Chart Chat Edition 762 – Week Commencing Sunday 29th June 2014

Introduction

Welcome to edition 762 of Chart Chat, the music review site which has been running for over fourteen years.  You can find us on Twitter as @ChartChatUK so feel free to follow us and pass comment on the weeks new releases yourselves.  As always we will take a look at the current top forty followed by some reviews of the weeks new releases.  There is a new edition published weekly so if you are new here then I hope you will choose to revisit.

Chart Review

There were seven new entries, one re-entry, six climbers, twenty three songs going down and three non movers on this weeks chart. There was a change at the top as Oliver Heldens & Becky Hill went straight in at no.1 with ‘Gecko (Overdrive)’. In doing so they displaced Ella Henderson after two weeks at the top and she fell one to no.2 with ‘Ghost’.

Ed Sheeran held firm at no.3 with ‘Sing’ being the first of ten songs by him on the top 100 while Example went straight in at no.4 with ‘One More Day (Stay With Me)’. George Ezra fell one to no.5 with ‘Budapest’ and Sam Smith also went down one to no.6 with ‘Stay With Me’. Mr Probz climbed back up two places to no.7 with the Robin Schulz remix of ‘Waves’ and Jason Derulo featuring Snoop Dogg were a non mover at no.8 with ‘Wiggle’. John Legend climbed one to no.9 with ‘All Of Me’ and Usher got a new entry at no.10 with ‘Good Kisser’.

One new entry and three further climbers were to be found in what remained of the top twenty. Coldplay were the weeks highest climber going back up eight places to no.14 with ‘A Sky Full Of Stars’ while Calvin Harris went back up one to no.16 with ‘Summer’. Pharrell Williams climbed one to no.17 with ‘Happy’ and Ed Sheeran went straight in at no.19 with ‘Don’t’.

There were three new entries, one re-entry and one climber in the lower half of the chart. Ed Sheeran got another new entry at no.26 with ‘Thinking Out Loud’ while Chris Brown featuring Lil Wayne climbed one to no.29 with ‘Loyal’. Dimitri Vegas, Martin Garrix and Like Mike went straight in at no.30 with ‘Tremor’ and Austin Mahone & Pitbull got a new entry at no.34 with ‘Mmm Yeah’. Finally Route 94 featuring Jess Glynne re-entered at no.40 with ‘My Love’.

New Releases

The 2 Bears – ‘Angel (Touch Me)’

The 2 Bears were formed five years ago and consists of Hot Chip’s Joe Goddard and Raf Rundell from 1965 Records. They have released three EPs (‘Follow The Bears’, ‘Curious Nature’ and ‘Bear Hug’) without significant success though their 2012 album ‘Be Strong’ did reach the top forty, peaking at no.35. Alongside their work as artists they have worked on remixes for various other artists including Metronomy, Santigold and The View. Now this week sees the release of their new single ‘Angel (Touch Me)’ on the Southern Fried Records label. The track will feature on their forthcoming second album ‘The Night Is Young’ which is set for release in September. It is bound to go down well on the dance chart but with the official video to the track only picking up around 10k views per week it looks unlikely to make the crossover onto the mainstream chart.

Ariana Grande featuring Iggy Azalea – ‘Problem’

She may have grown up on popular Nickelodeon shows such as Sam & Cat and Victorious but twenty one year old actress and singer Ariana Grande is a huge talent with a phenomenal voice which some have even compared to Mariah Carey.  Her debut album ‘Your Truly’ topped the charts last year in the US and also reached the top ten in the UK.  Although her Mac Miller collaboration ‘The Way’ made the top ten in the US (and narrowly missed the UK charts, peaking at no.41) it has been her latest single ‘Problem’ has taken her career to a whole new level.  It made no.2 in the States and there is every chance that it could put in a challenge for the UK no.1 next weekend. The lyric video picked up 35m views in its first month while when the official video was uploaded to her Vevo channel it passed 10m views in just four days. The future for her looks very bright indeed.

Chasing Grace – ‘Run’

Next up are the four piece band Chasing Grace who release their new single ‘Run’ this week.  The video to the track has been attracting attention and received over 65k views during its first two weeks of upload to their Vevo account. They are set to play live at the University Of Warwick next week and also have appearances scheduled at the Leopallooza Festival in Cornwall, the Strawberry Fields Festival in Leicestershire and Glass Butter Beach in Abersoch.  Fans interesting in hearing more of their material can pick up a free download of their track ‘Goodness Grace’ by signing up to their mailing list via the bands Facebook page.  The track has picked up some airplay on Radio 1 and should see them pick up some new fans.  However whether or not this can give them a debut top forty hit remains to be seen.

Deaf Havana – ’22’

While Norfolk based rock band Deaf Havana have yet to trouble the singles chart, their 2013 album ‘Old Souls’ did reach the top ten. This week sees them release their new EP ’22’, and alongside the Radio Edit of the title track there are three other songs; ‘Drive All Night (English Hearts)’, ‘Whiskey’ and an acoustic version of ‘Kings Road Ghosts’. It becomes the third official release from the album and follows on from the previous singles ‘Boston Square’ and ‘Mildred (Lost A Friend)’. A video to accompany ’22’ was uploaded to the bands Vevo account at the end of March but has picked up less than 70k views during its first two months. That indicates that this may struggle as a standalone single and with fans already owning the original version of this on the album I don’t think there will enough who want to buy the radio edit to see this become their first ever top forty hit.

DJ Fresh vs TC – ‘Make U Bounce’

Next up is the English producer DJ Fresh who already has five top ten hits to his name including two no.1s and is now aiming for further glory with his brand new single ‘Make U Bounce’. It’s the follow up to his collaboration with Jay Jay and Ms Dynamite on ‘Dibby Dibby Sound’ which reached the top three earlier this year and comes ahead of his new song ‘Flashlight’ which is set to feature the talents of Ellie Goulding on vocals. On this latest single he teams up with Bristol based DJ TC with Little Nikki providing the vocals. The track was originally made by TC back in 2012 but has not seen the light of day until this reworking. The official video to the single was first uploaded back at the start of June while the Matthias Remix was made available as a free download from his Soundcloud page. This should find its way into the top ten next Sunday afternoon.

Hedley – ‘Anything’

Canadian pop rock band Hedley are up next with their new single ‘Anything’. The track reached no.5 in Canada where it has been just one of ten top ten hits.  It has also given them a debut hit in New Zealand where it has reached the top twenty and it will feature on their forthcoming album ‘Wild Life’ which is released in two weeks time. The track was written by the bands Jacob Hoggard along with producer Brian Howes and Jason Van Poederooyen. The video was first uploaded to their Vevo account back in September last year and has received over 2.5m views worldwide since then. Whether or not this can introduce them to the UK audience is likely to be determined by the airplay it receives, though sometimes radio stations can be reluctant to play songs not in the chart.  A vicious circle!  But this would sound great on the radio over the Summer so hopefully it will do well for them.

Mapei – ‘Don’t Wait’

American singer / songwriter Mapei releases her brand new single ‘Don’t Wait’ this week. The track went viral at the end of last year after it was premiered on the website of influential magazine The Fader. The official video to the track was first uploaded at the start of April and managed just under 400k views during its first two months. The single comes five years after she first surfaced with her debut EP ‘The Cocoa Butter Diaries’ on the Downtown Records label. She then worked on her debut album with the French duo Justice but scrapped the final result as she wasn’t happy with it. Now she is finally on the verge of releasing her debut album and she will be hoping that this is a big hit for her. It seems to have been picking up positive reviews from journalists around the internet and looks set to give her a debut top forty hit on Sunday afternoon.

Rough Copy – ‘Street Love’

Rough Copy won an army of fans last year following their appearance on X Factor where they were mentored by head judge Gary Barlow. They finished fourth and just missed out on making the final but went on to sign for Epic Records and this week sees the release of their debut single ‘Street Love’. They had initially been selected for the Judges Houses stage of X Factor in 2012 but were replaced by Union J when it was discovered that one of the trio (Kazeem) could not get a Visa to fly out.  Although the same problem happened again in 2013 this time the others (Joey and Sterling) continued to Judges Houses as a duo although after they were put through to the live shows they were rejoined by Kazeem at the insistence of Gary Barlow.  This is a great first single from them and I hope that it will secure them a debut appearance inside the top forty next weekend.

Sia – ‘Chandelier’

Although she often features on more hits as a writer, Australian singer Sia has featured on four top ten hits. ‘Taken For Granted’ saw her as the headline artist while she has also appeared on the David Guetta hits ‘Titanium’ and ‘She Wolf’ along with the Flo Rida single ‘Wild Ones’. She co-wrote most of Kylie’s new album ‘Kiss Me Once’ and also co-wrote the track ‘Chasing Shadows’ for Shakira’s new album. This week sees her release her new single ‘Chandelier’ which is the first track to be taken from her new album ‘1000 Forms Of Fear’.  It looks set to be her biggest UK hit to date if the worldwide reaction to her video is anything to go by as it has notched up over 21m views since its initial upload to her Vevo account. This looks almost guaranteed to join Ariana Grande featuring Iggy Azalea and DJ Fresh vs TC as the highest new entries on next weeks chart.

Also released this week are ‘The Road’ by Alistair Griffin featuring Kimberley Walsh, ‘A Sky Full Of Stars’ by Coldplay, ‘I Run’ by Embrace, ‘Hunger Sauce (EP)’ by The Family Rain, ‘Chains’ by Gallows, ‘Love Someone’ by Jason Mraz, ‘Walk Me To The Bridge’ by Manic Street Preachers, ‘Groove ‘N’ On’ by Second City, ‘Caught In The Moonlight’ by Si Cranstoun and ‘So Many Men, So Little Time’ by Sinitta.

Changes To The Chart

Next week will see streamed tracks also included in the sales data used to calculate the official top 40.  This could make for an interesting charts, though it is likely to favour the bigger artists. Taking this weeks streaming chart on its own sees Mr Probz at no.1 while Ella Henderson is at no.2, but she was only at no.22 last week when she topped the charts on download sales alone. Nico & Vinz are at no.29 with ‘Am I Wrong’ while the download version does not come out until August. So anything could happen next Sunday!

Next Week…

Despite the changes in the chart I think Ariana Grande featuring Iggy Azalea will debut at the top. Don’t forget to stop by next week when artists releasing new singles look set to include Drake, Jess Glynne, The Vamps featuring Demi Lovato and Will.i.am & Cody Wise.  Until then have yourself a good week.
