Chart Chat Edition 717 – W/C 18.08.13

Chart Chat Edition 717 – Week Commencing Sunday 18th August 2013

Introduction

Welcome to edition 717 of Chart Chat, the music review site which has been running for over thirteen years.  You can find us on Twitter as @ChartChatUK so feel free to follow us and pass comment on the weeks new releases yourselves.  As always we will take a look at the current top forty followed by some reviews of the weeks new releases.  There is a new edition published weekly so if you are new here then I hope you will choose to revisit.  In response to some readers comments there is a slightly clearer layout now so that individual songs can be picked out rather than having to trawl through paragraphs of texts.

Chart Review

There were seven new entries, two climbers, twenty eight songs going down and three non movers on this weeks chart.

It was all change at the top as Ellie Goulding went straight in at no.1 with ‘Burn’ but Avicii held on to be her nearest rival as ‘Wake Me Up’ was a non mover at no.2.

Last weeks chart topper ‘We Can’t Stop’ fell two places to no.3 for Miley Cyrus while Lana Del Rey vs Cedric Gervais were a non mover at no.4 with the remix of ‘Summertime Sadness’.  Lady Gaga returned to the chart at no.5 with ‘Applause’ scoring a new entry but Tinie Tempah featuring 2 Chainz fell three to no.6 with ‘Trampoline’.  Robin Thicke featuring Pharrell Williams & T.I. went down two to no.7 with ‘Blurred Lines’ and Arctic Monkeys went straight in at no.8 with ‘Why’d You Only Call Me When You’re High’. Jay-Z featuring Justin Timberlake fell two to no.9 with ‘Holy Grail’ and the top ten picture was completed by The Wanted who went straight in at no.10 with ‘We Own The Night’.

Two new entries were to be found in what remained of the top twenty. Ray Foxx featuring Rachel K Collier went straight in at no.12 with ‘Boom Boom’ while Drake featuring Majid Jordan scored a new entry at no.15 with ‘Hold On We’re Going Home’.

There was one new entry and two climbers in the lower half of the chart. Justin Timberlake went up three to no.26 with ‘Take Back The Night’ while Le Youth climbed seven to no.28 with ‘C O O L’.  The only new entry came at no.30 and went to OneRepublic with ‘Counting Stars’.

New Releases

Klangkarussell featuring Will Heard – ‘Sonnentanz (Sun Don’t Shine)’

If you’re not familiar with Austrian newcomers Klangkarussel and their track ‘Sonnentanz (Sun Don’t Shine)’ then you soon will be.  The music video has been viewed over 21m times since its original upload back in February, and the track has already appeared on numerous club music compliation CDs this Summer. The Beatport website offers a variety of mixes to download including the original full length six minute version, the Oliver Koletzki Remix, the Phoniques Sonnentrance Remix and the Kellerkind Remix while the main download single simply contains the Radio Edit which clocks in just short of four minutes.  There has been a heavy bias towards dance acts in the chart this year and this has been a massive hit in the clubs already.  Recent weeks have seen Avicii, Robin Thicke and Daft Punk all top the charts with huge sales and this could yet end up joining that list.  It will be inside the top ten at the very least.

DJ Fresh vs Diplo featuring Dominique Young Unique – ‘Earthquake’

Next up under review this week is the drum n bass producer DJ Fresh who this time has teamed up with Diplo and Dominique Young Unique on his brand new single ‘Earthquake’. The digital format contains seven mixes of the track; the Radio Edit, the TC Remix, the Vato Gonzales & Jaguar Skills Remix, the Delta Heavy Remix, the Astronomar Remix, the Goldenboy Remix and the Westfunk & Steve Smart Club Mix. DJ Fresh already has two no.1 hits to his name (‘Louder’ and ‘Hot Right Now’) alongside three other top forty hits. Although his first hit ‘Gold Dust’ came in 2010 his first single ‘Dalicks / Temple Of Doom’ was released seven years previously but made just no.60. His last album album ‘Nextlevelism’ peaked at no.14 and this single marks the first release of new material since then. This looks set to be among the highest new entries next weekend and could yet manage to put in a challenge for the top spot.

Beady Eye – ‘Shine A Light’

While Liam Gallagher and the Beady Eye boys will be pleased with the no.2 peak of their recent ‘BE’ album, they have so far failed to set the singles chart alight.  Their only top forty success so far has been ‘The Roller’ which reached no.31 back in 2011.  So far ‘Flick Of The Finger’ and ‘Second Bite Of The Apple’ have been promotional singles from ‘BE’ but neither managed to grace the top 100.  As such the odds are already stacked against their new single ‘Shine A Light’ but given the right airplay it could do well for them.  The accompanying music video was posted onto the internet in late July and has been viewed 400k times since.  The band have hit the headlines lately following the Hospitalisation of guitarist Gem Archer but thankfully he is now on the mend.  They are set to play the V Festival and can consider 2013 to be a great year for them so far.

David Bowie – ‘Valentines Day’

It has been some 44 years since David Bowie first appeared with ‘Space Oddity’ but this year has seen a dramatic return to form as his ‘The Next Day’ album became his eighth no.1 and first for twenty years. It also included ‘Where Are We Now’ which became his first top ten hit since ‘Jump They Say’ back in 1993.  This week sees the release of ‘Valentines Day’ as the fourth single to be taken from his current album, and it is released on a 7″ vinyl format. The previous three singles have shown a slowly diminishing return with the title track reaching just no.179.  To be fair this is unlikely to perform much better with the limited edition nature of the release aimed firmly at the collectors market. He has also been reissuing classic singles as 7″ picture discs and while there is certainly a market for it the sales figures are unlikely to be sufficient to see him inside the top forty for a second time this year.

District 3 – ‘District 3 EP’

For those with hazy memories District 3 and Union J were the two boy bands who went head to head for the female vote in last years X Factor competition.  Union J opened their account recently with the top ten hit ‘Carry Me Home’ and now it’s the turn of District 3 to release their new EP. Although only the lead track ‘Let’s Reload’ is likely to chart, the four other tracks featured are ‘What You Know About Me?’, ‘Hello’, ‘Dead To Me’ and ‘Chasing Silhouettes’. The single is released on the JAM label, and so they cannot count on the major label backing and promotion which some of the other former contestants have.  Sadly that fact alone will count against them, as airplay cannot be guaranteed on the main commercial stations. I think that this will make the top forty for them but I’m not sure that it will quite manage to match the top ten placing achieved by their rivals Union J.

Laura Mvula – ‘She’

Birmingham based soul singer Laura Mvula has enjoyed her year so far which started with her being shortlisted for the Critics Choice award at the BRITs. Her single ‘Green Garden’ gave her a debut top forty hit, peaking at no.31 while her album ‘Sing To The Moon’ reached the top ten.  Now this week sees the reissue of her debut single ‘She’, and the digital format comes with five new mixes of the track; the 2013 Edit, the MJ Cole Remix, the Eagles For Hands Remix, the Jakwob Remix, the Robin Hannibal Rework and the Linslee Remix. She is set to appear at the V Festival and also has a headlining tour of the UK booked in for October of this year. I think she is more likely to sell albums than singles and so I have my reservations as to how well this can do on its own.  That said it is a fine song by a great singer and it would be fantastic to see this in the top forty.

Naughty Boy featuring Emeli Sande – ‘Lifted’

Naughty Boy faces the difficult task of following up his massive chart topping hit ‘La La La’ this week but what better singer to help him out than the award winning Emeli Sande. He originally appeared on her no.21 hit ‘Daddy’ while she returned the favour on his 2012 top ten single ‘Wonder’. Now comes another collaboration with Emeli entitled ‘Lifted’, a track which will feature on his forthcoming album ‘Hotel Cabana’ and is released as a single track download this week. The album will feature his previous singles with the exception of his 2010 top ten hit ‘Never Be Your Woman’. The accompanying promotional video was uploaded to his Vevo account at the end of last month and has been viewed over 350k times since. This will undoubtedly be a decent sized hit next weekend and we should expect to at least see it somewhere inside the top ten.

Matt Cardle featuring Melanie C – ‘Loving You’

The future certainly looked bright for Matt Cardle when he won the X Factor competition back in 2010.  His first single ‘When We Collide’ topped the charts and the Gary Barlow penned ‘Run For Your Life’ also made the top ten.  His debut album ‘Letters’ peaked at no.2 and was released on Simon Cowell’s Syco label. However he then parted company with Syco before releasing his second album ‘The Fire’ on the So What label.  Critics expected it to flop but it made the top ten even if sales were less than a quarter of its predecessor.  Now he is teaming up with Melanie C for his new single ‘Loving You’, and the video has already been watched over 450k times. A Spanish language version entitled ‘Te Amo’ has also been recorded and is being released at the same time. Pre-order sales have been good and should see him back inside the top forty once more.

Sean Paul – ‘Other Side Of Love’

He may have turned 40 this year but Jamaican born Sean Paul is still turning out the hits and last year saw him join The Saturdays on their first ever no.1 hit ‘What About Us’.  As a solo artist he has enjoyed twelve top forty hits in the UK with his last hit ‘She Doesn’t Mind’ equally his best peak of no.2 which had originally been achieved by ‘We Be Burnin” in 2005. He isn’t shy about collaborating with other artists and he has appeared in the top forty six times guesting on hits by other artists. His brand new single ‘Other Side Of Love’ is released this week and is the first track to come from his as yet untitled fifth studio album which follows up last years ‘Tommahawk Technique’. The official video to the track has been viewed over 850k times since it was originally uploaded and there is every indication that this will go on to give him another top ten hit.

Also released this week are ‘Every Time I See You I Go Wild’ by B.E.F. featuring Kim Wilde, ‘This Is Gonna Hurt’ by Bonnie Tyler, ‘Laurie Blue’ by Brian Flannagan, ‘Love More’ by Chris Brown featuring Nicki Minaj, ‘I Don’t Need A Reason’ by Dizzee Rascal, ‘Cruise’ by Florida Georgia Line featuring Nelly, ‘Right Action’ by Franz Ferdinand, ‘I See You’ by Jutty Ranx, ‘Dust To Stars’ by Karen David, ‘Adored’ by The Thespians, ‘Jamaica’ by Theme Park and ‘Obsession’ by Tich.

Next week…

I’m backing Ellie Goulding to hold on at the top spot but she can expect strong competition from Klangarussell and DJ Fresh. Don’t forget to stop by next week when artists releasing new singles look set to include Bastille, Ciara featuring Nicki Minaj, Olly Murs and Shane Filan.  Until then have yourself a good week.
