Chart Chat Edition 740 – W/C 26.01.14

Chart Chat Edition 740 – Week Commencing Sunday 26th January 2014

Introduction

Welcome to edition 740 of Chart Chat, the music review site which has been running for over fourteen years.  You can find us on Twitter as @ChartChatUK so feel free to follow us and pass comment on the weeks new releases yourselves.  As always we will take a look at the current top forty followed by some reviews of the weeks new releases.  There is a new edition published weekly so if you are new here then I hope you will choose to revisit.

Chart Review

There were six new entries, four climbers, twenty seven songs going down and three non movers on this weeks chart. There was a new no.1 as Clean Bandit featuring Jess Glynne went straight in at the top which meant that Pharrell Williams had to make way falling one to no.2 with ‘Happy’.

The Vamps went straight in at no.3 with ‘Wild Heart’ while Neon Jungle got a new entry at no.4 with ‘Braveheart’. Pitbull featuring Ke$ha fell three to no.5 with ‘Timber’ and Avicii went down three to no.6 with ‘Hey Brother’. Jason Derulo fell three to no.7 with ‘Trumpets’ while Fuse ODG went down two to no.8 with ‘Million Pound Girl (Badder Than Bad)’. Matrix & Futurebound featuring Max Marshall fell one to no.9 with ‘Control’ while the top ten was concluded by Vance Joy who climbed eight to no.10 with ‘Riptide’.

Only one climber could be found in what remained of the top twenty and that went to Tinie Tempah featuring Labrinth who climbed nine to no.18 with ‘Lover Not A Fighter’.

There were three new entries and two climbers in the lower half of this weeks chart. Idina Menzel climbed nine places to no.22 with ‘Let It Go’ and Beyonce went up thirteen to no.24 with ‘XO’.  Macklemore & Ryan Lewis featuring Schoolboy Q and Hollis got a new entry at no.27 with ‘White Walls’ and One Republic went straight in at no.32 with ‘If I Lose Myself’.  The final new entry came at no.33 and went to Miley Cyrus with ‘Adore You’.

New Releases

Boy George – ‘My God / Video Games’

Boy George returned to the music scene last year with his solo album ‘This Is What I Do’.  It peaked at no.33 which is just four places short of his best chart placing as a solo artist which he achieved in 1987 with ‘Sold’.  The first single to be taken from the album was ‘King Of Everything’ which returned him to the top 75 for the first time since 1995.  Now comes the follow up ‘My God’, and the digital format also features a cover of the Lana Del Rey track ‘Video Games’. The video to ‘My God’ has recently been uploaded to his Vevo account, while fans can also view the video to ‘Video Games’ which he originally recorded back in 2012. He is due to undertake a short solo tour at the end of March which takes in six dates across England and Scotland.  Sadly I don’t think this will return him to the top forty singles chart but he will be delighted with how well his album has been received.

Chris Malinchak – ‘If U Got It’

‘So Good To Me’ by twenty six year old American DJ and producer Chris Malinchak was one of the best dance tracks of 2013 and went on to peak at no.2 on the main singles chart before also achieving success in Belgium, Netherlands and Switzerland.  The video alone has been watched over 20m times! Now he is hoping to repeat that huge success with his new single ‘If U Got It’ which is released this week on the Sony Music Entertainment label.  It is only available as a single track download while fans can also see the video on his Vevo account.  It was uploaded a month ago and has received almost 200k views since then.  Other remixes are also included on YouTube including the Magician Remix, the Mark Knight Remix and the Joe Hertz Remix. With the charts badly in need of new music I can see this becoming one of next weeks big new entries.

Gorgon City featuring MNEK – ‘Ready For Your Love’

Gorgon City consist of North London based producers Foama and RackNRuin who started releasing material in 2012.  Last year saw their single ‘Real’ which saw them team up with singer Yasmin and they narrowly missed out on the top forty with the track peaking at no.44 (though it did make the top thirty in Belgium). This time around they have teamed up with singer / songwriter MNEK who is also signed to the Virgin label and who produced Little Mix’s no.1 hit ‘Wings’.  He also wrote / produced ‘All Fired Up’ for The Saturdays and wrote ‘Need U (100%)’ for Duke Dumont. The digital format contains four new mixes of the track; the MNEK Refix, the Etherwood Remix, the CLOSE Remix and the CLOSE Ready For Your Dub Mix. This is the sort of track that could well crossover onto the mainstream chart so watch out for this landing inside the top forty next weekend.

Jessica Clemmons – ‘Single Tonight’

Houston based singer / songwriter Jessica Clemmons releases ‘Single Tonight’ as a standalone track this week just two months after it featured on her EP ‘What If’.  She toured with Boyzone at the end of last year and is hoping to break the UK this year while she already has two long players to her name; ‘Loving This Day’ and ‘Permanent’.  At the time of writing no promotional video to accompany the track had been uploaded although an audio version had received over 7k listens. Her Facebook page has almost 10k likes and she has 7.5k followers on Twitter.  Given that it usually takes between 10k and 12k sales to reach the top forty she will need to reach wider than her existing fanbase if she is to succeed.  This has enjoyed some airplay on Radio 2 but I still don’t feel that it will make the transition over to the mainstream top forty on Sunday afternoon.

Just Blaze & Baauer – ‘Higher’

American hip hop producer Just Blaze teams up with fellow producer Baauer for their new single ‘Higher’.  Baauer is best known for his ‘Harlem Shake’ single which topped the charts in the US, Australia and New Zealand while also making the top three in the UK.  Just Blaze is best known for his work behind the desk for Jay-Z (on his ‘The Blueprint’, ‘The Blueprint 2’ and ‘Black Album’ releases) and Eminem (on his 2010 album ‘Recovery’).  The two producers toured together in January / February of this year but this is the first release of fruits from their labour. The official short film accompanying the single runs for over six minutes and has received over 1m views since being uploaded onto YouTube while the radio edit has 186k views to its name. This could become a monster hit over the weeks leading up to Christmas in both the dance and mainstream charts

Katy B – ‘Crying For No Reason’

Katy B is aiming for her seventh top forty hit with ‘Crying For No Reason’ which is the second single to be taken from her brand new album ‘Little Red’ which itself is out in February.  The album already features her no.14 hit ‘5AM’ but does not include her other 2013 single ‘What Love Is Made Of’ which missed out on the top twenty.  Her biggest hit to date was her 2010 collaboration with Ms Dynamite ‘Lights On’ which peaked at no.4 although she has made the top ten on two other separate occasions. She is due to embark on a five date UK tour during March and has also committed to playing Camden’s Roundhouse in late October. The video to the track was uploaded to her Vevo account a month ago and has received 945k views at the time of writing.  This looks certain to be a hit but whether it will see her back inside the top ten still remains to be seen.

Nerina Pallot – ‘The Hold Tight EP’

It has been a while since we last heard from Nerina Pallot.  Her last appearance on the chart came when her ‘Year Of The Wolf’ album reached no.31 back in 2011 but you would have all the way back to 2006 to find her only two top forty singles ‘Everybody’s Gone To War’ (#14) and ‘Sophia’ (#32).  She was nominated for Best British Female at the 2007 Brit Awards while the aforementioned track ‘Sophia’ was nominated for an Ivor Novello award during the same year. This week sees her return with her ‘The Hold Tight’ EP which alongside the title track contains four other songs; ‘This Years Model’, ‘Hard Equation’, ‘Closer’ and ‘Get To Feel’.  She worked with Diana Vickers on her first solo album, co-writing the track ‘Put It Back Together’ while her track ‘Real Late Starter’ was covered by X Factor winner Joe McElderry for his debut album ‘Wide Awake’. Sadly I can’t see this making the top forty next weekend.

Sheryl Crow – ‘Easy’

Last year saw the American release of ‘Feels Like Home’, the ninth studio album to come from US country music star Sheryl Crow. From that comes her new single ‘Easy’, a track which is aiming to become her first top forty hit since her cover of ‘First Cut Is The Deepest’ back in 2003.  It has already charted at no.72 in the US and no.45 in Japan but I can’t see it matching that success in the UK.  So far her biggest hit has been her 1994 single ‘All I Wanna Do’ which peaked at no.4 though she has since returned to the top ten on three other occasions. The video to the track was first uploaded to YouTube back in last August and has received over 570k views since. The album gets its full UK release this week so fans are likely to purchase that rather than this as a standalone track. As such this seems unlikely to play a big part in next weeks singles chart but the album could feature highly.

will.i.am featuring Miley Cyrus, Wiz Khalifa, French Montana & DJ Mustard – ‘Feelin’ Myself’

Will.i.am enlists a cast of thousands for his new single ‘Feelin’ Myself’ and is aiming for it to become his eleventh top forty hit as a solo artist.  He will be hoping it performs better than his last collaboration with Miley Cyrus ‘Fall Down’ which only reached no.34. He continued to work with her, writing and producing the track ‘Do My Thang’ on her album ‘Bangerz’. The single will feature on an expanded version of his ‘#willpower’ album and the accompanying music video has been viewed over 12m times since it was first uploaded to his Vevo account. Will is due to return this month as a judge on The Voice UK where he will sit alongside Tom Jones and newcomers Kylie Minogue and Ricky Wilson, and this will help to keep his high profile in the public eye. Miley Cyrus too is rarely out of the tabloids and with a strong song like this they have every chance of topping the charts next weekend.

Also released this week are ‘Mmm Yeah’ by Austin Mahone featuring Pitbull, ‘New York Morning’ by Elbow and ‘Leave This Island’ by Maximo Park.

Next Week…

Clean Bandit stand a good chance of holding on at the top but my money is on will.i.am featuring Miley Cyrus, Wiz Khalifa, French Montana and DJ Mustard to take over the no.1 position. Don’t forget to stop by next week when artists releasing new singles look set to include Alesso vs One Republic, James Blunt, Sampha and Toni Braxton & Babyface.  Until then have yourself a good week.
