Chart Chat Edition 671 – W/C 30.09.12

Chart Chat Edition 671 – Week Commencing Sunday 30th September 2012

There were three new entries, four re-entries, thirteen climbers, twenty songs going down and no non movers on this weeks chart.  Psy finally took ‘Gangnam Style’ to the top of the chart though sales of 84k are perhaps not as impressive as they might be.  That said he still finished 26k ahead of The Script featuring will.i.am who dropped a place to no.2 with ‘Hall Of Fame’.

Flo Rida went up six places to no.3 with ‘I Cry’ and Taylor Swift climbed two to no.4 with ‘We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together’. Ne-Yo dropped one to no.5 with ‘Let Me Love You (Until You Learn To Love Yourself)’ and Example fell four to no.6 with ‘Say Nothing’. fun. climbed back up seven to no.7 with ‘Some Nights’ and David Guetta featuring Sia went up three to no.8 with ‘She Wolf (Falling To Pieces)’. Conor Maynard featuring Ne-Yo climbed nine to no.9 with ‘Turn Around’ and the top ten was rounded off by Amelia Lily who went down two to no.10 with ‘You Bring Me Joy’.

Two climbers and two new entries were to be found in what remained in the top twenty. Mumford & Sons went up four to no.12 with ‘I Will Wait’ and DJ Fresh featuring RaVaughn got a new entry at no.13 with ‘The Feeling’. Paloma Faith went straight in at no.16 with ‘Never Tear Us Apart’ and Otto Knows climbed three to no.18 with ‘Million Voices’.

There were one new entry, four re-entries and five climbers in the lower half of the chart. Florence & The Machine went back up three to no.22 with ‘Spectrum (Say My Name)’ and Jason Mraz re-entered at no.23 with ‘I Won’t Give Up’. Maroon 5 featuring Wiz Khalifa climbed back up four to no.25 with ‘Payphone’ and The Fray re-entered at no.27.  Muse re-entered at no.28 with ‘Madness’ and Professor Green featuring Sierra Kusterbeck went up nine to no.29 with ‘Avalon’. Taylor Swift went straight in at no.30 with ‘Begin Again’ and StooShe went back up one to no.31 with ‘Black Heart’. Rudimental featuring John Newman climbed back up one to no.34 with ‘Feel The Love’ and fun. featuring Janelle Monae re-entered at no.35 with ‘We Are Young’.

‘Live While We’re Young’ is the new single by the biggest boy band around at the minute One Direction. Despite finishing third on X Factor the band have gone on to be a big success Stateside topping the album charts (a feat they could not achieve in the UK) and selling over a million copies of their debut album ‘Up All Night’.  Their debut single ‘What Makes You Beautiful’ made no.1 while subsequent singles ‘Gotta Be You’ and ‘One Thing’ both made the top ten.  They have been busy working on their second album ‘Take Me Home’ which is due for release in mid November, and this is the first track to be lifted from it. The track was written and produced by the trio of Savan Kotecha, Rami Yacoub and Carl Falk who were behind the bands earlier hits.  This certainly stands a very good chance of going straight in at the top next Sunday afternoon.

Barbadian based superstar Rihanna has already notched up twenty six top forty hits as a solo artist including five number ones.  She has also guested on eight top forty hits by other artists including Jay-Z’s no.1 hit ‘Run This Town’. It’s been less than a year since her last album ‘Talk That Talk’ but this week already sees her back with new single ‘Diamonds’ and it looks like putting in a serious challenge to the One Direction boy’s assault on the top spot. The track was written by Stargate, Sia Furler and Benjamin Levin and will feature on her forthcoming seventh studio album. It has been only a few days since it gained its first radio play so it is hoping that fans pick up on its release very quickly. It’s hard to believe that she is still only twenty four and so should still have many years of chart domination still ahead of her.

‘A Case For Vinyl’ is the new single by The Charlatans frontman Tim Burgess.  It comes released on a clear vinyl 7″ featuring the Walls Remix on the flip side.  It’s hard to believe he is now 45 years old, and is currently sporting a striking blonde haircut! His very first solo album ‘I Believe’ appeared back in 2003 and peaked at no.38. Now this week sees the follow up ‘Oh No I Love You’ being released to coincide with the release of the album. The album centres around Tim’s songwriting experience with Lambchop frontman Kurt Wagner. He is also scheduled to perform five dates across the UK in October with venues set to include Norwich, York, Aberdeen, Glasgow and Manchester.  Given that its release date coincides with the album I would expect only the real die hard fans and collectors will choose to purchase this as a single.

It’s been a full twenty two years since PiL last graced the top forty with ‘Don’t Ask Me’.  Their biggest hit remains ‘This Is Not A Love Song’, a track which peaked at no.5 in 1983 they chose to open the setlist of their recent UK tour. The band were formed by John Lydon following the demise of the Sex Pistols and their ‘Metal Box’ album in particular was viewed as groundbreaking following its release back in 1979. The band went on an extended hiatus in 1992 before returning to the fray with a series of live appearances in 2009. Their new album ‘This Is PiL’ was released earlier this year and saw them back in the top forty while now this week sees ‘Reggie Song’ released on 12″ vinyl and CD single. The 12″ format contains live versions of ‘Four Enclosed Walls’ and ‘Disappointed’ while the CD / Download also features ‘USLS1’, ‘Warrior’ and ‘Psychopath’.

‘Anything Could Happen’ is the new single by twenty five year old British singer / songwriter Ellie Goulding. It was written by Goulding and she also co-produced the track with Jim Eliot. The digital release features the Birdy Nam Nam Mix along with the Submerse Remix and new track ‘Hanging On’. She first enjoyed success with her single ‘Starry Eyed’ which peaked at no.4 though her biggest hit remains her cover of Elton John’s ‘Your Song’ which made no.2. Her debut album ‘Lights’ topped the charts and this is the first track to be lifted from the follow up ‘Halcyon’ which is released next week on the Polydor label. She won the Critics Choice awards at the BRITS in 2010 and also topped the BBC Sound Of 2010 poll.  I have high hopes that the album will go on to top the charts but I’m not sure if the single has what it takes to challenge for the top ten.

Mika returns this week with a little help from Pharrell Williams on his brand new single ‘Celebrate’. He has enjoyed six top forty hits to date including most notably ‘Grace Kelly’ which went all the way to the top of the charts. In addition he has notched up two top five albums and is set to release his new album ‘The Origins Of Love’ next week. The album has already reached no.1 in France where ‘Elle Me Dit’ was the first single which also reached the top spot.  That track has been rerecorded as ‘Emily’ for the UK release of the album while ‘Elle Me Dit’ features as a bonus track on the French edition. It has been three years now since his last top forty appearance with ‘We Are Golden’ so he is well overdue another hit. Fortunately this is the kind of happy uptempo song which he does best so I think we can expect to see this somewhere inside the top twenty next weekend.

‘Seek It’ is the new single by former Longpigs and Pulp member Richard Hawley.  The digital format of the single features the bonus track ‘Big Sister’ and is taken from his current album ‘Standing At The Sky’s Edge’ which reached the top three upon its release earlier this year. He had released six previous solo albums but none of those had acheived quite the same success. To date his only top forty hit came with ‘Tonight The Streets Are Ours’ which peaked at no.40 back in 2007. He regularly appears as a session musician and he played the guitar on All Saints cover of ‘Under The Bridge’. He also provided vocals on ‘Bad Woman’, the b side to Arctic Monkeys ‘Teddy Picker’.  Given his relative lack of success on the singles chart it would appear unlikely that this will appear inside the top forty but then again much stranger things have happened.

‘Allo Darlin’ release their new single ‘Northern Lights’ which features ‘Golden Age’ as the bonus track. It follows up their single ‘Europe’ which was also the title track to their second studio album which was released earlier this year. They are a four piece band who started out as a vehicle for the talents of Australian Elizabeth Morris. She worked on a project under that name from late 2007 and subsequently released the EP ‘Merry Christmas From Allo Darlin” in 2008.  However it wasn’t until 2009 that the other band members joined the line up. The band completed their UK tour last month and will head out to Australia for a series of gigs before returning to Europe again in November. Given that the original versions of both tracks feature on the ‘Europe’ album this is likely to appeal to fans and collectors only so they will have to wait a little longer before they can put a challenge in on the top forty.

American rapper Kendrick Lamar releases his latest single ‘Swimming Pools (Drank)’ this week. It is released digitally featuring both a clean and explicit version of the track and is produced by T-Minus. His first major label album ‘good city, m.A.A.d city’ is due for release later this month and he has also rumoured to be collaborating with Lady Gaga on a new track entitled ‘Partynauseous’.  Other guest stars on the album look set to include Drake and Mary J Blige. Lamar claims it is a big move on from his 2011 debut album ‘Section, 80’ which was released last year. His last single was ‘The Recipe’ which saw him team up with the legendary Dr Dre.  Comparisons have been drawn between him and 2Pac who he lists as one of his musical influences. This is a great single which will surely chart if it can pick up enough mainstream airplay.

Also released this week are ‘Something Good’ by Alt-J, ‘Passenger’ by Lisa Hannigan, ‘Loving The Sound’ by The Overtones, ‘Never Is A Long Time / Love Of Your Life’ by Red Hot Chilli Peppers and ‘Anna Sun’ by Walk The Moon.

It looks like being a straight shoot out between Rihanna and One Direction at the top of the charts but my money is on Rihanna to triumph. Don’t forget to stop by next week when artists releasing new singles look set to include Keane, Lemar, Nas featuring Amy Winehouse and Nicki Minaj.  Until then have yourself a good week.
