Chart Chat Edition 766 – Week Commencing Sunday 27th July 2014

Introduction

Welcome to edition 766 of Chart Chat, the music review site which has been running for over fourteen years.  You can find us on Twitter as @ChartChatUK so feel free to follow us and pass comment on the weeks new releases yourselves.  As always we will take a look at the current top forty followed by some reviews of the weeks new releases.  There is a new edition published weekly so if you are new here then I hope you will choose to revisit.

Chart Review

There were six new entries, three climbers, thirty songs going down and one non mover on this weeks chart. Cheryl Cole featuring Tinie Tempah went straight in at no.1 with ‘Crazy Stupid Love’ but Magic! put in a strong challenge to go straight in at no.2 with ‘Rude’.

Ella Henderson climbed back up one to no.3 with ‘Ghost’ while George Ezra also went up one to no.4 with ‘Budapest’. Ariana Grande featuring Iggy Azalea fell three to no.5 with ‘Problem’ and Charli XCX got a new entry at no.6 with ‘Boom Clap’. Will.i.am & Cody Wise fell four to no.7 with ‘It’s My Birthday’ while last weeks chart topper ‘Me & My Broken Heart’ by Rixton went down seven places to no.8. Jess Glynne fell two to no.9 with ‘Right Here’ and the top ten was concluded by Ed Sheeran who went down two to no.10 with ‘Sing’.

Three new entries and one climber were to be found in the remainder of the top twenty. Mr Probz went back up one to no.11 with the Robin Schulz mix of ‘Waves’ and MK featuring Alana got a new entry at no.12 with ‘Always (Route 94 Remix). Neon Jungle went straight in at no.14 with ‘Louder’ and X Ambassadors & Jamie N Commons featuring Jay-Z got a new entry at no.18 with the remix of ‘Jungle’.

There were no new entries, re-entries or climbers in the lower half of the chart this week.

New Releases

Bakermat – ‘One Day (Vandaag)’

First up this week is the twenty two year old Dutch producer Bakermat (real name Lodewijk Fluttert) who releases his brand new single ‘One Day (Vandaag)’. He first got into House music at the age of 12 and built up his musical knowledge by listening to tracks on blogspots. The original version of this track (simply entitled ‘Vandaag’) topped the charts in France and was a top five hit in Austria, Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands. The video to the track was first uploaded at the end of April and has been picking up around 100k views per week since then. At the present time his website contains no confirmed UK performances but he is scheduled to appear several times in France across the year. This is one of those dance tracks which could well crossover and achieve mainstream success so watch out for this in the top half of the chart next weekend.

Eric Prydz – ‘Liberate’

Swedish DJ and producer Eric Prydz has reached the UK top forty on three separate occasions, with ‘Call On Me’ topping the charts while ‘Pjanoo’ and ‘Proper Education’ both achieving no.2 berths. He hasn’t had a hit for six years so will be hoping for a return to chart action with his new single ‘Liberate’. Alongside his career as an artist he has worked on remixes for a variety of artists including Depeche Mode, Faithless, Chvrches, Duran Duran and Inner City. The video to the track was uploaded to his Vevo account on 12th June and picked up around 150k views per week during its early stages. This is a fairly straight forward dance track, and it has tended to be his tracks while rely upon samples which have done better on the top forty. I don’t forsee this securing him a return to the top ten but it could yet find itself in the lower reaches of the chart on Sunday afternoon.

Leah featuring will.i.am – ‘Home’

Although she did not win the second series of The Voice, Leah McFall escaped with her credibility firmly intact and could well become the big success story that the show has needed.  Her stunning reinterpretation of ‘I Will Survive’ made the top ten while her version of ‘Killing Me Softly’ also reached the top forty.  Will.i.am is a shrewd operator and he knew he had unearthed a genuine talent, hence his decision to work with her on her debut single ‘Home’. While the song is pleasant enough it doesn’t really allow her vocals to shine, and judging by this video she is barely recognisable when compared to the Leah McFall who appeared on The Voice. I hope that she does have a big career ahead of her, but I equally hope that her distinct voice and personality are allowed sufficient freedom to express themselves. It will be interesting to see just how well this does next weekend.

Laura Jeanne – ‘English Rose’

Singer, songwriter and fashion designer Laura Jeanne is back this week with the release of her fifth single ‘English Rose’. Not to be confused with The Jam song of the same name, this is slightly more dance focused than some of her earlier material. The chorus comes complete with a horn / brass section and there is even a harmonica in the mix! She formed a unique partnership with Budweiser on her single ‘Dream-Believe-Achieve’ while her festive single ‘Bells Ring Out (At Christmas Time)’ remains an undiscovered classic. She is a regular live performer and this year has seen her branch out from London focused venues to peform at the Isle Of Wight Festival. She is slowly but surely gathering a bigger audience and hopefully this will also help to attract some new fans. Hit singles do help, but I think an album could still do well for her. Hopefully one will follow in the coming months.

Melissa Steel featuring Popcaan – ‘Kisses For Breakfast’

Bradford born singer songwriter Melissa Steel is currently launching a two pronged attack on the chart with her Kove collaboration ‘Way We Are’ doing well for her and this new single ‘Kisses For Breakfast’ gaining an official release this week. It was recently awarded ‘Track Of The Day’ status on Radio 1 and she has also appeared on their sister station Radio 1Xtra. She uploaded the video to accompany the track on 9th June and it picked up over 250k views during its first month. It is definitely one of those tracks which sounds better when the sun is shining so let’s hope the weather is kind to her this week. She is signed to the Atlantic Records label and has been working with producers such as Baby G and Kz on material for her debut album which should get released later this year. She is certainly one to watch and it would be great if this gives her a debut hit.

Naughty Boy featuring Sam Romans – ‘Home’

Next up is DJ, producer and former Deal Or No Deal contestant Naughty Boy who has seen his impressive debut album ‘Hotel Cabana’ notch up four top ten singles including the no.1 hit ‘La La La’.  This week sees him team up with Sam Romans for his brand new single ‘Home’. It is set to appear on the US release of ‘Hotel Cabana’ but it is unclear as to whether there might be a repackaged version also aimed at the UK market. It’s a great song backed with a curious video which is shot from the perspective of a dog! It seems to have gone down well, notching up over 600k views during its first three weeks of upload. Romans voice holds its own, and as an artist / producer his work has seen comparisons drawn with Black Sabbath, Hall & Oates and MGMT. I expect this to add another top ten hit to his growing tally when the charts are announced next Sunday afternoon.

Pixie Lott – ‘Lay Me Down’

Pixie Lott already has an impressive CV with six top ten hits to her name including three no.1 singles. However there will be some concern that despite reaching he top ten her last single ‘Nasty’ only spent three weeks on the chart. This contrasts with the twenty two weeks spent on the top 75 by her 2011 no.1 single ‘All About Tonight’. Her third studio album ‘Pixie Lott’ is set for release next week and so the label will be keen to see new single ‘Lay Me Down’ return a decent chart placing. The video depicts her singing on a sailing ship and was uploaded at the start of June, passing the 750k views mark just over a month later.  For me this isn’t quite as commercial as some of her earlier material and I fear it could struggle. In my opinion I think that ‘Ocean’, the promotional download from her new album, would have made a better choice for a single release.

Rae Morris featuring Fryars – ‘Cold’

Female singer / songwriter Rae Morris has chosen to team up with fellow artist Fryars for the release of her latest EP ‘Cold’. The digital format also contains the Jack Steadman Remix of the title track alongside new songs ‘Skin’ and ‘Eye To The Storm’. Fans wishing to catch her performing live may have to wait for September when she kicks off a series of UK dates in Brighton. This new single follows on from her most recent EP ‘Do You Even Know?’ which was released on the Warner Music label back in May. She has yet to reach the top 75 with one of her singles so at this stage it would seem to be a big leap for us to predict a debut top forty appearance for her. That said it is certainly a decent song which is worthy of a wider audience, so if it can break down some of the barriers in commercial radio and go on to pick up some airplay then anything is possible.

Vic Mensa – ‘Down On My Luck’

American hip hop artist Vic Mensa releases his brand new single ‘Down On My Luck’ this week. The track is released as a standalone download, but an EP entitled ‘Street Lights’ is expected to follow shortly. He started out life as part of the group Kids These Days but went solo following the groups breakup in May last year. Now he teams up with Chance The Rapper in the collective SAVE MONEY and has also released two mix tapes in his own right ‘Straight Up’ and ‘INNANETAPE’. He toured Europe earlier this year with fellow hip hop artist Danny Brown, having last year opened shows for J Cole and Wale on their What Dreams May Come Tour. The video to this track was uploaded to his Vevo account on 12th May and it passed the 1m views mark early in July. He is unfamiliar to the UK audience and so he will need to pick up some mainstream airplay if he is to secure a hit single.

Zhu – ‘Faded’

“Music is Faceless. Let my music tell my story”, or so says Zhu on his Facebook page.  This week sees him release his brand new single ‘Faded’ which comes as both a single track download and an EP of remixes. The EP features the Magician Remix, the Odesza Remix, the Amtrac Remix, the Lido Remix and the Taches Remix. His Soundcloud account has seen several thousand plays for his tracks, and the lack of photographs have kept fans guessing regarding his identity. The promotional video which accompanies the track was uploaded at the start of May, and has picked up over 350k views since then. While this looks guaranteed to be a massive hit in the clubs it also looks set to become a sizeable hit on the mainstream charts. It’s a great track, and on a couple of listen the “I just wanna drive home to you baby” really sticks in your head!

Also released this week are ‘There’s A Place’ by Arches, ‘Hopeful’ by Bars & Melody, ‘Love Junkie’ by Cover Drive, ‘Stand On The Horizon’ by Franz Ferdinand, ‘Follow Your Heart’ by Holly Johnson, ‘Anaconda’ by Nicki Minaj and ‘Skydive’ by O-Town.

Next Week…

I think that the battle for the top could once again be between Cheryl Cole and Magic! but expect high new entries from Zhu, Melissa Steel and Vic Mensa. Don’t forget to stop by next week when artists releasing new singles look set to include Elbow, Jessie Ware, Kasabian and Nico & Vinz. Until then have yourself a good week.
