Chart Chat Edition 694 – W/C 10.03.13

Chart Chat Edition 694 – Week Commencing Sunday 10th March 2013

There were three new entries, two re-entries, nine climbers, twenty two songs going down and four non movers on this weeks chart.  One of those came at the top of the chart as Justin Timberlake held firm with ‘Mirrors’ while Bruno Mars benefited from a promotional tour of the UK as ‘When I Was Your Man’ climbed five to no.2.

Bastille fell one to no.3 with ‘Pompeii’ and P!nk featuring Nate Ruess climbed six to no.4 with ‘Just Give Me A Reason’. Macklemore featuring Ryan Lewis & Wanz fell one to no.5 with ‘Thrift Shop’ and ‘One Way Or Another (Teenage Kicks)’ went down three to no.6 for One Direction. Bridgit Mendler went straight in at no.7 with ‘Ready Or Not’ and Avicii vs Nicky Romero fell three to no.8 with ‘I Could Be The One (Nicktim)’. Baauer went down one to no.9 with ‘Harlem Shake’ and Taylor Swift rounded off the top ten by going down four to no.10 with ‘I Knew You Were Trouble’.

Four climbers and one re-entry were to be found in the remainder of the top twenty. Disclosure featuring AlunaGeorge climbed two to no.11 with ‘White Noise’ and Olly Murs went up six places to no.13 with ‘Army Of Two’. Fleetwood Mac re-entered at no.15 with ‘Everywhere’ while The Lumineers went back up three to no.18 with ‘Ho Hey’.  Finally The Script climbed six to no.20 with ‘If You Could See Me Now’.

There were two new entries, one re-entry and three climbers in the lower half of the chart. Bruno Mars climbed four places to no.21 with ‘Locked Out Of Heaven’ while The 1975 went straight in at no.25 with ‘Chocolate’. Drake went up eight places to no.29 with ‘Starting From The Bottom’ and Stereophonics got a new entry at no.30 with ‘Indian Summer’.  Laura Mvula climbed one to no.31 with ‘Green Garden’ and Olly Murs re-entered at no.37 with ‘Troublemaker’.

‘Close To Nowhere’ is the brand new single by the former Five Star singer Deniece Pearson.  She appeared on last years series of The Voice and was selected to appear on Tom Jones team.  Unfortunately she was eliminated in the early rounds of the competition, losing out to rival Ruth Brown. She went on to perform in panto at Milton Keynes theatre last December and also released a self titled mini album. She is currently appearing as support to The Jacksons on the UK leg of their Unity tour. As part of Five Star she achieved fifteen top forty singles including their biggest hit ‘Rain & Shine’ which peaked at no.2. However it has now been some twenty five years since their last top forty appearance with ‘Rock My World’. It would be great to see her back in the charts in 2013 but I suspect that without major label backing she may struggle.

Essex born singer / songwriter Ed Drewett releases his latest single ‘Drunk Dial’ this week on the Baer Music label.  He has yet to achieve a top forty single in his own right with his only single so far ‘Champagne Lemonade’ peaking at no.84 back in 2010. However he has provided guest vocals on two hits by Professor Green; ‘I Need You Tonight’ which peaked at no.3 and ‘Never Be A Right Time’ which reached no.35. He has also co-written tracks for Olly Murs and The Wanted including their no.1 hit ‘All Time Low’. The digital format of the release contains an explicit version of the track alongside the Artful Club Mix and the new track ‘Vital Signs’. He is currently in the studio working on his debut album which is expected to be released later this year. I think this will give him a first taste of top forty action, and it looks to be a bright year ahead for him.

‘5-HT’ is the new single by pop trio The Good Natured.  It is produced by pop maestro Richard X who has worked with the likes of Liberty X, Kelis, Rachel Stevens and Sugababes. While it started as a solo project for singer Sarah McIntosh back in 2008 they became a full band in 2011. The digital format of the release features the the GHOSTWERK Remix, the Kat Krazy Remix and a cracking cover version of the Fine Young Cannibals ‘She Drives Me Crazy’. It’s not the first time they have covered a well known pop song as they posted a cover of the New Order classic ‘Blue Monday’ on their website at the end of February. The band are set to support Imagine Dragons on six dates of their UK tour during April and hope to headline some dates of their own later in the year. I love this single and have my fingers crossed that we will see this inside next weekends top forty.

Synthpop duo Hurts are back with their first new material since 2010’s debut album ‘Happiness’. The single is entitled ‘Miracle’ and the digital format comes with five new mixes of the track; the BURNS 50HZ Version, the Breakage’s an Inferior Tiles Moment Mix, the Russ Chimes Remix, the Kill FM Remix and the Miraculous Remix. Of the five singles released from ‘Happiness’ only ‘Wonderful Life’ reached the top forty, peaking at no.21. That didn’t stop the album making the top five in the UK while also making the top ten Austria, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Ireland, Italy and Switzerland. Their second album ‘Exile’ is also due for release this week and has been promoted by the song ‘Sandman’ which has been available to download for free from their own website. Fans have also been teased with a two minute promo to new song ‘The Road’. Given that this single coincides with the album I suspect it will miss out on becoming a big hit.

‘Lay Down Your Weapons’ is the second single by British rapper K Koke and sees him team up with Rita Ora. His debut single ‘Turn Back’ featured Maverick Sabre and peaked at no.70 while his debut album ‘I Ain’t Perfect’ is scheduled for release on the Roc Nation label later this year. He was originally signed to the label back in 2011 but progress was delayed when he was arrested, but later acquitted on charges of attempted murder.  He spent seven months on remand but to their credit his label stood by him. He initially enjoyed success with the release of his ‘Pure Koke Volume 1’ mixtape which was a big underground hit but Volume 2 was released with little promotion due to him being on remand.  Few can dispute his talent and hopefully this is the first step towards a successful music career both in the mainstream charts and in the clubs.

The hotly tipped duo MS MR release their new single ‘Fantasy’ this week.  The band have been rapidly building their reputation with some music critics drawing comparisons to both Florence & The Machine and Marina & The Diamonds. The single follows on from their ‘Candy Bar Creep Show EP’ which was released last year.  ‘Bones’ was one of the tracks from that and it was featured in a recent edition of the TV show ‘Game Of Thrones’. Their debut album is scheduled for release in May and will also include their initial single ‘Hurricane’. The band have been touring as support to Bastille during March and will be aiming to headline some shows of their own later this year. They have certainly succeeded in creating a buzz and this could well see them appear inside the top forty, particularly now that they have major label backing in the shape of Sony.

The originally featured in the Pussycat Dolls and these days is perhaps best known as an X Factor judge but this week sees the return of Nicole Scherzinger as a recording artist. She has had a checkered career which kicked off with ‘Baby Love’ in 2007.  That peaked outside the top ten and the associated album was cancelled. Since then ‘Poison’ and ‘Right There’ have made the top three and ‘Don’t Hold Your Breath’ topped the chart. ‘Boomerang’ represents her first new material since her ‘Killer Love’ album and she will be hoping to challenge for the top spot next week.  Her last two singles ‘Wet’ and ‘Try With Me’ both missed the top ten and with Simon Cowell recently dumping Tulisa as an X Factor judge following her chart underperformance she will be keen to impress.  The video has been picking up plenty of airplay and this should be a bit hit next weekend.

Producers and remixers The Wideboys are back in action this week with ‘Addicted 2 The Bass (The Refix)’. The digital format of the release comes with an impressive ten new mixes; the Wideboys Refix Radio Edit, the Wideboys Club Mix, the Lazy Rich Club Mix, the Nick Thayer Mix, the Nick Thayer Dub Mix, the Timothy Allan Loverush Mix, the Notches Mix, the Mark Krupp Mix, the Hi Def Mix and the Howe & BuzZTech Mix. Their last top forty hit came in 2008 when they teamed up with Shaznay Lewis on ‘Daddy O’. They are in constant demand for their remixing skills and have worked with a variety of artists over the past year including Alexandra Burke, Cheryl Cole, Leona Lewis, Pet Shop Boys and Will Young.  This track was originally released last Summer but failed to chart so it remains to be seen if it will cross over onto the mainstream charts this time around.

Finally this week is ‘Attracting Flies’, the new single by AlunaGeorge which was recently premiered on the Zane Lowe radio show. The band is named after the duo behind it Aluna Francis and George Francis and gained their first big hit earlier this year when collaborating with Disclosure on their top three single ‘White Noise’. They have been around the music scene since 2011 and were selected as The Guardian’s Band Of The Day in March of that year. Despite that they were still shortlisted for the Critics Choice Award at the 2013 Brit Awards and also finished as runners up in the BBC Sound Of 2013 poll. Their debut album is entitled ‘Body Music’ and is scheduled for release in June this year. It will feature ‘Attracting Flies’ and last years single ‘Your Drums, Your Love’ which reached the top 50. This should add to their reputation and also provide them with a first top forty hit in their own right.

Also released this week are ‘Levitate’ by Hadouken!, ‘Never Let It Go / Sympathy Or Love’ by LULS, ‘Pointing Fingers’ by Stacey Jackson, ‘Just No Good For Me’ by Times Red, ‘My Heart Skips A Beat’ by TOY and ‘Tightrope’ by Walk The Moon.

My money is on Nicole Scherzinger to hit the top spot next weekend but I expect Justin Timberlake and Bruno Mars to still run her close. Don’t forget to stop by next week when artists releasing new singles look set to include Depeche Mode, Frank Ocean, The Saturdays featuring Sean Paul and Suede.  Until then have yourself a good week.
