Chart Chat Edition 672 – W/C 07.10.12

Chart Chat Edition 672 – Week Commencing Sunday 7th October 2012

There were eight new entries, six climbers, twenty three songs going down and three non movers on this weeks chart. It was all change at the top with four new entries in the top five one of which was Rihanna who went straight in at no.1 with ‘Diamonds’.  That meant that the Korean sensation Psy had to settle for the runners up spot with his single ‘Gangnam Style’ giving up the top spot after just one week.

One Direction could only enter at no.3 with ‘Live While We’re Young’ and Adele got a new entry at no.4 with ‘Skyfall’ which is still impressive considering the track was only released on Friday to coincide with James Bond’s 50th anniversary. Ellie Goulding went straight in at no.5 with ‘Anything Could Happen’ while The Script featuring fell four to no.6 with ‘Hall Of Fame’. Flo Rida fell four to no.7 with ‘I Cry’ and David Guetta featuring Sia got a non mover at no.8 with ‘She Wolf (Falling To Pieces)’. Conor Maynard featuring Ne-Yo were a non mover at no.9 with ‘Turn Around’ and Taylor Swift rounded off the top ten with ‘We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together’ which fell six places to no.10.

A further one new entry and three climbers were to be found in the remainder of the top twenty. Jason Mraz climbed twelve to no.11 with ‘I Won’t Give Up’ and Otto Knows went up three to no.15 with ‘Million Voices’. Emeli Sande climbed back up two to no.17 with ‘Read All About It Part III’ and the only new entry went to Nicki Minaj at no.20 with ‘Va Va Voom’.

There were three new entries and three climbers in the lower half of the chart. Muse went up three to no.25 with ‘Madness’ while Taylor Swift got a new entry at no.26 with ‘Red’.  Kanye West featuring Big Sean & Jay-Z climbed eight to no.30 with ‘Clique’ and The Other Tribe went straight in at no.36 with ‘Skirts’.  Adele’s cover of ‘I Can’t Make You Love Me’ entered at no.37 while Carly Rae Jepsen rounded off proceedings going back up two places to no.38 with ‘Call Me Maybe’.

Alexandra Stan dominated charts across Europe with her 2010 single ‘Mr Saxobeat’. It topped the charts in Austria, Germany, Italy and Switzerland while making the top three in the Finland, Spain and the UK. The follow up ‘Get Back (ASAP)’ did achieve some minor success but in the eyes of many people she is a one hit wonder. That said her looks left her in demand for modelling workand she appeared on the cover of FHM. Now she is back with a second album (imaginitively entitled ‘Saxobeats II’) and from that comes her new reggae / Europop fusion single ‘Lemonade’. The digital format comes with a number of remixes including the UK Radio Edit, the Cahill Radio Edit, the Cahill Club Mix and the Rudedog Radio Edit. The video has received over 7m views and has started to become a hit in Eastern Europe but whether that can translate into success in the UK remains to be seen.

‘Turn Around’ is the new single by twenty year old singer Conor Maynard which features rapper Ne-Yo. It has already made the top ten but this week receives its official release.  The digital format of the single contains a series of brand new remixes including the DADA Edit, the Dave Aude Radio Mix, the Marc MacRowland Remix, the Arcade Remix all of which sit alongside a cover of the Nicki Minaj song ‘Starships’ which was recorded live at the BBC. It has already been a great year for Conor in 2012 with his debut album ‘Contrast’ going all the way to the top of the charts and the singles ‘Vegas Girl’ and ‘Can’t Say No’ reaching the top five. He won the MTV Brand New For 2012 award and has really gone from strength to strength.  As the single has already become a sizeable hit I’m not sure how much further up the charts these remixes can push it.

Leona Lewis returns this week with a little help from Childish Gambino on her new single ‘Trouble’.  To date she has notched up nine top forty hits including three number ones.  Her debut album ‘Spirit’ sold over 9m copies worldwide and although the follow up ‘Echo’ also topped the charts it sold just 2.6m copies. Next week sees the release of her third album ‘Glassheart’ which also features her top five single ‘Collide’ which saw her team up with Avicii. The music video stars Teen Wolf actor Colton Haynes who was chosen to appear due to his resemblence to the songs subject Leona’s childhood sweetheart Lou Al-Chamaa. The digital release of the track also features an acoustic version, the Wookie Remix and the Wideboys Radio Mix.  Her last hit came with the ‘Hurt EP’ which contained a series of covers and peaked at no.8 but disappeared soon after.

French Electro House / Pop producer Madeon returns this week with his new single ‘The City’. Aged just 18, he first charted earlier this year with ‘Icarus’ and also saw the follow up ‘The Finale’ reach the top thirty. This single contains the Extended Mix of the main track alongside the Netsky Remix of ‘Finale’ and both the Live Version and the Fred V & Graffix Remix of ‘Icarus’. He supported Swedish House Mafia at their Milton Keynes Bowl concert earlier this year and have performed remix work for numerous artists including Blur, Killers, Pendulum and Alphabeat. He has featured several times on Pete Tong’s 15 Minutes Of Fame feature and also played a twenty minute set at a Radio 1 gala event in Hull back in January. I expect this to become his third hit although I’m not quite sure that it will do enough to become the first to crack the top twenty.

‘Don’t You Worry Child’ by dance collective Swedish House Mafia and it sees them team up once more with  John Martin.  He has previously worked with the band on ‘Save The Earth’ and returns to assist them once more. It is their sixth single release, with four of the previous five making the top ten. ‘One’ and ‘Antidote’ (with Knife Party) hold the record of being the highest charting singles to date, both peaking at no.4. The band consists of Axwell, Steve Angello and Sebastian Ingrosso and are currently on a farewell tour which is now extended into 2013. The digital release of the single contains the Radio Edit, an Acoustic Version and the Zedd Remix of ‘Save The World’. The track features on their second album ‘Until Now’ which is set for release in a weeks time.  I’m sure this will perform well for them and I fully expect to see this inside the top ten next Sunday afternoon.

‘Dodecahedron’ is the latest single from Newcastle based folk act Beth Jeans Houghton & The Hooves Of Destiny which comes released on 7″ vinyl this week.  It is backed with the Mr Blazey mix of ‘Carousel’ and is released on the Mute label.  Both tracks feature on their debut album ‘Yours Truly, Cellophane Nose’ which was produced by Ben Hiller who has previously worked with the likes of Blur, Elbow and Depeche Mode. It has received considerable critical acclaim and peaked at no.83 upon its release back in February. Beth has also been in the press for dating Red Hot Chilli Peppers frontman Anthony Kiedis while comparisons have been drawn between her musical style and that of Laura Marling.  Given that none of her previous singles have come close to gracing the top forty it is hard to see this reversing that trend.

Dog Is Dead release their new single ‘Talk Through The Night’ this week.  The digital release features both the Mystery Jets Disco Biscuit Remix and the Unicorn Kid 98 Mix. The track features on their debut album ‘All Our Favourite Stories’ which is also released this week. The band are to undertake an extensive UK tour starting in October and concluding at the Scala venue in London in early November. They first formed back in 2008 and hail from West Bridgford in Nottingham. Fans who sign up to their mailing list can receive a free download of their The Talent Show EP while their website also offers the chance to purchase limited edition t shirts.  They have been slowly and consistently building their fanbase and expect the album to chart relatively well.  The single however will be more restricted to fans and collectors so is unlikely to chart with any significance.

‘Given Up Giving Up’ is the third EP release from Welsh duo Lilygreen & Maguire.  It features four tracks with ‘I Won’t Let It Happen’, ‘All I Care About Is You’ and ‘Call My Name’ sitting alongside the main track. In terms of their musical history Jon Lilygreen’s main claim to fame was being the Cypriot entry into the Eurovision Song Contest in 2010 while Jon Maguire was a member of the punk band The Story So Far. Both were also members of the band Editions. The duo have supported high profile names such as Westlife and Olly Murs on their arena tours and also undertook a busking tour of their native Wales.  A debut album is expected soon and they have been busily writing songs with various people including Ricky Ross from Deacon Blue and Gregg Alexander. While their fan base is still growing I don’t expect this to sell in the quantities required to make the top forty.

With the current series of X Factor now finally in full swing with the weekly live shows its the time when former contestants try and cash in while they can gain some extra publicity. This week its the turn of Kitty Brucknell who appears alongside Tiltin on the brand new Loverush UK! single ‘I Wanna Get Out’. The digital release features five different mixes of the track; the Loverush UK Radio Edit, the Loverush UK Club Mix, the DJ Sted-E & Hybrid Heights Remix, the Ofit Remix and the Maurizo Gubellini Club Remix. Loverush UK! have previously worked with a number of other well known artists including Marc Almond, Marcella Detroit, Boy George and Andrea Britton. On balance I don’t think this will be able to make the crossover from the clubs to the mainstream charts and so I don’t really expect to see this inside the top forty next weekend.

Also released this week are ‘Your Drums, Your Love’ by Aluna George, ‘Out Of My Mind’ by B.o.B featuring Nicki Minaj, ‘Little Black Submarines’ by Black Keys, ‘Disconnected’ by Keane, ‘Lost In The Echo’ by Linkin Park and ‘The Love Is Gone’ by Shy & DRS featuring Sandi Thom.

The smart money has to be on Adele to climb to no.1 with ‘Skyfall’ though Psy continues to sell well with ‘Gangnam Style’. Don’t forget to stop by next week when artists releasing new singles look set to include Calvin Harris featuring Florence Welch, Lawson, Marina & The Diamonds and Pet Shop Boys.  Until then have yourself a good week.
