Chart Chat Edition 674 – W/C 21.10.12

Chart Chat Edition 674 – Week Commencing Sunday 21st October 2012

There were eight new entries, one re-entry, five climbers, twenty four songs going down and two non movers on this weeks chart.  The combination of Calvin Harris and Florence Welch once again worked well as their single ‘Sweet Nothing’ went straight in at no.1 while Swedish House Mafia featuring John Martin fell one place to no.2 with ‘Don’t You Worry Child’.

Psy was a non mover at no.3 with ‘Gangnam Style’ and Rihanna also stayed the same at no.4 with ‘Diamonds’. Adele may have been celebrating the birth of her baby boy this weekend but her ‘Skyfall’ single dropped three to no.5 but Lawson got a new entry at no.6 with ‘Standing In The Dark’. Taylor Swift went back up five to no.7 with ‘We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together’ and Maroon 5 climbed ten to no.8 with ‘One More Night’. Conor Maynard featuring Ne-Yo fell one to no.9 with ‘Turn Around’ and the top ten was concluded by Flo Rida who went down one to no.10 with ‘I Cry’.

There were a further two new entries and one climber in what remained of the top twenty.  Rebecca Ferguson went straight in at no.15 with ‘Backtrack’ and ‘Latch’ by Disclosure featuring Sam Smith went up nine to no.17.  The other new entry went to Justin Bieber featuring Nicki Minaj with the awfully titled ‘Beauty And A Beat’ which went straight in at no.20.

There were four new entries, one re-entry and two climbers in the lower half of the chart. Paloma Faith went back up three to no.24 with ‘Never Tear Us Apart’ while Kanye West featuring Big Sean & Jay-Z climbed three to no.25 with ‘Clique’. Tyler James featuring Dot Rotten went straight in at no.28 with ‘Single Tear’ and Jake Bugg got a new entry at no.33 with ‘Two Fingers’. Taylor Swift went straight in at no.36 with ‘State Of Grace’ and Everything Everything scored a new entry at no.37 with ‘Cough Cough’. Finally John Denver re-entered at no.38 with ‘Annie Song’ following its recent use in a television advertisement.

‘Flaws’ is the new single by Bastille.  It was originally released last year on 7″ vinyl with ‘Icarus’ on the flip side and featured in the soundtrack to the Channel 4 series ‘Made In Chelsea’. They are a four piece who hail from South London and whose biggest hit to date was ‘Bad Blood’, peaking at no.90. They played at this years Leeds / Reading festival and have just completed a UK tour where they were supported by Swiss Lips. Fans who purchase the digital EP will receive new track ‘Durban Skies’ alongside the Cinematics In My Soul Remix of the main track.  There is also a version recorded live at The Scala and the accompanying video to the track. They also recently released a four track EP of their appearance at this years iTunes festival which included live versions of ‘Icarus’ and ‘Bad Blood’. This could give them a debut top 75 appearance but may fall short of the top forty.

‘Long Night Of Life’ sees producer and musician Dan Le Sac team up with Merz. It’s taken from Dan’s first commercially released album (the first two were limited to pressings of 50 and 100 respectively) ‘Space Between The Words’. The digital release sees the new track ‘Eerie’ feature alongside three new mixes; the Merz Remix, the Losers Remix and the Sunday Best Remix.  He has achieved his biggest success when he has teamed up with rapper Scroobius Pip. As a duo they scored a top forty hit with ‘Thou Shalt Not Kill’ while their album ‘Angles’ peaked at no.31. Since going their separate ways Scroobius Pip has secured a top forty place with his ‘Distraction Pieces’ album while Dan has achieved less commercial success. This follows up previous single ‘Memorial’ but as with its predecessor I forsee it falling short of a place inside the chart next Sunday afternoon.

Boy band JLS are back in action this week with their brand new single ‘Hottest Girl In The World’.  Few could have predicted just how big a group they would become when they finished as runner up to Alexandra Burke on the X Factor TV show back in 2008.  Since then they have had ten top forty hits of which five have gone all the way to the top spot.  They are due to release their fourth studio album in November and it will aim to keep up their record of seeing each of their long players land in the top two. The digital format of this release contains three new mixes of the main track; the Andi Durrant & Steve More Radio Edit, the Bless Beats Remix featuring Dominique Young Unique and the DJ Fricktion Remix, It is probably the strongest release this week and should debut inside the top ten, though whether it can put in a serious challenge to the no.1 spot remains to be seen.

Naughty Boy originally featured last year on Emeli Sande’s no.21 hit ‘Daddy’ and now she is back to return the favour on his brand new single ‘Wonder’ which is released this week. The digital release of the single comes with three new mixes; the Kidnap Kid Remix, the Mojam Remix and the Mojam Dub. His career actually began as long ago as 2006 when he was chosen to receive an award by the Princes Trust, and he also won £44,000 on the Noel Edmonds game show Deal Or No Deal.  He wrote the track ‘Diamond Rings’ which was a hit for Chipmunk and secured a three year writing deal with Sony and a one album record deal with Virgin. He has also co-produced the Cheryl Cole track ‘Craziest Things’ which appeared on her recent album ‘A Million Lights’. Whether it be as a writer, producer or performer he certainly looks destined for big things over the forthcoming year.

‘Night Light’ is the new single by 28 year old singer / songwriter Jessie Ware. She has yet to achieve any major success on the singles chart with ‘110%’ peaking at no.61 and the follow up ‘Wildest Moments’ reaching no.46. They had followed on from ‘Strangest Feeling’ and ‘Running’ which both missed out on the top 100. All oft those tracks featured on her debut album ‘Devotion’ which made the top five upon its release earlier this year. It has also received a nomination for this years Mercury Music Prize. In their review of the album Clash magazine called her the missing link between Adele, SBTRKT and Sade. The digital release of the  ‘Night Light’ single features three brand new mixes; the Joe Goddard Remix, the Wild Beasts Remix and the Perseus Remix. Her popularity has certainly grown over recent months and so it is possible that this could secure her a debut top forty hit.

London based rapper Maxsta releases his new single ‘Pop Off’ this week and it sees him team up with Takura. He is signed to Just Jam, a subsidiary of Sony Entertainment, and is set to release his debut album in February 2013. He featured in the 2011 Google Chrome advertisement and was also involved in the Adidas ‘We Are London’ advertising campaign. He released his debut single ‘I Wanna Rock’ back in August of this year and it went on to peak at no.67. It became Nick Grimshaw’s Record Of The Week and remixes included vocals by Rizzle Kicks, Tinchy Stryder and MC Lady Leshurr. He first released his mixtape ‘The Maxtape’ back in 2010 with his track ‘East London Is Back’ going on to feature in numerous Grime compilations. If it picks up enough airplay this could well go on to give him his first ever top forty appearance next Sunday.

Weybridge based five piece You Me At Six return to the fray this week with their new single ‘Reckless’. This is the third single to be taken from their current ‘Sinners Never Sleep’ album which has become their biggest release to date, reaching the top three last year. Across their career they have notched up four top forty hit singles, starting with ‘Finders Keepers’ in 2009. Their biggest hit however remains ‘Rescue Me’ which featured Chiddy and peaked at no.21. The band continue to see their fanbase grow and in reflection of this they are set to play their biggest gig to date in December when they headline at Wembley Arena with the gig being recorded for a CD / DVD release. The last single to be taken from the album was ‘No One Does It Better’ but given that only made no.92 unfortunately it’s hard to see ‘Reckless’ reaching the top forty.

Steps are back this week with ‘Light Up The World’, their first single since ‘Words Are Not Enough / I Know Him So Well’ made no.5 back in 2001.  Their recent reunion saw them secure a no.1 album with ‘The Ultimate Collection’ along with a sellout reunion tour.  The single is also the title track to their new album which is aimed at the Christmas market and contains new versions of some festive classics.  Aside from their debut single ‘5,6,7,8’ the remainder of their fourteen singles all made the top ten with the double a sided ‘Heartbeat / Tragedy’ and ‘Stomp’ both going on to top the charts. In celebration of their new DVD the band are attempting to break the World Record for most people dancing to their version of ‘Tragedy’ – they are hoping to get more than 180,000 people involved! They have a lot to live up to with this single so it will be very interesting to see just how well this does.

‘All I Know’ is the new single by the critically acclaimed electropop group Fenech-Soler. The band are a four piece hailing from Kings Cliffe in Northamptonshire who released their self titled debut album back in 2010.  Their name comes from Daniel Soler’s full surname which is Maltese. Four singles were released from the album but their progress was stalled when band member Ben Duffy was diagnosed with testicular cancer. They donated proceeds from their single ‘Stop & Stare’ (which was Greg James Record Of The Week and Weekend Anthem on its release) to the Teenage Cancer Trust. They have also worked as producers and have provided remixes for the likes of Marina & The Diamonds, Sunday Girl, Example and Everything Everything. They have been working on the follow up album and this is the first release from it. They have yet to come close to the top forty but this could give them a fresh start.

Also released this week are ‘On And On’ by Fossil Collective, ‘She Don’t Dance (With The Sun No More)’ by Fridge Magnets, ‘So High’ by Jay Sean, ‘Won’t You Be There’ by Nero, ‘Solid Ground (Too Much Living For)’ by Pnau, ‘Superman’ by Rick Astley and ‘The Waves’ by Villagers.

It’s a tough call at the top of the chart next weekend as JLS look set to be the highest new entry, but sales of Swedish House Mafia are strong enough to possibly secure them a return to the top. Calvin Harris featuring Florence Welch will be keen to hold on at the top while Labrinth also looks set for a big new entry. Don’t forget to stop by next week when artists releasing new singles look set to include Maroon 5, Matt Cardle, Robbie Williams and The Stranglers.  Until then have yourself a good week.
