Chart Chat Edition 690 – W/C 10.02.13

Chart Chat Edition 690 – Week Commencing Sunday 10th February 2013

There were one new entries, four re-entries, seven climbers, twenty five songs going down and one non mover on this weeks chart (to no.3). It was all change at the top as Macklemore & Ryan Lewis featuring Wanz climbed one to no.1 while Disclosure featuring Aluna George climbed twenty six places to no.2 with ‘White Noise’ and in doing so they became the weeks highest climber.

Bingo Players featuring Far East Movement fell two to no.3 with ‘Get Up (Rattle)’ while Emeli Sande climbed four places to no.4 with ‘Clown’. Fall Out Boy were this weeks only new entry going straight in at no.5 with ‘My Songs Knew What You Did In The Dark’ and Will.i.am featuring Britney Spears fell three to no.6 with ‘Scream And Shout’. Calvin Harris featuring Tinie Tempah fell one to no.7 with ‘Drinking From The Bottle’ and Rihanna featuring Mikky Ekko went down three to no.8 with ‘Stay’. Taylor Swift fell five to no.9 with ‘I Knew You Were Trouble’ and Dizzee Rascal climbed a further four places to no.10 with ‘Bassline Junkie’.

Three other climbers were to be found in what remained of the top twenty. Little Mix climbed nineteen places to no.12 with ‘Change Your Life’ and Lawson went up seven to no.13 with ‘Learn To Love Again’.  The final climber went to Ellie Goulding who went up five places to no.16 with ‘Explosions’.

There are four re-entries and two climbers in the lower half of the chart. The Fray re-entered at no.30 with ‘How To Save A Life’ while Imagine Dragons climb five to no.33 with ‘Radioactive’. Disclosure featuring Sam Smith went back up two to no.34 with ‘Latch’ and One Direction re-entered at no.36 with ‘Little Things’. Nickelback re-entered at no.38 with ‘How You Remind Me’ and Jake Bugg rounded off proceedings by re-entering at no.40 with ‘Lightning Bolt’.

Swedish DJ and producer Avicii is back in action this week and is teaming up with Nicky Romero on his new single ‘I Could Be The One’. He first appeared on the chart under the name Tim Berg with the single ‘Seek Bromance’ but achieved top five success with his Leona Lewis collaboration ‘Collide’ and his own single ‘Levels’ which was recorded under his Avicii monicker. This track has already been a hit across Europe, making the top twenty in Sweden, Austria, Denmark, Ireland and the Netherlands. The digital format of the single contains five new mixes of the track; the Nicktim Radio Edit, the Nicktim Instrumental Mix, the Nicktim Mix, the Nicktim Audrio Remix and Nicktim Didrick Remix.  The accompanying video was first uploaded to YouTube during December and has received over 13m views to date.  This should see Avicii challenging for the top spot next Sunday afternoon.

Charli XCX was recently selected to provide the support to Ellie Goulding on the European leg of her tour and this week sees the release of her brand new single ‘You (Ha Ha Ha)’.  The digital format of the release contains several new mixes including the BURNS Violet Cloud Version, the Goldroom Remix, the Mele Remix, the MS MR Remix which all sit alongside the main track and an instrumental version. Although it wasn’t a hit in the UK she did feature on Icona Pop’s single ‘I Love It’ which reached the top ten around the world including Australia, Austria, Sweden and New Zealand. She started making music as long ago as 2008  when she was just 16 and this represents her sixth single release so far. I’m not sure that this will manage to pick up enough airplay for it to become a mainstream chart hit but it is still a breath of fresh air in amongst this weeks new releases.

Gabrielle Aplin has been tipped by many as one to watch in 2013.  She opened her account with a cover of Frankie Goes To Hollywood’s ‘The Power Of Love’ which featured in the John Lewis Christmas advert and was given a further boost when performed by the eventual X Factor winner James Arthur. She was expected by some to win the MTV Brand New For 2013 competition but was pipped to it by the relatively unknown Ebony Day.  This week sees the release of her new single ‘Please Don’t Say You Love Me’ and this will help to determine whether she can be more than just a one hit wonder.  The digital EP contains new tracks ‘Stranger Side’ and ‘Rings Round Roses’ alongside a piano version of the main track. I think that time will show her to be more of an album artist so I expect more success for her ‘English Rain’ album which is due out in April than for this single.

‘Radioactive’ is the fourth single to be taken from Rita Ora’s debut album Ora.  The first two (‘How We Do (Party)’ and ‘R.I.P.’) both topped the chart with the third ‘Shine Ya Light’ going on to make the top ten. The track has already made the top forty but its hoped its digital release will boost its performance on the chart.  The digital format contains five new mixes; the Zed Bias Remix, the Waze and Odyssey Remix, the Flexican Remix, the Baggi Begovic Remix and the Lucien Foort Remix. The accompanying video was directed by Syndrome and was first released back in December and has received almost 4m views since then. She has been nominated for BRIT Awards in the categories of British Breakthrough Act and British Single Of The Year so will be hoping to be a winner at the ceremony in February. Given that so many fans already own the album I can’t see this making the top ten despite the new set of mixes.

Toploader are back after a two year absence this week with the release of their brand single ‘Turn It Around’.  The track was co-written by Eg White, produced by Andrew Green and has already managed to pick up considerable airplay on Radio 2. The band remain best known for their cover of ‘Dancing In The Moonlight’ which peaked at no.19 on its first release but eventually made it as far as no.7. ‘Achilles Heel’ was their other top ten hit, with a further three singles reaching the top twenty. The final of those came in 2002, and although they returned in 2011 with their album ‘Only Human’ it failed to chart or provide any hit singles.  ‘Turn It Around’ is released digitally with 2013 Live Session versions of ‘Only For A While’, ‘A Balance To All Things’ and ‘Breathe’. They are currently planning a live tour for later in the year and this stands a chance of returning them to the mainstream chart.

London based rock band Anavae release their new single ‘Storm Chaser’ this week. The digital EP contains an acoustic take on ‘Storm Chaser’ along with new tracks ‘Ghosts In The Machine’, ‘This Light’ and the Ransom & Locke Remix of ‘Aequilux’. Last year saw them release the EP ‘Into The Aether’ of which the lead track ‘World In A Bottle’ received over 200k views on YouTube. That EP was supplemented by ‘Aerology’ which featured six remixes of tracks from ‘Into The Aether’. They will be playing live dates as part of the Ourzone FOUND Tour 2013 which sees the band team up with I Divide. Fans wishing to attend need only pay a transaction fee of £2.95 with the tour set to take in six major cities; London, Birmingham, Manchester, Sheffield, Glasgow and Newcastle.  They are a developing band who are attracting the right attention but this won’t see them inside the top forty.

‘Waiting Alone’ is the new single from Shiny Toy Guns. They are an American band who originally formed back in 2002 and this track is taken from their third studio album ‘III’. Their first album ‘We Are The Pilots’ was released in 2006 while the follow up ‘Season Of Poison’ came out in 2008. A compilation album entitled ‘Girls Le Disko’ was also released in 2009. Their only minor hit in the UK came back in 2007 when ‘You Are The One’ cracked the top 100, but it only peaked at no.94. Their biggest hit so far has been ‘Major Tom (Coming Home)’ which reached the top fifty in Canada and the top ten in the US heat chart. The band are on tour in the US across February and March but currently have no dates planned for the UK. Based on past history I cannot see this making a strong challenge to the top forty, particularly as it is a one track download and most fans will have the album already.

Calgary bred twins Tegan & Sara are back in action this week with their new single ‘Closer’.  It features on their new long player ‘Hearthrob’ which is also released this week with the video to this track forming part of the deluxe digital version.  The album has reached no.2 in their native Canada while also topping the rock and alternative charts in the US.  That makes it the best performing of all their seven studio albums released since they formed back in 1995, and this single has also done well as it gave them their first top forty hit in Canada. The accompanying promotional video was directed by Isaac Rentz who has previously worked with Blink 182, Cage The Elephant, Great Lake Swimmers and The All American Rejects.  The album may do ok for them but it seems unlikely that this will pick up enough stand alone download sales to reach the top forty.

Finally this week comes ‘Winter Trees’ which is the brand new single by The Staves. They are a folk band from Watford consisting of a trio of sisters whose surname is Stavely-Taylor but on one occasion while late for an open mic night they were chalked up on the board as The Staves and it stuck as a name for the band. Their reputation has been steadily growing and they guested on Tom Jones album ‘Praise & Blame’ before supporting Mt. Desolation on their UK tour. They toured the US with the Civil Wars and eventually released their debut long player ‘Dead & Born & Grown’ at the end of last year. The album was produced by Ethan Johns and Glyn Johns and features this track alongside eleven others. They are not really likely to pick up much mainstream radio play and as such this won’t be troubling the chart compilers over the coming week.

The only other single released this week of any note is ‘Now Is The Start’ by A Fine Frenzy.

It looks set to be a closely fought battle at the top as Macklemore & Ryan Lewis featuring Wanz go head to head with Avicii & Nicky Romero. Don’t forget to stop by next week when artists releasing new singles look set to include Alicia Keys, Kate Nash, One Direction and Tyler James featuring Kano.  Until then have yourself a good week.
