Chart Chat Edition 752 – Week Commencing Sunday 20th April 2014

Welcome to edition 752 of Chart Chat, the music review site which has been running for over fourteen years.  You can find us on Twitter as @ChartChatUK so feel free to follow us and pass comment on the weeks new releases yourselves.  As always we will take a look at the current top forty followed by some reviews of the weeks new releases.  There is a new edition published weekly so if you are new here then I hope you will choose to revisit.

Chart Review

There were six new entries, three climbers, twenty six songs going down and five non movers on this weeks chart.  Kiesza went straight in at no.1 with ‘Hideaway’ which meant that in turn Sigma fell one place to no.2 with ‘Nobody To Love’.

Shift K3y went straight in no.3 with ‘Touch’ while John Legend was a non mover at no.4 with ‘All Of Me’. Aloe Blacc fell two places to no.5 with ‘The Man’ but Tove Lo featuring Hippie Sabotage climbed six places to no.6 with ‘Stay High’. Pharrell Williams got a non mover at no.7 with ‘Happy’ and Duke Dumont featuring Jax Jones fell two to no.8 with ‘I Got U’.  Iggy Azalea featuring Charli XCX went down four to no.9 with ‘Fancy’ and the top ten was rounded off by Route 94 featuring Jess Glynne who fell two to no.10 with ‘My Love’.

A further two new entries and one climber were to be found in what remained of the top twenty.  Elyar Fox went straight in at no.11 with ‘A Billion Girls’ and Meridian Dan featuring Big H & JME got a new entry at no.13 with ‘German Whip’. The climber went to Chris Brown, Lil Wayne and Too $hort who went up one to no.16 with ‘Loyal’

There were just two new entries and one climber in the lower half of this weeks chart.  Paolo Nutini went back up six places to no.22 with ‘Scream (Funk My Life Up)’ while Showtek & Justin Prime featuring Matthew Koma went straight in at no.29 with ‘Cannonball (Earthquake)’.  The only other new entry came at no.38 and went to DJ Snake & Lil Jon with ‘Turn Down For What’

New Releases

Cash Cash featuring Bebe Rexha – ‘Take Me Home’

Cash Cash are an American electronic dance music group who have teamed up with Albanian-American singer Bebe Rexha on their new single ‘Take Me Home’ which is released this week on the Big Beats Records Inc label. DJay Brawner directed the music video to the track which was first uploaded to YouTube back in mid December and has received over 4m views since then.  Alongside the single track download comes an EP of remixes which features five new versions; the Jordy Dazz Remix Radio Edit, the Feenixpawl Remix Radio Edit, the Chainsmokers Remix Radio Edit, the Caveat Remix Radio Edit and the Fareoh Remix Radio Edit. The track made no.7 in Australia and was also a hit in the US where it reached no.57 on the Billboard chart.  Now it will be looking to replicate that kind of success over here and I predict that it will land itself a top forty berth on Sunday afternoon.

DJ Cassidy featuring Robin Thicke & Jessie J – ‘Calling All Hearts’

DJ Cassidy was originally discovered by Sean Coombs while working in a Manhattan nightclub.  His debut album ‘Paradise Royale’ is set for release this Summer and ahead of that comes the fantastic new single entitled ‘Calling All Hearts’.  He has teamed up with r’n’b singer Robin Thicke and British vocalist Jessie J on the track which gets its official release this week.  The video to the track was first uploaded to DJ Cassidy’s YouTube account back on 4th March and it picked up 1.6m views during its first month while an audio only version enjoyed 250k views. The video depicts the band wearing cricket jumpers, a style which he has developed a reputation for wearing. The introduction of such prominent guest vocalists can only lead to more publicity and airplay for the track which looks set to be one of the highest new entries next weekend.

Dominique Young Unique – ‘Throw It Down’

Next up this week is the American rapper and model Dominique Young Unique who has already appeared as guest vocalist on top forty hits by Le Youth and DJ Diplo but is now aiming for glory on her own with the new single ‘Throw It Down’ which is released on the Sony Music Entertainment label this week. The video to the track was first uploaded to her Vevo account on the 16th March and quickly picked up over 200k views during its first two weeks while a lyric video released a month earlier also enjoyed 200k views. She made her debut as a model back in 2011 when she appeared on the catwalk for London based Kate Eary before making an appearance in the September 2012 edition of Vogue.  Her striking looks are backed up with a formidable talent for music and I can see this becoming a sizeable hit over the forthcoming weeks.

Indiana – ‘Solo Dancing’

Indiana releases her new single ‘Solo Dancing’ this week.  It has already received the accolade of being Worldwide Hype Machine Number 1 and Zane Lowe’s Hottest Record In The World. The accompanying music video has been viewed over 250k times since being uploaded in mid February and She has just concluded a nine date tour of the UK and is tipped by some critics to be big in 2014. Fans keen to hear more of her material can pick up a free download of the track ‘Touch Me In The Morning’ by visiting her Facebook page and signing up for her mailing list.  Alongside the single download comes an EP of remixes which features the Chris Lake Remix, the Joe Goddard Remix and the KAOS Remix.  Given her previous performance on the singles chart I strongly suspect that this will miss out on the top forty next Sunday afternoon.

Joel Compass – ‘Forgive Me’

‘Forgive Me’ is the new single by Joel Compass.  It’s the follow up to ‘Run’, but it has been the Huxley remix of his track ‘F***** Up’ (taken from his ‘Astronaut’ EP) which has received the most attention, appearing on recent compilation albums ‘Defected Presents The Closing Party Ibiza 2013’ and ‘This Is Dance 2014. Fans wishing to catch him live can do so at the XOYO Club in London on the 29th April while those wanting to hear more of his music can do so by signing up to his mailing list on Facebook whereby they will receive a free download of ‘Kiss Love Goodbye’.  The video to the single was uploaded in early March and it received 184k views during its first month but has someway to go if it is to overtake the 612k views notched up by ‘Run’. His talent cannot be disputed but I fear that he may have to wait a little longer if he is to achieve a top forty single.

The Kooks – ‘Down EP’

The Kooks really burst onto the scene back in 2005 when their debut album ‘Inside In / Inside Out’ yielded no less than six top forty singles.  The follow up ‘Konk’ hit the top spot and included their biggest hit ‘Always Where I Need To Be’ which peaked at no.3. Their last album ‘Junk Of My Heart’ contained no hits, but still reached no.10.  So it is important for them to ensure that their new EP ‘Down’ is a sizeable hit. It contains a total of four new songs; ‘Down’, ‘Hooray For Henry’, ‘Hold On’ and ‘Melody Maker’ and is released on the Virgin label. The band are set to undertake a short tour of the UK next month in support of the EP before heading off to the rest of Europe for further gigs there.  The video to the track was uploaded on the 21st March and managed over 300k views in the first two weeks.  That is a good sign for the lead track and it should see them back inside the charts next weekend.

Mr Probz – ‘Waves (Robin Schulz Mix)’

Next up this week is the twenty nine year old Dutch hip hop artist Mr Probz who had released a series of singles over the past seven years with little success before being launched into the limelight by his latest track ‘Waves’.  In its original format it was a top ten hit in Belgium and the Netherlands while the Robin Schulz remix saw it top the charts around Europe including Austria, Germany, Norway and Switzerland.  The original version features on his album ‘The Treatment’ which was made available via Soundcloud in September last year. The accompanying promotional video to the track was first uploaded to YouTube in early February but picked up over 5m views during the first two months.  All the indications are that this will become a huge hit for him in the UK too and it could well end up putting in a serious challenge to the top spot on Sunday afternoon.

Neon Jungle – ‘Welcome To The Jungle’

The music press seem to have taken British girlband Neon Jungle to their hearts, and their last single ‘Braveheart’ peaked at a very positive no.4. That followed on from their debut single ‘Trouble’ which reached no.12. Now the pressure is on to see if they can repeat that success with their new track ‘Welcome To The Jungle’.  The video was first uploaded in mid March and didn’t take long to reach the 500k view mark. They were nominated for the UK Favourite Breakthrough Act at the recent Nickleoden Kids Choice Awards but lost out to boyband The Vamps.  A debut album is expected to follow later in the year and they look set to provide a real alternative to more established girlbands such as Little Mix and The Saturdays.  I think that their success will continue and that this will be challenging somewhere inside the top ten on Sunday afternoon.

Sub Focus – ‘Close’

Sub Focus (aka Nick Douwma) has teamed up with the Grammy nominated singer, songwriter and producer MNEK for his new single ‘Close’.  It’s the seventh track to be taken from his current album ‘Torus’ and is aiming to become the sixth of those to reach the top thirty.  The digital EP is released this week and features four brand new versions of the track; the Radio Edit, the Friend Within Remix, the Ivy Lab Remix and the Grandtheft Remix. Last week saw him perform at the Brixton Academy while May sees him scheduled to make appearances in both Birmingham and York.  He has been on an impressive run of hit singles which have received significant backing from Radio 1 and as the album dropped short of the top ten many more people are choosing to buy the tracks as they get released.  As such I believe that this will add another hit to his already impressive tally.

Also released this week are ‘Chase The Paper’ by 50 Cent featuring Prodigy, Kidd Kidd & Styles P, ‘Spark’ by Amber Run, ‘Call You Out’ by Juce, ‘Let Go’ by Little Dragon, ‘Greatest Lovers’ by Luke Sital-Singh, ‘Walk Me To The Bridge’ by Manic Street Preachers, ‘Every Little Word’ by MNEK, ‘Vida’ by Ricky Martin and ‘Rage The Night Away’ by Waka Flocka Flame.

Next Week…

Mr Probz surely has to debut at the top of the charts next week but Cash Cash featuring Bebe Rexha, DJ Cassidy featuring Robin Thicke & Jessie J and Neon Jungle also look set for top ten new entries. Don’t forget to stop by next week when artists releasing new singles look set to include Calvin Harris, Gruff Rhys, Katy B and You Me At Six.  Until then have yourself a good weekend.
