Chart Review

There were seven new entries, three re-entries, three climbers, twenty five songs going down and two non movers on this weeks chart. Ella Henderson went straight in at no.1 with her debut single ‘Ghost’ which meant that Ed Sheeran made way falling one to no.2 with ‘Sing’.

Tiesto featuring Matthew Korma got a new entry at no.3 with ‘Wasted’ but Sam Smith went down two places to no.4 with ‘Stay With Me’. Mr Probz fell one to no.5 with the Robin Schulz mix of ‘Waves’ and Little Mix went up eighteen places to no.6 with ‘Salute’. Rik Mayall got a new entry at no.7 with his World Cup song ‘Noble England’ and Jason Derulo featuring Snoop Dogg climbed one to no.8 with ‘Wiggle’. Secondcity fell six to no.9 with ‘I Wanna Feel’ and the top ten was concluded by

There were four new entries, three re-entries and one climber in the lower half of the chart this week. Skepta featuring JME went straight in at no.21 with ‘That’s Not Me’ while Baddiel, Skinner & The Lightning Seeds re-entered with ‘3 Lions’ at no.27. Pitbull, Jennifer Lopez & Claudia Leitte got a new entry at no.29 with their World Cup song ‘We Are One (Ole Ola)’ and Raleigh Ritchie went straight in at no.30 with ‘Stronger Than Ever’. Zedd featuring Foxes re-entered with ‘Clarity’ at no.31 and 5 Seconds Of Summer were the only climber as ‘She Looks So Perfect’ went back up five to no.33. Lil Wayne featuring Drake got a new entry at no.36 with ‘Believe Me’ and DJ Snake & Lil Jon re-entered at no.37 with ‘Turn Down For What’.

New Releases

5 Seconds Of Summer – ‘Don’t Stop’

This week sees the release of the second official single from Australian pop rock band 5 Seconds Of Summer and it follows on from the recent top twenty success of their promotional track ‘Good Girls’. Their first official single ‘She Looks So Perfect’ topped the charts earlier this year in Australia, New Zealand, Ireland and the UK while reaching the top forty in US, Belgium and France.  The track is released digitally this week as an EP with the bonus tracks ‘Reject’, ‘Try Hard’ and ‘Wrapped Around Your Fingers’ while available separately is the Ashton Demo Vocal and the Calum Demo Vocal.  Fans can also look forward to the release of their self titled debut album at the end of the month.  This certainly looks set to be the highest new entry on the chart next weekend but I’m not sure as to whether it can do enough to give them a second no.1 hit.

Demi Lovato – ‘Neon Lights’

American actress and singer Demi Lovato has had five top forty hits in the UK to date but her longest running single has been ‘Let It Go’ which has so far not got above no.42 due to Idina Menzel’s version performing so well.  It has spent almost four months on the chart without ever reaching the top forty. Her biggest hit was ‘Heart Attack’ which peaked at no.3 last year, while her ‘Skyscraper’ single enjoyed a revival after X Factor winner Sam Bailey took the track to the top of the charts last Christmas.  This week sees the release of ‘Neon Lights’, her new single which is available digitally with an array of mixes; the Radio Version, the Betty Who Remix, the Cole Plante with Mylon & Shane 54 Remix, the Jump Smokers Remix, the Belanger Remix and the Tracy Young Remix. I think that this will perform well for her, and now she is more established in the UK it could return her to the top ten.

Fred V & Grafix featuring Etherwood – ‘Forest Fires’

Although it has already been available to download via their album ‘Recognise’ this week sees the release of Fred V & Grafix’s track ‘Forest Fires’ as a single.  It sees them team up with Etherwood and it comes on an EP which also contains four new mixes; the Etherwood Remix, the Taiki Nulight Remix, the Massappeals Remix and the Loire Remix. This week they are set to makes appearances in Loughborough, Magaluf and London before jetting off to Romania next Sunday. Like many similar artists they are due to make several festival appearances over the Summer including Global Gathering and Wakestock. The track is released on the famous Hospital Records label which also features such talent as Netsky, Metrik, Danny Byrd, High Contrast and London Elektricity. This could well become a crossover hit for them next Sunday afternoon.

George Ezra – ‘Budapest’

Hertford based singer / songwriter George Ezra has been tipped for big things in 2014 and featured on MTV’s ‘Brand New For 2014’ showcase.  However his most recent single ‘Cassy O” failed to give him a major hit so this week sees him reissue his debut single ‘Budapest’, a track which is also set to feature on his forthcoming album ‘Wanted On Voyage’.  An alternative version of the video to the track was posted to his Vevo account in January and picked up 5.4m views while the new version has managed 800k views during its first month of upload.  He is due to play live in Birmingham, Brighton and London this week but will also put in an appearance at Glastonbury later this month. He has major label backing in the shape of Sony and I think there is every chance that this could give him a first ever top forty appearance.

Gorgon City featuring Laura Welsh – ‘Here For You’

English dance music duo Gorgon City have enlisted the help of vocalist Laura Welsh on their new single ‘Here For You’ which is released on the Virgin EMI label this week.  It is the follow up to their top five hit ‘Ready For Your Love’ and it is set to appear on their as yet untitled album which is due for release later in 2014.  They are playing live all over Europe this week at venues as far apart as Iceland, Greece, Spain and Shropshire in the UK.  They are also down for festival appearances at Glastonbury, Leeds / Reading, Global Gathering and Kendal Calling.  Fans of Laura Welsh will also have a chance to catch her appearance at The Courtyard in Hoxton during July. An official audio upload of the track on YouTube picked up over 100k listens within a month and this looks set to be another big hit for them next Sunday afternoon.

Hudson Taylor – ‘Battles’

Hudson Taylor are an Irish folk duo who previously went under the name Harry & Alfie.  This week sees them release a new 2014 version of ‘Battles’ as a single track download and an EP which features the following additional tracks; ‘Written In Water’, ‘Open Up’ and ‘Throw Me A Line’ and an acoustic version of the title track.  This week will see them play at the Azkena Rock Festival in Spain and the Goldcoast Festival in North Devon. Later this Summer they will be appearing at other events including the Longitude Festival, T In The Park, Leeds / Reading and the Cambridge Folk Festival.  It looks set to be a good year for the duo although I don’t think that this will end up reaching the top forty. Continued live appearances will help to grow their fanbase and it looks as though we can expect the release of a full length album some time around September this year.

The Kooks – ‘Around Town’

Their last single ‘Down’ was released earlier this year and it returned The Kooks to the top forty for the first time since 2008 but now comes the follow up ‘Around Town’. It is another track that is set to feature on their new album ‘Listen’ which is currently pencilled in for a September release. Fans who can’t wait until then can also download the track ‘Bad Habit’ although it is not an official single. Six of their nine top forty hits came from their debut album ‘Inside In / Inside Out’ but it was their second album ‘Konk’ which became their only no.1. A third album ‘Junk Of The Heart’ appeared in 2011 but did not feature any hit singles. The band are set to appear in Germany and Denmark this week but they will return to the UK later in the Summer to perform at the Leeds / Reading Festival. It’s great to have them back and this should add another top forty hit to their tally.

Little Comets – ‘Salt’

This week sees the Tyne & Wear based trio Little Comets release their brand new EP ‘Salt’ on their own label.  The title track has been available to download for a few weeks but now fans can also get their hands on acoustic versions of ‘Little Italy’ and ‘Salt’ while fans who manage to purchase copies of the limited edition physical CD will get new tracks ‘Grow’ and ‘The Daily Grind’.  They are due to appear at Lainfest in Twycross and the X & Y Festival in Liverpool over the next couple of months.  While they have not had a mainstream hit single they have enjoyed four top forty hits on the Indie chart including ‘One Night In October’ which made no.3. Both of their studio albums have made the top 75 and they have a solid fanbase. This is the second of three EPs which are due to be released this year and follows on from ‘The Gentle’.  This will definitely be popular with the fans but is unlikely to reach the top forty.

Peace – ‘Money’

Indie rock four piece Peace release their new single ‘Money’ this week.  It is released digitally on the Sony label along with the bonus track ‘Flirting USA’. It is set to be the lead single from their as yet untitled second album which is due for release later this year. The band are due to appear at the Isle Of Wight Festival later this week while next month they are due to play at Redfest and the Truck Festival. They are also scheduled for appearances at Leeds / Reading and the Boardmasters Festival in Newquay. Last year saw them nominated in the BBC Sound Of 2013 poll while their debut album ‘In Love’ reached no.16 in the charts. To date only their single ‘Wraith’ has enjoyed any success although that still only peaked at no.75. The video has reached over 350k views in its first month while the band are also offering a signed 7″ to fans who pre-order this.

Also released this week are ‘Ping Pong’ by Armin Van Buuren, ‘Drowning’ by Banks, ‘Forest Fires’ by Fred V & Grafix featuring Etherwood, ‘Witness’ by Joan As Police Woman, ‘Show Me A Miracle’ by The Klaxons, ‘Maps’ by Maroon 5, ‘Cold Chicago Morning’ by Ralfe Band and ‘So High EP’ by Rascals.

Next Week…

I think that Ella will hold on for a second week at the top of the chart but expect big new entries from George Ezra and 5 Seconds Of Summer. Don’t forget to stop by next week when artists releasing new singles look set to include Beyonce, Example, Foster The People and Sophie Ellis-Bextor.
