Chart Chat Edition 669 – W/C 16.09.12

Chart Chat Edition 669 – Week Commencing Sunday 16th September 2012

There were ten new entries, two re-entries, four climbers, twenty two songs going down and two non movers on this weeks chart.  The Script featuring climbed one to no.1 with ‘Hall Of Fame’ but former X Factor contestant Amelia Lily can be very proud of going straight in at no.2 with ‘You Bring Me Joy’.

Ne-Yo fell two to no.3 with ‘Let Me Love You (Until You Learn To Love Yourself)’ while Little Mix held firm for another week at no.4 with ‘Wings’. P!nk fell two to no.5 with ‘Blow Me (One Last Kiss)’ and Flo Rida climbed five to no.6 with ‘I Cry’. Taylor Swift went back up one to no.7 with ‘We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together’ and Owl City & Carly Rae Jepsen fell two to no.8 with ‘Good Time’. Sam & The Womp went down four to no.9 with ‘Bom Bom’ while the top ten was finished off by fun. who were a non mover at no.10 with ‘Some Nights’.

There were a further four new entries and one re-entry in the remainder of the top twenty. Tulisa featuring Tyga went straight in at no.11 with ‘Live It Up’ while Gerry & The Pacemakers re-entered at no.12 with ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ following a campaign after this weeks findings around the Hillsborough disaster. Cheryl climbed two to no.13 with ‘Under The Sun’ and David Guetta featuring Sia went straight in at no.14 with ‘She Wolf (Falling To Pieces)’. Mumford & Sons entered at no.17 with ‘I Will Wait’ while the other new entry came at no.18 and went to The Killers with ‘Runaways’.

There were five new entries and one re-entry in the lower half of the chart. David Guetta got his second new entry of the week at no.22, this time with a little help from Ne-Yo & Akon on ‘Play Hard’. Otto Knows went straight in at no.24 with ‘Million Voices’ and Kanye West featuring Jay-Z & Big Sean got a new entry at no.29 with ‘Clique’.  Coldplay featuring Rihanna re-entered at no.34 with ‘Princess Of China’ and PSY got a new entry at no.37 with ‘Gangnam Style’.  The final new entry of the week went to Conor Maynard featuring Ne-Yo who entered at no.38 with ‘Turn Around’.

‘Say Nothing’ is the first single to be taken from Example’s new album ‘The Evolution Of Man’ which is set for release in November.  The digital release of the single features a variety of mixes including the Radio Edit, the Extended Club Mix, the Hardwell & Dannic Remix, the Foamo Remix, the Roska Remix and the TC Remix. His 2010 album ‘Won’t Go Quietly’ first put him on the map, notching up four top forty hit singles, and reaching the top five on the album chart. Follow up ‘Playing In The Shadows’ took things a step further, topping the charts and yielding four hit singles including ‘Changed The Way You Kiss Me’ and ‘Stay Awake’ which both reached no.1. He has also collaborated successfully on other top forty hits by artists including Wretch 32, Calvin Harris, Flux Pavillion and Tinchy Stryder.  This has to be one of the main contenders for the top spot next Sunday afternoon.

‘Ayla’ is the latest single by The Maccabees and it comes released on 7″ vinyl this week. It’s the fourth single to be taken from their album ‘Given To The Wild’ which has been their biggest release to date, peaking at no.4. The b side features an alternative version of ‘Ayla’ and the sleeve features a picture by acclaimed photographer Andy Goldsworthy. To date they have only reached the top forty on three occasions with their biggest hit being ‘Love You Better’ which peaked at no.36. The band are based in South London and originally came together in 2004 before releasing their debut album ‘Colour It In’ in 2007. The band are currently away in the States playing a series of live dates before returning to Europe towards the end of the year.  With its three predecessors failing to reach the top forty this single release is likely to be for fans and collectors only, and as such I cannot see it charting.

‘Bikes’ is the new EP from up and coming singer / songwriter Lucy Rose. The digital release features two new mixes of the track (the Peace Remix and the Island Of Yap Remix) alongside a live recording of it from a recent appearance at the Heaven nightclub. She is perhaps not known that well in her own right though she did provide vocals on the Bombay Bicycle Club albums ‘Flaws’ and ‘A Different Kind Of Fix’. She has been working on recording her debut album ‘Like I Used To’ with producer Charlie Hugall at her parents house in Warwickshire and it is due for release on the Sony Music Entertainment label next week. She has played the Latitude, Green Man and Bestival Festivals this Summer and was identfied by Clash magazine as being one of the artists to watch this year.  I think fans curiosity may be higher for her album and so the single may be expected to fall by the wayside a little.

‘Get It Started’ is the new single by Cuban rapper Pitbull and it follows up his Men In Black III Soundtrack release ‘Back In Time’.  The Play-n-Skillz Remix of that track features as the bonus track on the digital format of this single along with the main mix of ‘Get It Started’. The track sees him team up with Colombian legend Shakira who he co-wrote the tracks ‘Loca’ and ‘Rabiosa’ on her ‘Sale el Sol’ album. Pitbull has scored eight top forty hits in his UK career including ‘Give Me Everything’ which saw him top the charts with a little help from Ne-Yo, Afrojack and Nayer. He is in high demand to appear on other peoples singles and has guested on top forty hits by Livvi Franc, Alexandra Burke, Enrique Iglesias, Jennifer Lopez, Usher and Timbaland. This will undoubtedly be a popular track picking up plenty of airplay and as such it stands a good chance of appearing somewhere inside the top ten next Sunday afternoon.

English folk / soul singer Lianne La Havas releases her new single ‘Forget’ this week. It’s the fifth track to be taken from her album ‘Is Your Love Big Enough?’ which reached no.4 on its release earlier this year. She was nominated in the BBC Sound Of 2012 but failed to make the top five, missing out to eventual winner Michael Kiwanuka and runners up Azealia Banks, Frank Ocean, Skrillex and Niki & The Dove.  She was born to a Greek father and Jamaican mother but was raised in Tooting and Streatham.  She attended sixth form college in Croydon where she met singer / songwriter Allan Rose who in turn introduced her to several key contacts.  She toured with Paloma Faith and signed to Warner Brothers in 2010 though she chose to fine tune her material for almost two years before releasing anything to the mainstream.  She can be proud of her top five album but I can’t see this being her first hit single.

British singer / songwriter Delilah releases her brand new single ‘Shades Of Grey’ this week. The digital format contains four new mixes; the MJ Cole Remix, the MJ Cole Dub, the SpectraSoul Remix and the SpectraSoul Remix Instrumental.  It’s the fifth single to be taken from her debut album ‘From The Roots Up’ which reached the top five upon its release earlier this year. So far only her debut single ‘Go’ has seen her inside the top forty although she did feature on the Chase & Status hit ‘Time’ which made no.21. She further broadened her fanbase earlier this year when she was the opening act on Prince’s Australian tour earlier this year. Her influences include Portishead, Ella Fitzgerald, Chaka Khan, Sade and Aaliyah. Given her relatively poor performance on the singles chart its hard to see this selling enough copies to make next weekends top forty.

‘The Walls Of The World’ is the latest single by singer / songwriter Katie Melua.  Across her career so far she has notched up seven top forty singles including her posthumous duet with Eva Cassidy on ‘What A Wonderful World’ which topped the chart.  Her last appearance in the top forty came two years ago when ‘The Flood’ peaked at no.35. She has achieved much greater success on the album chart with her debut album ‘Call Off The Search’ being certified six times platinum in the UK.  Despite that album being released nine years ago she is now still only 27 years old. Each of her five studio albums have made the top ten including ‘Secret Symphony’ which features this single and was released earlier this year. Neither of the previous singles from ‘Secret Symphony’ have come close to reaching the top forty, or even the top 100, and as such it’s hard to see this one really taking off.

‘Good Intentions’ is the new single by former N-Dubz frontman Dappy. The digital release comes with three new mixes; the Major Look Remix, the Major Look Dub Mix and the Zone 10 Remix.  His debut single ‘No Regrets’ went straight to the top of the charts while his Brian May collaboration ‘Rockstar’ peaked at no.2. A promotional single entitled ‘I’m Coming (Tarzan Part 2)’ was also released but only reached no.35. All of those tracks will feature on his debut album ‘Bad Intentions’ which is set for release in mid October. He is currently already inside the top forty through his appearance on the latest Cover Drive single ‘Explode’.  With his former band mates also enjoying top twenty singles over the past month he will be even more keen to see this perform well.  Despite their solo projects the trio plan to reform N-Dubz to record new material sometime during 2013.  For now this should at least make the top twenty.

Finally this week comes another singer / songwriter in the shape of 19 year old Lauren Wright. She releases her debut single ‘Kiss Me’ this week which was produced in Nashville by Derek Garten who has previously worked with country singer Taylor Swift. The video to the track was directed by Steve Graham whose clients have included the Eurythmics and Lenny Kravitz. The single also features the Club Mix of the track and bonus track ‘Spark’. She was a finalist in the 2012 Rock The House competition which was held in the House Of Lords back in June and has also supported Britney Spears, The Saturdays and JLS at the LG Arena in Birmingham.  She is currently touring high schools in the US but is set to head to the UK for a series of appearances in promotion of this single. It’s very radio friendly and as such should pick up plenty of airplay.  Watch out for it inside next weekends chart.

Also released this week are ‘Treading Water’ by Alex Clare, ‘Stingin’ Belle’ by Biffy Clyro, ‘Lies’ by Burns, ‘You’re The One’ by Charli XCX, ‘So Wonderful’ by Emilia Mitiku, ‘For My Sins’ by Jess Mills, ‘Two Way Street’ by Kimbra, ‘Back To You’ by Russ Chimes and ‘The Clock’ by The View.

I think it will be a shoot out at the top between The Script featuring and Example but I think the latter will win out. Don’t forget to stop by next week when artists releasing new singles look set to include Joss Stone, Kylie Minogue, No Doubt and Nelly Furtado.  Until then have yourself a good week.
