Chart Chat Edition 701 – W/C 28.04.13

Chart Chat Edition 701 – Week Commencing Sunday 28th April 2013

There were five new entries, two re-entries, eight climbers, twenty three songs going down and no non movers on this weeks chart (to no.3).  However as predicted it was all change at the top as Daft Punk featuring Pharrell Williams climbed two to no.1 with ‘Get Lucky’ while Rudimental featuring Ella Eyre fell one to no.2 with ‘Waiting All Night’. featuring Justin Bieber fell one to no.3 with ‘#thatPower’ but Calvin Harris featuring Ellie Goulding climbed three to no.4 with ‘I Need Your Love’. Macklemore & Ryan Lewis climbed seven places to no.5 with ‘Can’t Hold Us’ and Duke Dumont featuring A*M*E went down two to no.6 with ‘Need U (100%)’. P!nk featuring Nate Ruess fell two places to no.7 with ‘Just Give Me A Reason’ and Nelly also fell two to no.8 with ‘Hey Porsche’. Loveable Rogues went straight in at no.9 with ‘What A Night’ and the top ten was concluded by Pitbull featuring Christina Aguilera who fell two to no.10 with ‘Feel This Moment’.

One new entry and four climbers were to be found in the remainder of the top twenty. Passenger got a new entry at no.11 with ‘Let Her Go’ and Imagine Dragons climbed back up one to no.13 with ‘Radioactive’. Little Mix featuring Missy Elliot went up seven to no.16 with ‘How Ya Doin’?’ and Iggy Azalea climbed up two to no.17 with ‘Work’. The final climber went to Aluna George who went up eleven places to no.19 with ‘Attracting Flies’.

There were three new entries, two re-entries and two climbers in the lower half of the chart. David Guetta featuring Akon & Ne-Yo re-entered at no.21 with ‘Play Hard’ while The 1975 went back up one to no.26 with ‘Chocolate’. featuring Britney Spears climbed back up three to no.32 with ‘Scream And Shout’ and Nicky Romero featuring Nervo got a new entry at no.33 with ‘Like Home’. Carly Rae Jepsen went straight in at no.35 with ‘Tonight I’m Getting Over You’ while The Goo Goo Dolls re-entered at no.39 with ‘Iris’. The final new entry went to Amelia Lily at no.40 with ‘Party Over’.

First up this week is Former Miss UK Kirsty Bertarelli who teams up with Ronan Keating on her new single ‘Send Out A Message (To The World)’. She is married to Swiss businessman Ernesto Bertarelli and together they were placed 6th in the Sunday Times Rich List of 2012 with an estimated fortune of £7.4bn. She co-wrote the track ‘Black Coffee’ which was later recorded by All Saints and topped the charts in 2000 while her 2011 single ‘Green’ was adopted by the WWF as the anthem to mark 50 years of their conservation work. Her debut album ‘Love Is’ and was partly recorded in Nashville, Tennessee and is produced by the legendary Don Mescall who has previously worked with Rascal Flatts and Ronan Keating.  I’m not sure whether this will chart next weekend but a lot will depend on how much airplay this can pick up on the commercial radio stations.

‘Rise & Fall’ is the new single by Michael Molloy & Alex Evans. Alongside the main track it features new ‘Hope You Know’ as the b side. Sadly Michael Molloy is no longer with us having been killed in a coach crash on the A3 on the way home from Bestival last year but the decision was taken to release this as a single following support from Radio 1 DJ Rob Da Bank.  Michael’s brother Joe said that it was his brothers ambition to have his music recognised by the wider world and his family are aiming to achieve that for him. His mother Frances said “the release of Michael’s single will represent a small step in the long hard job and rebuilding our lives”. He was just 18 when he died and it would be a fitting tribute to him for him to achieve a chart hit next weekend. We will keep our fingers crossed that this single can achieve just that.

‘Here’s To Everything (Ooh La La)’ is the third single from former X Factor contestant Misha B.  Her debut single ‘Home Run’ reached at no.11 but her last release ‘Do You Think Of Me’ gave her a top ten hit, peaking at no.9.  The digital release features five mixes; the Radio Edit, the Bimbo Jones Remix, the Sweater Beats Remix, the Motez Remix and the Sharoque Remix. She wrote the track with Talay Riley and it samples the hook from Fugees 1996 single ‘Fu-Gee-La’ which itself borrowed from Teena Marie’s song ‘Ooh La La La’. The accompanying music video was directed by Dava Cut and produced by Roger Ubina. It has had over 650k views since its original upload late in March. The track has a feel good factor it and is sure to sound good if we can get some Spring sunshine. This will certainly chart next weekend and could well provide her with a second top ten hit.

‘U Got The Power’ is the new single by Manchester based band Swiss Lips and its released on the 4 Tunes .  It’s the follow up to their previous single ‘Danz’ which was released in February this year.  The digital format contains the new track ‘Diamonds’ alongside three new remixes; The Horrors – Tom Furse Remix, the Bastille Remix and the Monsieur Adi Remix. Fans can also pick up a free download of the Avec Sans remix by visiting the bands website. The band are due to play gigs in both Leeds and Canterbury this week with June dates in London and Manchester to follow.  They have also signed up to play the Leopallooza Festival which takes place in Cornwall and the Scilly Isles during August.  The band managed to gain some support from Daily Star journalist Kim Carr but I’m not sure this will quite reach the top forty, but their album due in the Summer should pick up some new fans.

Watford based folk rock trio The Staves are back with their brand new single ‘Facing West’ this week.  The single is released digitally and also includes the tracks ‘What Good Am I’ and ‘Rain City’. The band consists of three sisters, and they famously appeared on Tom Jones 2010 album ‘Praise And Blame’ before supporting Mt Desolation on their UK tour. They toured on both sides of the Atlantic and managed to widen their US fanbase by touring with The Civil Wars and Bon Iver.  They released their debut album ‘Dead & Born & Grown’ to critical acclaim at the end of last year with renowned duo Glyn and Ethan Johns taking control of production duties. The band are currently in the midst of a UK tour which concludes in May.  History suggests that they are unlikely to reach the top forty but they are certainly growing in popularity as time goes on.

Amplify Dot releases her new single ‘Kurt Cobain’ this week, and the digital release features three new remixes; the Stinkahbell Remix, the Butch Clancy Remix and the Kry Wolf Remix. Last week saw her perform a DJ set on Radio 1 while the video to accompany this single has received over 175k views since it was originally posted to YouTube back at the end of March. It marks her first single on the Virgin label and follows on from her seven track EP ‘Short Back & Sides’ which was released last year. She has also released singles ‘Semantics’ (which featured Kano), ‘Born Ready’ and ‘King Kong’ prior to signing to Virgin, and currently appears on two of the remixes to accompany the new Rascals single ‘Fire Blaze’. She looks destined for big things in 2013, but whether this comes too early for a top forty appearance remains to be seen.

‘Don’t Waste My Time’ is the new single by former bass player with The Jam, Bruce Foxton.  He has only achieved one top forty hit as a solo artist, which was ‘Freak’ and that peaked at no.23 back in 1983. That track featured on his solo album ‘Touch Sensitive’ which was released prior to him joining Stiff Little Fingers. He founded The Casbah Club in 2006 and went on to reunite with Weller, providing bass and backing vocals on his ‘Wake Up The Nation’ album.  He also joined Weller on stage at The Royal Albert Hall in 2010, but returned to his solo career in 2012 with the release of his album ‘Back In The Room’.  He is currently touring with his From The Jam project, and with this only being a single track digital release there will be little incentive for the fans to buy it.  He remains a talent in his own right even if his most successful work has not been part of his solo career.

Jay Leighton releases his brand new single ‘Wish I Was Springsteen’ this week. The single precedes his album ‘Hours’ which is due to hit the shops in mid May. The video to the single was posted to YouTube back in March and has received over 10k views since then. Fans can also view videos there to other tracks including ‘Icarus And Me’ and ‘As The Sun Comes Up’. He was signed to Island Records with his band Buffalo 77 but has turned to a solo career following the bands split. He is due to play a series of live shows during May, with fans paying minimal entrance fees to see him play (his appearance in Norwich for example is just £1 on the door). For those readers who live in the capital he will also be appearing on BBC Radio London on the 2nd May. For me Jay is the kind of artist who will sell more albums than singles so I don’t expect this to reach the top forty next Sunday afternoon.

Finally this week sees Emilia Mituku teams up with Klaus Doldinger on her latest single release ‘You’re Breaking My Heart’.  The single is taken from her album ‘I Belong To You’ which was released back in February. Fans can pick up a free EP which features four tracks by signing up to her website. She has enjoyed one chart hit ‘Big Big World’ which was recorded under just the name Emelia when she was just 19. By her own admission she is a very different artist to back then, and as with Jay Leighton I would expect her to be more successful shifting albums than appearing on the singles chart. She is due to appear at the Cheltenham Jazz Festival later this week but has no other live appearances currently confirmed. It’s great to have her back in the music business although this is not a song which I expect to make big inroads into the mainstream UK chart.

Also released this week are ‘Human’ by Daughter, ‘You & Me’ by Disclosure featuring Eliza Doolittle, ‘Your Loving Arms’ by Elsie, ‘FM (EP)’ by Fleetwood Mac, ‘If I Knew Then’ by Leanne Mitchell, ‘Shameless’ by Lissie, ‘Where I’m Coming From’ by Little Nikki, ‘We Found Love’ by Palma Violets, ‘Feel The Moment’ by Pitbull featuring Christina Aguilera and ‘Where You Stand’ by Travis.

I expect Goo Goo Dolls back inside the top ten and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis will continue to climb.  That said I don’t forsee anyone toppling Daft Punk featuring Pharrell Williams from the top spot. Don’t forget to stop by next week when artists releasing new singles look set to include Courteeners, Dido, Gabrielle Aplin and Mariah Carey featuring Miguel.  Until then have yourself a good week.
