered at no.40 with ‘One Moment In Time’.

Cher Lloyd has already enjoyed a great start to her career with ‘Swagger Jagger’ topping the charts and the follow up ‘With Ur Love’ reaching the top five.  New single ‘Want U Back’ is released this week and it has already made no.26 thanks to downloads of the album version.  The single version also features a contribution from rapper Astro and the download also contains the Acoustic version, the Cahill Remix and the Pete Phantom Remix. She has been signed by L.A.Reid to the Epic label in the States where she looks set to release her album later this year.  Regardless of the success of this single she has proven enough to be granted a second album.  While ‘Swagger Jagger’ was annoying, this is actually a decent pop song which comes accompanied by a video shot in Los Angeles. This release should see it go back up the chart, but by how much remains to be seen.

Foo Fighters release their new single ‘These Days’ this week.  It’s another track lifted from their ‘Wasting Light’ album which topped the charts earlier this year. Of their previous releases from the album only ‘Rope’ (#22) reached the top forty, with ‘Arlandia’ and ‘Walk’ both falling short. This track has topped the Canadian alternative charts and made no.9 in the US rock chart. Butch Vig produced the track and Dave Grohl wrote it, claiming it is his favourite song that he has ever written.  They have notched up twenty one top forty hits across their career with three of those going on to reach the top five. ‘Best Of You’ remains their highest charting single, peaking at no.4 back in 2005. With so many fans owning the album its hard to see this charting well, especially considering that it is now the fourth single release.  As such I don’t expect to see it inside the top forty next weekend.

Twenty year old r’n’b singer Rachel Adedeji is a name perhaps most familiar to viewers of the X Factor TV show where she finished 9th two years ago.  She had reached the final 50 in the 2008 series but had failed to make it to the Judges Houses section of the show.  Things worked out much better for her a year further on when she formed one of the finalists in the Girls category mentored by Dannii Minogue. She went on to recorded her debut single ‘Follow The DJ’ last year but it was never released.  Now this week sees her release the new track ‘Club Nights’ as a full single and it has been gaining additional attention after it was featured on Tinie Tempah’s blog.  The video was shot in black and white and was directed by Drew Cox.  Sadly there is a risk that she has become forgotten like so many stars of previous series and I can’t see this getting the airplay it would require to be a hit.

‘Ass Back Home’ is the latest single by Travie McCoy’s band Gym Class Heroes which sees them team up with Neon Hitch. The track is released as the follow up their Adam Levine collaboration ‘Stereo Hearts’ which made no.3 in the UK and the top ten around the world including the US, Australia, Ireland and Canada. It’s the second single to be lifted from their ‘The Papercut Chronicles II’ album which was released at the end of last year. The first volume was released back in 2005 but did not chart anywhere.  All four of their UK top forty hits have made the top ten with ‘Stereo Hearts’ matching the no.3 peak achieved by ‘Cupid’s Chokehold’, the bands first UK hit.  So far ‘Ass Back Home’ has made the top twenty in the US, Canada and Australia and features a video directed by Dugan O’Neal so we can expect it to achieve similar success this side of the Atlantic.

While she has yet to notch up a top forty single Anna Calvi did make no.40 last year on the album chart with her self titled debut ‘Anna Calvi’. She was nominated in the BBC Sound Of 2011 poll, the Mercury Music Prize later that year and also this years Brit Awards (for Best British Breakthrough Act). This week sees her release a French version of last years single ‘Jezebel’.  The single was originally written by Wayne Shanklin back in 1951 and was recorded by Frankie Laine.  However both Charles Aznavour and Edith Piaf recorded a French language version of the song and it is their version which she covers this time around.  It’s every bit as percussion heavy as the English language version she recorded last year although the production has been stepped up.  It would be fantastic if this was to secure her a debut UK top forty hit.

Matt Cardle releases his fourth single ‘Amazing’ this week.  He opened his account with ‘When We Collide’ which was the Christmas no.1 in 2010 selling 439k in its first week of release while the Gary Barlow penned follow up ‘Run For Your Life’ peaked at no.6.  The third single was ‘Starlight’ which only made no.185 although the Alias Club Remix of the track was a success, reaching no.2 in the Commerical Pop Top 30 Club Chart. With the relative failure of that to set the charts on fire its hard to see ‘Amazing’ doing much better.  This time around it forms part of an EP along with his cover of ‘The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face’, a live version of ‘Slowly’ and the new track ‘All Is Said’ which was written with James Walsh and Elliot James. Fans keen to own those tracks may well improve sales but I’m not sure that it will restore him to the top forty.

Kasabian have notched up twelve top forty hit singles over their career and four top five albums with the last three all going straight in at the top of the charts. Four of their singles have made the top ten with the biggest being ‘Fire’ which made no.3 back in 2009. This week sees the release of ‘Goodbye Kiss’ as the third single to be taken from their ‘Velociraptor!’ album which has so far seen opening single ‘Days Are Forgotten’ make no.28 but the follow up ‘Re-Wired’ only got to no.96. They are nominated for the Best Live Band and Best British Band at this years Brit Awards so we will know the results of that this week.  They already have three NME’s, two Q Awards, one Mojo and one Brit in their locker already so few can dispute their pedigree. I’m not sure that this will sell enough to chart for them but they can still be proud with how the album has performed.

British singer / songwriter Gemma Ray teams up with 1970’s legends Sparks on her new single ‘Sing Sparks With Sparks’ which is available on 7″ vinyl and download formats.  The release sees her cover two of the bands classic songs ‘How Do I Get To Carnegie Hall’ and ‘Eaten By The Monster Of Love’.  She is currently playing a series of gigs in Europe before heading off for more live performances in the States. Former Led Zepplin guitarist Jimmy Page is amongst her legion of fans while a BBC review suggested that she really should be a household name already. What she needs is a decent break which has so far eluded her.  This quirky single demonstrates her vocal talents while offering something truly original against the current predictable chart backdrop.  Deserves to be a hit but something inside me doubts we will find it in the top forty next weekend.

Damian “Jr Gong” Marley is the youngest son of the legendary Jamaican reggae singer Bob Marley who died back in 1981. Now aged 33 he achieved his first top forty hit back in 2005 with ‘Welcome To Jamrock’.  Since then he has also charted as a guest on Nas’s single ‘As We Enter’ and also in his own right with ‘Beautiful’ which saw him team up with Bobby Brown.  He also has two top ten albums in the US to his name while more recently he has teamed up with Joss Stone, Mick Jagger, AR Rahman and Dave Stewart to form the supergroup Superheavy. This week sees the release of his new solo single ‘Affairs Of The Heart’ which was first played on Robbo Ranx BBC 1Xtra Radio Show. I’m not confident that it will gain enough mainstream airplay for it to become a commercial hit though the dancehall feel may help it to achieve some degree of crossover success.

Also released this week are ‘Pictures’ by Benjamin Frances Leftwich, ‘Mrs Right’ by Mindless Behaviour featuring Chipmunk, ‘Lafaye’ by School Of Seven Bells and ‘Another Bed’ by Twilight Sad.

I can’t see any of the new entries listed putting in a serious challenge at the top so the battle for no.1 is likely to feature the same top three contenders. Don’t forget to stop by next week when artists releasing new singles look set to include Darren Hayes, The Drums, East 17 and Jason Derulo.  Until then have yourself a good week.
