Chart Chat Edition 767 – Week Commencing Sunday 3rd August 2014

Welcome to edition 767 of Chart Chat, the music review site which has been running for over fourteen years.  You can find us on Twitter as @ChartChatUK so feel free to follow us and pass comment on the weeks new releases yourselves.  As always we will take a look at the current top forty followed by some reviews of the weeks new releases.  There is a new edition published weekly so if you are new here then I hope you will choose to revisit.

Chart Review

There were five new entries, five climbers, twenty seven songs going down and three non movers on this weeks chart. The top two swapped places with each other as Magic! took the top spot with ‘Rude’ while Cheryl Cole featuring Tinie Tempah dropped one to no.2 with ‘Crazy Stupid Love’.

Zhu got a new entry at no.3 with ‘Faded’ and Ella Henderson fell one to no.4 with ‘Ghost’. Bars & Melody went straight in at no.5 with ‘Hopeful’ and George Ezra fell two to no.6 with ‘Budapest’. Ariana Grande featuring Iggy Azalea went down two to no.7 with ‘Problem’ and Charli XCX fell two to no.8 with ‘Boom Clap’. & Cody Wise went down two to no.9 with ‘It’s My Birthday’ and the top ten was concluded by Melissa Steel featuring Popcaan who went straight in at no.10 with ‘Kisses For Breakfast’.

A further new entry and three climbers were to be found in what remained of the top twenty. Oliver Heldens x Becky Hill went back up two places to no.13 with ‘Gecko (Overdrive)’ and Bakermat went straight in at no.15 with ‘One Day (Vandaag)’. John Legend climbed up one to no.19 with ‘All Of Me’ while Ed Sheeran went up eight to no.20 with ‘Thinking Out Loud’.

Only one new entry and one climber was to be found in the lower half of the chart this week. Ed Sheeran climbed three to no.35 with ‘Don’t’ and Vic Mensa went straight in at no.37 with ‘Down On My Luck’.

New Releases

Blonde featuring Charli Taft – ‘Higher Ground’

Their previous single ‘Foolish’ topped the Hype Machine charts and picked up some elusive Radio 1 airplay but failed to make any inroads into the mainstream top forty. Now Bristol based electronic duo Blonde will be hoping for more from their new single ‘Higher Ground’ which sees them team up with London based singer Charli Taft. This week sees it released as a single track download alongside an EP of remixes which includes the KANT Remix, the Grant Nelson Remix and the Tobtok Remix.  Interest in the music video has been relatively slow, with just 10k views per week being achieved early on. That statistic can be a good guide as to how well a track will perform on the charts but it would be a shame if this gets lost along the way as I think its the kind of track which could crossover from the dance chart into the top forty.

DJ Cassidy featuring R Kelly – ‘Make The World Go Round’

It appears that New York based DJ Cassidy has no shortage of celebrity friends. On his last single ‘Calling All Hearts’ featured the talents of Robin Thicke and Jessie J while this time around it is R Kelly who provides guest vocals. Although he did team up with Lady Gaga last year on her hit ‘Do What U Want’ it has been seven years since R Kelly last charted as the lead artist and over ten years since his last no.1 hit ‘Ignition (Remix)’. DJ Cassidy has been working for four years on his debut album ‘Paradise Royal’ which attempts to recapture dance music of the late 1970’s and early 1980’s. Other musicians who have been part of that project include Ray Parker Jr, Nile Rodgers and Michael Jackson’s string / horn arranger Jerry Hey. The first single was a massive hit and there is no reason not to expect this one to go on and at least match that success.

Dr Meaker featuring Sian Evans – ‘Right Back’

Sian Evans is probably best known for providing the vocals on DJ Fresh’s no.1 hit ‘Louder’ but she was also the lead singer for the electronic band Kosheen who had four top forty hit singles and two top ten albums to her name. She has also teamed up with Brains and Martin Eyerer for previous singles but this week she appears on Dr Meaker’s new single ‘Right Back’. It comes released as a single track download and an EP of remixes which includes the Break Remix, the Nathan Dalton Remix, the 12″ Remix and the Nathan Dalton Extended Remix. A couple of weeks saw Dr Meaker appear at the Larmer Tree Festival in Salisbury but this week he is due to play at the BoomTown Festival in Winchester. He will also feature at the Tokyo Dub Festival next month. He has often picked up more recognition for his remixes for other artists but this is a good chance for him to secure glory in his own right.

Freemasons – Shakedown 3 (EP)

There has been a bit of debate in the Chart Chat UK office this week as to whether or not this should be one of our single reviews as it is an EP which contains four different tracks. These tracks will also feature on a full length album containing over 30 tracks which is released in early September. The lead track is ‘Nothing To Lose’ which features Andrea Martin on vocals while ‘True Love Survivor’ includes Hana and has been available to download for a few weeks now. ‘Discopolis’ sees them stand alone while the final track ‘In The Blue’ sees them team up with Emma Rohan. It’s been seven years since their biggest hit ‘Uninvited’ but it has been five years since their last chart appearance with Sophie Ellis-Bextor on ‘Heartbreak (Make Me A Dancer)’. However this should secure them another hit next weekend and it will be a welcome return to chart action for them.

Jessie Ware – ‘Tough Love’

While she saw her debut album ‘Devotion’ reach the top five, Jessie Ware has performed less well on the singles chart. She has come close on a couple of occasions with ‘Wildest Moments’ reaching at no.46 and ‘If You’re Never Gonna Move’ peaking at no.41. This week sees her release her new single ‘Tough Love’ which has already received the “Hottest Record In The World” accolade on the Zane Lowe radio show.  It’s the first taste of material from her second album which we know contains a song she co-wrote with Ed Sheeran. It is produced by the duo Benzel who Ware worked with on her earlier single ‘If You Love Me’. Performances have been few and far between for her so far though she did guest on the Polish version of X Factor and will also feature at this years Wilderness Festival in Oxfordshire.  ‘Tough Love’ could well be the track to give her a first ever top forty appearance.

Nico & Vinz – ‘Am I Wrong’

Norwegian duo Nico & Vinz have been doing very well with this track on the Streaming Chart, and with those statistics now forming part of the overall chart that can only increase their chances of success in the coming weeks. It has already become a massive worldwide hit for them, topping the charts in the Netherlands and making the top five in the US. They have also secured a top ten placing in Australia, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Germany and Sweden. It has been over a year now since the video to the track was first uploaded and it’s a measure of its success that it has notched up over 29m views since then. It is set to feature on the bands new album ‘Black Elephant’ which is the follow up to the curiously titled ‘The Magic Soup & The Bittersweet Faces’. I’m backing this to do well for the duo and this also stands a chance of becoming one of next weekends highest new entries.

OneRepublic – ‘Love Runs Out’

OneRepublic are aiming for a sixth UK top forty hit with ‘Love Runs Out’ which is released this week. It is set to feature on the reissue of their last album ‘Native’ having been delayed as the opening single when Ryan Tedder struggled to write a chorus for it. So it missed the cut on that occasion but is included this time around and looks destined to be a big hit. The track has already reached the top ten in Austria, Belgium, Canada, Germany and South Africa. The eye catching video was first uploaded to their Vevo account at the start of June and it amassed over 6m views during its first month. Their easy going, middle of the road brand of rock lends itself well to commercial radio stations so it certainly won’t find itself short of airplay. As such I am expecting big things from this next Sunday afternoon and this could be around for a few weeks to come.

Porter Robinson featuring Urban Cone – ‘Lionhearted’

Next up this week is the American electronic producer Porter Robinson who has teamed up with Swedish indie band Urban Cone for his new single ‘Lionhearted’. The track will feature on his forthcoming album ‘Worlds’ which is set for release next week. To date Porter Robinson has achieved top ten success with his single ‘Language’ while his collaboration with Mat Zo on ‘Easy’ went on to reach the top thirty. As a producer he has also worked on remixes by Lady Gaga, Tim Berg and Yolanda B Cool & D Cup. The official video to ‘Lionhearted’ was uploaded on 17th June and it picked up over 600k views during its first three weeks. He is set to tour the US in September and October while he will play some European gigs in November. I don’t really forsee this being a big hit but it could still go on to give him another top forty appearance next weekend.

Scorcher featuring Wretch 32, Mercston & Ari – ‘Work Get It’

British Grime artist Scorcher teams up with Wretch 32, Mercston and Ari for his brand new single ‘Work Get It’. He first appeared on the music scene eight years ago when he released his first mixtape ‘Simply The Best’. He later released his ‘Concrete Jungle’ album independently in 2009 and more recently released a third volume of ‘Simply The Best’ mixtape series. He has also worked as an actor, and appears in the Grime collective The Movement. His debut single ‘It’s My Time’ reached the top forty on the R&B chart but that wasn’t enough to prevent him from being released by the Geffen label. The video to this track was uploaded to his Vevo account in mid June and managed to notch up over 100k views during its first three weeks. Hopefully this will go on to make the chart and ensure that he can get some of the recognition that he deserves.

Also released this week are ‘Bumblebee’ by Kasabian, ‘Anaconda’ by Nicki Minaj, ‘Running Low’ by Netsky featuring Beth Ditto, ‘Worlds Apart EP’ by Seven Lions and ‘Mecca’ by Wildbeasts.

Next Week…

Nico & Vinz have been doing so well on streaming that their single stands a great chance of entering at the top on Sunday. Don’t forget to stop by next week when artists releasing new singles look set to include Amerie, Foxes, Nile Rodgers and The Saturdays. Until then have yourself a good week.
