Chart Chat Edition 654 – W/C 03.06.12

Chart Chat Edition 654 – Week Commencing Sunday 3rd June 2012

There were eight new entries, three climbers, twenty seven songs going down and two non movers on this weeks chart.  It was all change at the top with ‘Feel The Love’ by Rudimental featuring John Newman going straight in at the top while new entries from Loreen and Lawson also made the top five.  The chart was also notable for those artists dropping short with Kylie stuck at no.31 with her new single ‘Timebomb’, Alexandra Burke only entering at no.33 with ‘Let It Go’ and Justin Bieber going in at a lowly no.34 with ‘Die In Your Arms’.

American rapper and singer / songwriter Flo Rida looks destined for another big hit with his new single ‘Whistle’ which is released this week. It comes released digitally with two new mixes, the Digi Remix and the Jakob Lido Remix. He has previously topped the charts three times as a solo artist and has also appeared on Alexandra Burke’s no.1 hit ‘Bad Boys’.  His most recent success was ‘Good Feeling’ which reached the top spot earlier this year having been assisted by the songs use in an advertisement for the First Choice holiday firm. This latest release has already topped the charts in Australia and New Zealand so should put in a serious challenge at the top end of next weeks chart. It is certain to become his sixth top ten hit and will kick start the promotion to his new album ‘Wild Ones’ which is scheduled for release later on this Summer.

Former X Factor contestant Aiden Grimshaw releases his new single ‘Is This Love’ this week. Originally from Blackpool, he started out life at the Michael Hall Theatre School and appeared on the CBBC show Half Moon Investigations before he auditioned for X Factor.  He survived on the show until week 6 where he lost out to Katie Waissel on the public vote following the judges failure to reach a decision.  While the eventual winner Matt Cardle has since been (and in some ways gone), Aiden has taken his time regarding his debut album ‘Misty Sky’ which is due for release in August this year.  The video that accompanies the track was released to YouTube at the end of April but only features Aiden for two seconds as an extra! The single has been gaining positive reviews and was co-written with Athlete frontman Joel Pott.  This should find its way into the charts next weekend although I think a top ten placing might be beyond him.

‘Big Hoops (Bigger The Better)’ is the brand new single from Canadian singer Nelly Furtado and is taken from her first English language album in six years ‘The Spirit Indestructible’ which is set for release in a couple of weeks time.   She claims that the sound of her new album will be much closer to her debut ‘Whoa Nelly’ with her recent influences said to include Florence & The Machine, The XX and Janelle Monae. Her only no.1 hit came with ‘Maneater’ back in 2006 but she has had nine other top forty hits across her career.  She was also credited on Timbaland’s no.1 single ‘Give It To Me’ which saw her team up with Justin Timberlake while her duet with James Morrison on ‘Broken Strings’ reached no.2.  Her last top forty appearance came on another Timbaland track, ‘Morning After Dark’, which peaked at no.6 back in 2009 and also featured SoShy. This could well be challenging at the top end of the chart next weekend.

DJ Fresh topped the charts earlier this year with his Rita Ora collaboration ‘Hot Right Now’ and this week sees the release of the follow up ‘The Power’ which this time sees him team up with Dizzee Rascal. As well as being an artist in his own right he also owns / runs the Breakbeat Kaos label with fellow drum’n’bass star Adam F. His first album ‘Escape From Planet Monday’ was released back in 2006 with the follow up ‘Kryptonite’ coming four years later.  He enjoyed some minor hits early on in his career but it was ‘Gold Dust’ in 2010 which first saw him in the top forty.  Last year saw him team up with Sian Evans on the no.1 hit ‘Louder’ so if this latest release can top the charts he will make it three in a row.  The video to the track first appeared in mid April was directed by Rohan Blair-Mangat and was shot in Miami during the Winter Music conference. This looks certain to be one of the challengers for the top spot next weekend.

Actress and singer Preeya Kalidas releases her latest single ‘Love Between Us’ this week.  While she has appeared in a variety of TV shows she is perhaps most famous for her role as Amira Masood in Eastenders. She guested on Skepta’s 2010 single ‘Cross My Heart’ which reached no.31 and has so far given her her only top forty appearance.  Following her departure from Eastenders she released the single ‘Shimmy’ which featured Mumzy Stranger but despite appearances on various BBC shows the single failed to chart. This saw her dropped by Universal Records but she signed up with All Around The World following her appearance at the UK Asian Music Awards where she won Best Female Act.  Her album is scheduled for a Summer release and will feature her previous single ‘It’s A Problem, ‘Shimmy’ and her latest release. For me I fear this new single may also struggle to make an impact in the top forty.

Liverpudlian singer Marcus Collins has wasted no time in getting his material out following his success in being the runner up on last years X Factor competition. During the competition he was mentored by Gary Barlow and afterwards he became signed to RCA Records. His debut single was a cover of White Stripes ‘Seven Nation Army’ and it saw him secure a first top ten hit, peaking at no.9. His self titled album made no.7 and now comes the release of the follow up single ‘Mercy’. For me this is one of the most commercial tracks on there, and its good to see it released ahead of another cover such as his take on Jackie Wilson’s ‘Higher & Higher’.  The music business is proving harder than ever to establish longevity within it and is probable that Collins has done the right thing while the eventual winners Little Mix are slowly being forgotten about.  This should chart for him, but could well miss out on the top ten.

Award winning singer Kelly Clarkson is back again this week with her new single ‘Dark Side’ which is the follow up to her recent top ten hit ‘Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You)’. The accompanying video is directed by Shane Drake who also worked on the promotional film to her that last single. She originally came to prominence after winning American Idol in the States and has enjoyed her biggest success across the water but has still managed to notch up a total twelve top forty hits in the UK.  Of those eight have made the top ten including her only no.1 to date ‘My Life Would Suck Without You’.   I can’t quite see ‘Dark Side’ matching that achievement but it should pick up a decent level of airplay and as such could well add to her top ten tally.  If successful it will become the third top ten hit from her current long player ‘Stronger’ which in turn has become her fourth consecutive top five album in the UK.

Newcastle based band Maximo Park return this week with their new single ‘Hips & Lips’ which is the first track to be lifted from their fourth studio album ‘The National Health’. The single is released on 7” vinyl where it also features the new track ‘Is It True’ while it will also be made available to download. It marks the first release since their last studio album ‘Quicken The Heart’ which made no.6 back in 2009 despite containing no hit singles. They have notched up eight top forty hits across their career including ‘Apply Some Pressure’ which charted on two separate occasions while ‘Our Velocity’ remains their only top ten hit having peaked at no.9 in 2007. I think that fans may opt to wait for the new album rather than buying this as a standalone track though collectors may well be interested in the vinyl edition. Given this fact I’m not sure that this will find its way into next Sunday’s top forty.

British rapper Professor Green is back this week and he teams up with singer Ruth Anne on his new single ‘Remedy’. It’s the third single from his current album ‘At Your Inconvenience’ which has already yielded his Emeli Sande collaboration ‘Read All About It’ which topped the charts and the top forty follow up ‘Never Be A Right Time’ which featured Ed Drewett. So far he has enjoyed a total of six top forty hits in his career with half of those reaching the top three. He has also guested on singles by True Tiger and Tinchy Stryder. He won Breakthrough Artist Of The Year at the BT Awards in 2010, the Best Hip Hop / Grime Award at the MOBO’s in 2011 and Best Dancefloor Filler at the NME Awards last year for his single ‘Jungle’.  It has already charted inside the top thirty ahead of its full release and while I think this will do well for him I can’t really see this adding to his tally of top five successes.

Also released this week are ‘Major’ by Asteroids Galaxy Tour, ‘Elevate’ by Big Time Rush, ‘Sing 4 England’ by Chris ‘Kammy’ Kamara, ‘Princess Of China’ by Coldplay featuring Rihanna, ‘The Face (EP)’ by Disclosure, ‘Overload’ by Dot Rotten, ‘I Believe’ by Full Circle, ‘Daylight’ by Graham Gouldman, ‘Bayini’ by Gurrumul featuring Sarah Blasko, ‘Night & Day’ by Hot Chip, ‘Moonshine’ by Katie Melua, ‘Run To You’ by Leanne Mitchell, ‘Headphones’ by Little Boots and ‘Scream’ by Usher.

Next Sunday’s chart looks set to be influenced by the Jubilee concert so I expect Gary Barlow to climb to the top although Flo Rida could yet put in a strong challenge. Don’t forget to stop by next week when artists releasing new singles look set to include Cheryl Cole, Jay-Z & Kanye West, Trey Songz and X-Press 2 featuring Alison Limerick.  Until then have yourself a good week.
