Chart Chat Edition 689 – W/C 03.02.13

Chart Chat Edition 689 – Week Commencing Sunday 3rd February 2013

There were three new entries, one re-entry, eight climbers, twenty four songs going down and four non movers on this weeks chart. The Bingo Players featuring Far East Movement held firm for a second week at the top with ‘Get Up (Rattle)’ while Macklemore & Ryan Lewis featuring Wanz were the weeks biggest climber going up twenty two places to no.2 with ‘Thrift Shop’. They will fancy their chances of taking over the top spot next weekend.

Will.i.am featuring Britney Spears fell one to no.3 with ‘Scream & Shout’ while Taylor Swift also went down a place to no.4 with ‘I Knew You Were Trouble’. Rihanna featuring Mikky Ekko fell one to no.5 with ‘Stay’ and Calvin Harris featuring Tinie Tempah also went down a place to no.6 with ‘Drinking From The Bottle’. Conor Maynard featuring Wiley fell one to no.7 with ‘Animal’ but Emeli Sande was a non mover at no.8 with ‘Clown’. 50 Cent featuring Eminem & Adam Levine fell two to no.9 with ‘My Life’ and the top ten was concluded by Devlin featuring Diane Birch whose single ‘Rewind’ went straight in at no.10.

Three climbers were to be found in what remained of the top twenty. Dizzee Rascal climbed eleven places to no.14 with ‘Bassline Junkie’ and Flo Rida went up six places to no.17 with ‘Let It Roll’. The other climber was Rita Ora who went up fourteen places to no.18 with ‘Radioactive’.

There were two new entries, one re-entry and four climbers in the lower half of the chart.  Ellie Goulding climbed twelve places to no.21 with ‘Explosions’ while Magnetic & Futurebound featuring Baby Blue went up two to no.24 with ‘Magnetic Eyes’. Disclosure featuring AlunaGeorge went straight in at no.28 with ‘White Noise’ and the other new entry came at no.29 and went to Droideka with ‘Get Hyper’. Little Mix climbed five to no.31 with ‘Change Your Life’ and Justin Bieber featuring Nicki Minaj re-entered at no.33 with ‘Beauty And A Beat’.  The final climber was Alicia Keys who went back up one to no.34 with ‘Girl On Fire’.

Booty Luv are a duo consisting of singers Cherise and Nadia who originally formed part of the band Big Brovaz. They left to form a duo and quickly hit the big time with ‘Boogie 2nite’ which narrowly missed out on the top spot.  Another top ten hit was achieved with ‘Shine’ while a further three singles went on to reach the top twenty. They haven’t released any material since 2009 but are finally back in action this week with their brand new single ‘Black Widow’. The digital format of the single contains three new mixes of the track; the Honey Ryder Extended Mix, the Latro Dubstep Mix and the Sticky / DeeyanGee Mix.  It’s great to have them back making music and hopefully this will go down well in the clubs as well as the mainstream chart. I bought their debut album ‘Boogie 2nite’ which reached no.11 and hopefully they will be able to put out a second long player in the near future.

‘Clown’ is the latest single (and the fifth in total) to be taken from the award winning Emeli Sande’s album ‘Our Version Of Events’.  The album has remained in the top ten ever since its release last February and is fast narrowing on The Beatles record for most consecutive weeks on the top ten. The Beatles ‘Please Please Me’ holds the record with 62 weeks while Emeli is now on 50 weeks. Given such successful album sales it is a surprise that this single is already doing well on download sales, and its official release as a single can only serve to push it higher up the charts. The digital format contains the video to the track, an instrumental version and a live version recorded at the Royal Albert Hall alongside new track ‘Kill The Boy’. She can usually rely on some TV and radio exposure to back her releases up and so this could well find itself climbing again next weekend.

Lawson’s new single ‘Learn To Love Again’ is another single to have charted ahead of its official single release. The digital release contains an acoustic version of the main track and ‘Waterfall’ along with new track ‘Hurts Like You’.  The bands debut album ‘Chapman Square’ was released last year, peaking at no.4.  The long player contain the three singles released to date, each of which have made the top ten. Although the band are currently based in London their individual members come from cities around the UK including Liverpool, Nottingham, Sheffield and Brighton.  They write their own material and so stand clear of any accusations of being just another boy band.  They also play their own instruments and have had widespread praise for their live shows.  This has already become their fourth top forty hit but this release could help to see it peak just a little bit higher.

‘Sun Blows Up Today’ is almost the new single from the Flaming Lips.  I say almost as there is some uncertainty as to whether sales will count towards the chart as it is being offered to those fans who choose to pre-order their forthcoming album ‘The Terror’ which is released in early April.  It doesn’t feature on the album itself although it is being used on a Hyundai advert in the US. The bands last (and so far biggest) hit came with ‘The Yeah Yeah Yeah Song (With All Your Power)’ which peaked at no.16 back in 2006 although their 2009 album ‘Embryonic’ did make the top ten in the US.  Last year saw them release the album ‘The Flaming Lips And Heady Fwends’ but it only reached no.99 having not been promoted with any singles. Regardless of the fate of this single there is considerable interest in the new album and I expect it to end up doing well for them.

DJ and producer Steve Mill releases his brand new single ‘Nobody’ this week on Champion Records and it features a little help on vocals from Keisher Downie. The digital format of the release contains four new mixes; the Main Mix, the Dub Mix, the Jam & Keys Remix and the Jam & Keys Dub. Although he started experimenting with music from around the age of 17 it wasn’t until the age of 20 that he got his big break when Hernan Catteneo included his track ‘Lia’ on his compilation ‘Sequential Vol 2’. Since that point he has worked on a variety of different remixes on labels such as Global Underground, Plastic City, Vapour and Balance.  He is also in constant demand around the world for his DJing skills. Most recently he has remixed ‘Like Now’ by Jevne featuring Robert Owens and I’m sure we will be hearing much more about him in the year that lays ahead.

‘Riot’ is the latest single release from Welsh rockers Bullet For My Valentine and its the second to be taken from their forthcoming album ‘Temper Temper’.  That long player hits the shops next week and will be available in standard and deluxe formats. It has been five years now since ‘Scream Aim Fire’ became the last of their five top forty hits, with four of them coming from the bands debut album ‘The Poison’. Their biggest was ‘All These Things I Hate (Revolve Around Me)’ which peaked at no.29. Despite the relative lack of hit singles, album sales have been strong with their last two long players ‘Scream Aim Fire’ and ‘Fever’ both reaching the top five. The first single to come from the album was the title track, but that dropped short of the top 100.  That statistic suggests that fans are quite content to wait for the arrival of the album and with that in mind I don’t really expect this to add to their tally of top forty singles.

This week sees the fifth and final release in the ‘Conventional Weapons’ series by My Chemical Romance. The series picks up unreleased songs recorded in 2009 prior to the release of their studio album ‘Dangerous Days : The True Lives Of The Fabulous Killjoys’. They have each been individually released on 7″ vinyl but will also form part of a box set that collects them all together. This weeks release features the tracks ‘Surrender The Night’ and ‘Burn Bright’ but given that the previous four singles have dropped short of the top 75 I can’t see this making the grade.  You would have to go back to 2010 to find their last top forty hit with ‘Na Na Na (Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na)’ while their only no.1 came with ‘Welcome To The Black Parade’ in 2006. They are currently in the studio working away on their fifth album though it is not yet known how soon this will see the light of day.

‘How To Be A Heartbreaker’ is the latest single release from the Welsh singer / songwriter Marina & The Diamonds,  It features on the American version of her album ‘Electra Heart’ but was not included on the UK tracklisting. The digital format of the release contains a series of brand new mixes including the Kat Krazy Remix, the Almighty Remix, the Kitty Pryde Remix and the Baunz Remix. Last year saw ‘Primadonna’ become her biggest hit to date, peaking at no.11 while her ‘Electra Heart’ album entered the chart at no.1. As such she will be hoping to go on to even bigger and better things during 2013. She has some live shows planned in Europe during April, though she is yet to confirm any appearances in the UK. This is a catchy song with a striking video and given that UK fans don’t own this on the album I think it will go on to give her a fifth top forty hit.

Finally up this week comes Charlene Soraia with her new single ‘Ghost’. She studied at the BRIT music school alongside Adele and Kate Nash despite not having a GCSE in Music, She started performing as a solo artist in 2008 and topped the UK Folk Chart on iTunes. She first came to prominence when her cover of The Calling’s ‘Wherever You Will Go’ was used in an advert for Twinings Tea.  The track was given a further boost when sung by X Factor contestant Sophie Habibis and it eventually went on to make the top three. The track featured on her debut album ‘Moonchild’ which reached no.59 on the UK chart.  Now her second album ‘Love Is The Law’ is set for release later this year, and this is the first single to be taken from it. Without the promotion that her hit single was able to gain there is a risk that this will simply go past unnoticed although it is a great song.

Also released this week are ‘Fancy Dress’ by Don Broco, ‘Every Day’ by Eric Prydz, ‘Bugatti’ by Hood featuring Future, ‘Lose You Tonight’ by Kristina Train, ‘Pull Me Down’ by Mikky Ekko and ‘Beach Of Diamonds’ by Pure Love.

My money is on Macklemore & Ryan Lewis featuring Wanz to top the charts next weekend with ‘Thrift Shop’ but Disclosure featuring AlunaGeorge will also be a strong contender with ‘White Noise’. Don’t forget to stop by next week when artists releasing new singles look set to include Gabrielle Aplin, Rita Ora, Tegan & Sera and Toploader.  Until then have yourself a good week.
