Chart Chat Edition 656 – W/C 17.06.12

Chart Chat Edition 656 – Week Commencing Sunday 17th June 2012

There were seven new entries, two re-entries, five climbers, twenty four songs going down and one non mover.  Cheryl can be delighted with her success as ‘Call My Name’ sold over 150k copies on its way to the top.  Also interesting was Precision Tunes who went straight in at no.9 with their cover of Maroon 5’s track which gets released this week.  Finally its worth mentioning that Tyler James from The Voice made no.39 which is six places higher than the eventual winner Leanne Mitchell!

Australian singer Sam Sparro releases his latest single ‘I Wish I Never Met You’ this week. It is available on download and comes accompanied by a video directed by Mike Rosenthal. His first album was released back in 2008 and featured the single ‘Black & Gold’ which made no.2 in the UK. He won several ARIA awards including Best Male Artist, Breakthrough Artist and Single Of The Year while picking up Best Dance video for ‘Black & Gold’ at the MTV Awards. He also reached the top forty with a later single ‘Pocket’ (#33) but has since been absent from the charts. He now has a new album ‘Return To Paradise’ scheduled for release which has already seen the single ‘Happiness’ reach no.2 in Belgium. It’s hard to say whether this will take off in the same way ‘Black & Gold’ did, and my gut feeling is that it won’t end up reaching the top ten.

American rock band Maroon 5 release their brand new single ‘Payphone’ on the A&M label this week.  It sees them team up with Wiz Khalifa and is the follow up to their Christina Aguilera collaboration ‘Moves Like Jagger’.  That track sold over 1m copies and was the second biggest selling single of 2011 despite never making the top spot. ‘Payphone’ has already been a massive hit around the world topping the charts in Canada and reaching no.2 in both Australia and the US. The digital release features the Thomas Penton and Barry Huffine Remix and the Sound Of Arrows Remix alongside a clean version of the main track. This is the first single to be taken from their forthcoming album ‘Overexposed’ which is due for release later this month. All the indications are that this should be a strong contender for the top spot next weekend.

‘Black Heart’ is the new single by the all female trio StooShe. The band were put together two years ago by writer / manager Jo Perry following a series of auditions and consist of Karis Anderson, Alexandra Buggs and Courtney Rumbold.  The single release comes with a variety of new mixes including the ShowNProve Remix, the Bimbo Jones Radio Edit and the Wookie Radio Edit. These sit alongside the new track ‘Things That Make You Go Mmm’. They released their first single ‘Betty Woz Gone’ last year but it failed to chart. They followed that up with ‘Love Me’ which made the top five and saw them team up with Travie McCoy.  This is now the third single to come from their debut album ‘Swings & Roundabouts’ which is set for release in September this year. This should do well for them although it looks set to face fierce competition at the top end of the charts next Sunday.

This week sees the critically acclaimed duo 2:54 release a 7″ vinyl edition of their single ‘Creeping’. It features ‘The March’ on the flip side and sits alongside the download version which is already available. The track features on the bands self titled album which was released on the Polydor album back in May and is the follow up to their last single ‘You’re Early’. They headlined a show at the London Scala earlier this month and now the band are away playing a series of dates across the pond in the US before returning to Europe later in the year.  In the UK they are scheduled to play the 2000 Trees Festival in Cheltenham, the Beacon Festival in Skipton, the End Of The Road Festival in Dorset and the Isle Of Wight Bestival. Fans and collectors will be keen to snap this release up but I’m not sure it will give them a debut commercial hit.

Sunderland based band Futureheads release their new single ‘Beeswing’, a cover of the Richard Thompson song, this week. It’s taken from their current album ‘Rant’ which stands apart from their earlier material in the respect that it is completely acapella.  It focuses around cover versions of clasic songs including a take on Sparks ‘The No.1 Song In Heaven’ and Kelis’ ‘Acapella’. Their biggest hit was their top ten cover of Kate Bush ‘Hounds Of Love’ although fans may also recall ‘Decent Days And Nights’ which enjoyed two separate runs in the top thirty. They are supporting Red Hot Chilli Peppers next weekend at the Stadium Of Light in their home city and have a one off show scheduled for Shepherds Bush Empire in September.  They will also make festival appearances across the Summer but are unlikely to see this sit inside the higher end of the chart.

‘Do You Chew’ is the new single by electronic duo Chew Lips and is released with new track ‘Eagle’ as the b side.  It’s the band’s first full release since their debut album ‘Unicorn’ in 2010. The album received positive reviews and they continued to build their fanbase by touring with The Killers, Joy Formidable and We Are Scientists. They appeared at the recent Lovebox festival in London before heading off for gigs in Hungary and Norway this week. They are also due to make a short UK tour at the end of the month taking in Bristol, Manchester, Glasgow and London.  Later in the Summer they are due to take in festival appearances at Sheffield’s Tramlines, Leopallooza in Bude and The Magic Loungeabout in Skipton.  It will be interesting to see if this manages to turn their critical acclaim into mainstream commercial success.

‘Keep On Moving On’ is the new single by the former Razorlight drummer Andy Burrows.  It’s the first track to be lifted from his forthcoming studio album which follows up his 2008 release ‘The Colour Of My Dreams’. Since leaving the band back in 2009 he has released music as part of I Am Arrows and Smith & Burrows (which saw him team up with Tom Smith from the band Editors. He also played with Mark Ronson on the Arthur soundtrack, on two The Boy Least Likely To albums and is currently working alongside both Delilah and Melanie C. Last week saw him declare that his work on the new We Are Scientists album was complete, and that it would be released early in 2013. He also plays drums on the current theme tune to the Jonathan Ross television show. It’s hard to see this charting for him, but his album should receive more attention.

‘Our Love’ is the new single by Stereo Palma which sees them team up with Craig David. It is released with a variety of remixes including the Radio Edit, Club Mix, the Mikael Weermets Remix, the B-Sensual vs No End Radio Edit, the B-Sensual vs No End Remix, the Myon & Shane 54 Summer Of Love Radio Edit and the Myon & Shane 54 Summer Of Love Mix. Craig David of course needs no introduction and has had fourteen top forty hits in his own right while also guesting on top twenty singles by Kano and Artful Dodger. Stereo Palma have yet to grace the top forty but could help to perk up Craig David’s career which has hit barren times of late with his most recent album ‘Signed Sealed Delivered’ missing the top ten and providing no hit singles.  Together though they work well and this stands a good chance of reaching next weekends chart.

Finally this week comes ‘Wild Thing’ by thirty eight year old German DJ and producer Tocadisco. His name is Spanish for turntable and his professional career started in 1996 at Dusseldorf’s UNIQUE nightclub. He remixed ‘Lifetimes’ by Slam which was voted one of the best remixes of 2001 by readers of GROOVE magazine. Later in 2007 he remixed some tracks which appeared on Benny Benassi’s compilation album ‘Cooking For Pump-Kin : Special Menu’ while 2008 saw him work with legendary DJ David Guetta. He released his most recent album ‘128.0 FM’ in 2009, the same year which saw him marry Brazillian model Natasha Garcez. This is released as a one track download on the Toca45 Recordings label whereas I expected to see more remixes made available.  Without that I can’t see this charting particularly high on Sunday afternoon.

Cheryl’s new album will see single sales fall so instead expect to see Maroon 5 featuring Wiz Khalifa making their debut in pole position next Sunday. Don’t forget to stop by next week when artists releasing new singles look set to include Bruce Springsteen, Chris Brown, Jason Derulo and R Kelly.  Until then have yourself a good week.
