Chart Chat Edition 765 – Week Commencing Sunday 20th July 2014

Welcome to edition 765 of Chart Chat, the music review site which has been running for over fourteen years.  You can find us on Twitter as @ChartChatUK so feel free to follow us and pass comment on the weeks new releases yourselves.  As always we will take a look at the current top forty followed by some reviews of the weeks new releases.  There is a new edition published weekly so if you are new here then I hope you will choose to revisit.

Chart Review

There were four new entries, one re-entry, three climbers, twenty eight songs going down and four non movers on this weeks chart. Rixton made it big in the US first but can now add the UK to their success story as ‘Me And My Broken Heart’ went straight in at no.1. Their closest rival was Ariana Grande featuring Iggy Azalea who found themselves with ‘Problem’ being a non mover at no.2. & Cody Wise fell two places to no.3 with ‘It’s My Birthday’ and Ella Henderson went down one to no.4 with ‘Ghost’. George Ezra was a non mover at no.5 with ‘Budapest’ and Nicole Scherzinger went straight in at no.6 with ‘Your Love’. Jess Glynn fell one to no.7 with ‘Right Here’ and Ed Sheeran went down one to no.8 with ‘Sing’. Oliver Heldens x Becky Hill fell one to no.9 with ‘Gecko (Overdrive)’ and the top ten was rounded off by Sam Smith who was a non mover at no.10 with ‘Stay With Me’

One new entry was to be found in what remained of the top twenty with Ella Eyre going straight in at no.16 with ‘If I Go’.

There was one new entry, one re-entry and three climbers in the lower half of the chart this week. Ed Sheeran climbed six to no.23 with ‘Thinking Out Loud’ while Milky Chance went up two to no.24 with ‘Stolen Dance’. Clean Bandit featuring Jess Glynne climbed one to no.27 with ‘Rather Be’ while Kove featuring Melissa Steel went straight in at no.30 with ‘Way We Are’. Vance Joy completed the picture with ‘Riptide’ re-entering at no.37.

New Releases

Cazzette featuring The High – ‘Sleepless’

Swedish duo Cazzette are back this week and have teamed up with The High for their new single ‘Sleepless’. The digital format contains both the Radio Edit and the Club Edit. The track marks the release of their first new material since their album ‘Eject’ which came out in February earlier this year. A lyric video to the track was posted to YouTube at the end of May followed by a 48 second teaser of the full video three weeks later. As producers they have worked on remixes for a variety of other artists including Avicii, Bruno Mars and David Guetta. A This week sees them off to Las Vegas to play at the Encore Beach Club but they do have one UK appearance confirmed which is at Creamfields next month. There looks to be a good chance for this to crossover onto the mainstream charts next weekend although it will need some commercial airplay if it is going to succeed.

Charli XCX – ‘Boomclap’

Although she has yet to achieve a top forty single in her own right but singer Charli XCX has appeared on the no.1 hit ‘I Love It’ by Icona Pop and more recently the top five single ‘Fancy’ by Iggy Azalea.  Her highest charting single in her own right has been ‘Super Love’ which made no.62 while last year saw her ‘True Romance’ album peak at no.85.  A new album is likely to be released later this year but for now fans will have to be satisfied with this track which features on the soundtrack to the film ‘A Fault In Our Stars’. The single has seen already reached the top forty in the US and New Zealand and it looks certain to repeat that success in the UK. The video to the track was originally uploaded at the start of June and notched up an impressive total of 2m views during its first three weeks. I think that this could be among the weeks highest new entries next Sunday afternoon.

Cher Lloyd – ‘Sirens’

Cher Lloyd is back in action this week having carved out a successful career in the States. This week sees her release the single ‘Sirens’ which is taken from her second album ‘Sorry I’m Late’. The album has already hit shops in America where is has so far peaked at no.12 and it will finally get a UK release in late July.  Her UK no.1 ‘Swagger Jagger’ was never released in the US but she has enjoyed three top thirty hits there which includes a song called ‘Oath’ which did not become an official single this side of the water. The official video to the song was uploaded at the end of April and notched up over 5m views during its first two months. Few would have predicted just how big a star she would become after X Factor but she has worked hard and deserves her success. Hopefully this will go on to give her a third UK top ten hit next weekend.

Cheryl Cole featuring Tinie Tempah – ‘Crazy Stupid Love’

She is back on the X Factor judging panel, and this single should put Cheryl Cole back in the charts too. This will mark her ninth hit as a solo artist and could become her fourth number one.  She has enlisted the help of man of the minute Tinie Tempah on vocals and the video has been creating waves, notching up over 6.5m views during its first month of upload. It will be fascinating to see how she performs against the competition from her former X Factor contestant Cher Lloyd who as we have seen is releasing her new single ‘Sirens’ this week.  A fourth solo album is scheduled for release later this year, and we may even finally get to see some live appearances from her without the support of Girls Aloud. This is a great comeback track, and it will surely be putting in a very strong challenge for the top spot next Sunday afternoon.

Jamie N Commons & X Ambassadors featuring Jay-Z – ‘Jungle (Remix)’

British born Blues and folk musician Jamie N Commons teams up with the X Ambassadors and Jay-Z for his new single ‘Jungle’. The video to the track was uploaded to the XAmbassadors Vevo account in mid June and has been picking up around 100k views per week since then. It follows on from an audio upload at the end of April which has picked up over 1m listens. The track has been featuring in trailers to season 2 of the Netflix TV show Orange Is The New Black and has also been used in the Beats For Dre advertisement which was running during this years FIFA World Cup coverage. He is touring the States during August and September but currently has no confirmed UK dates listed on his website. The inclusion of Jay-Z is bound to boost the tracks profile and I wouldn’t be surprised if this becomes a hit single next weekend.

La Roux – ‘Uptight Downtown’

It has been over five years now since the British synthpop duo La Roux burst onto the scene with their self titled debut album. It contained their no.2 debut hit ‘In For The Kill’ and the chart topper ‘Bulletproof’. Now they finally have the follow-up album ‘Trouble In Paradise’ ready for release and from it comes the single ‘Uptight Downtown’. While it is the first official single it follows on from the buzz single ‘Let Me Down Gently’ which received its premiere on Radio 1 on 12th May.  It even had its own promotion video which picked up over 750k views during its first two weeks of upload. The band have been playing some of their new material to live audiences over the past year and it has been received well.  I think that this will see the band re-establish themselves in the top forty and could even see them in the top ten once again.

Magic! – ‘Rude’

Next up are Magic! who are a Canadian reggae fusion band who look set for a monster hit in the UK this Summer with ‘Rude’. The track has already made no.2 in the US, Australia and New Zealand while also making the top ten in Canada and Denmark. The video was first uploaded to their Vevo account last December and it has notched up over 34m views since then. Earlier this year they guested on ‘Cut Me Deep’ which appeared on Shakira’s most recent self titled album while their track ‘This Is The Time’ featured on the 2014 FIFA World Cup album. While ‘Rude’ looks set to be massive, the follow up single ‘Don’t Kill The Magic’ has failed to replicate that success so they will be keen to avoid having a reputation as one hit wonders. For now though this looks certain to among the highest new entries in the chart next Sunday afternoon.

Maverick Sabre – ‘Emotion (Ain’t Nobody)’

Maverick Sabre enjoyed great success with his debut solo album ‘Lonely Are The Brave’ which reached no.2 and spawned the top twenty hits ‘Let Me Go’ and ‘I Need’. Now he is looking to follow that up this week with ‘Emotion (Ain’t Nobody)’ which is the first taste of new material which will form the basis for his second album. The digital release of the single contains an array of brand new mixes including the main remix featuring Devlin, the Threebar Remix, the Joey Mcrilley Remix, the Splurge Boys Remix and the Dimension Remix. The promotional video to the track was uploaded to his Vevo account at the end of May but it picked up 500k views over its first seven weeks. As the title suggests the song borrows from Rufus & Chaka Khan’s hit ‘Ain’t Nobody’ which originally charted in 1984. I have no doubt that this will be another hit for him.

Neon Jungle – ‘Louder’

Fiesty girlband Neon Jungle already have three top twenty hits to their name in the UK and that total should increase to four this week with the release of their brand new single ‘Louder’. It comes a week ahead of their debut album ‘Welcome To The Jungle’ which itself looks to be on course for a top ten placing. They were nominated at the Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards for the UK Favourite Breakthrough Act but missed out on claiming the award. During the remainder of the Summer they are set to appear at the V Festival in Chelmsford, the Fusion Festival in Birmingham and the Sundown Festival in Norfolk while they have also been signed up to switch on the annual luminations in Blackpool. The band have come a long way in 2014 and look set to have a bright second half of the year. Watch out for this landing somewhere inside the top ten next weekend.

Also released this week are ‘Elevation’ by Erasure, ‘Don’t You Find’ by Jamie T, ‘Always (Route 94 Mix)’ by MK featuring Alana, ‘Fever To The Form’ by Nick Mulvey, ‘Raging Fire’ by Philip Phillips and ‘Shaking In The Water’ by The Xcerts.

Next Week…

It’s going to be close next weekend between Cheryl Cole and Magic! but my money is on the Geordie to triumph. Don’t forget to stop by next week when artists releasing new singles look set to include Bars & Melody, Eric Prydz, Pixie Lott and Zhu. Until then have yourself a good week.
