Chart Chat Edition 770 – Week Commencing Sunday 24th August 2014

Welcome to edition 770 of Chart Chat, the music review site which has been running for over fourteen years.  You can find us on Twitter as @ChartChatUK so feel free to follow us and pass comment on the weeks new releases yourselves.  As always we will take a look at the current top forty followed by some reviews of the weeks new releases.  There is a new edition published weekly so if you are new here then I hope you will choose to revisit.

Chart Review

Owing to tighter than normal publishing deadlines we will not be reviewing this weeks chart, and instead will concentrate on new releases.

New Releases

Ashea – ‘Whatcha Thinkin”

Next up this week is another female vocalist in the shape of Ashea who releases her brand new single ‘Whatcha Thinkin” this week. The digital bundle features five different mixes of the track; the Radio Edit, the Club Edit, the Steve Smart & Westfunk Radio Edit, the UK Garage Radio Edit and the Deephouse Radio Edit. She has her own Vevo channel and the music video to this track was first uploaded at the start of July. She was born and raised in Hastings before winning a scholarship at the Laine Theatre Arts School in London. Her career has already seen her working with the same vocal coach as Rihanna and Justin Timberlake while others including Kelly Rowland have been keen to provide her with advice on how to make it in the business. She certainly faces stiff competition if she is to notch up a debut top forty next weekend but it should certainly see her reach a much wider audience.

Ashley Roberts – ‘Woman Up’

Ashley has achieved most of her UK success as part of the Pussycat Dolls but has more recently carved out a career on television. She finished as the runner up on the 2012 series of ‘I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here’ before appearing on the panel of Dancing On Ice. More recently she has appeared on Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway but despite these appearances her last single ‘Clockwise’ failed to make the chart. Her debut solo album ‘Butterfly Effect’ is out next week, but prior to that comes her single ‘Woman Up’. It’s released this week as a digital bundle which also includes the Digital Dog Edit and the Digital Dog Club Mix. The video to accompany the track was uploaded to her Vevo account in mid July but has only picked up a modest 170k views during its first month. I suspect this may struggle to secure her an all important debut solo hit.

Emma Stevens – ‘Make My Day’

Guildford based singer / songwriter Emma Stevens returns this week with her new single ‘Make My Day’. She released her first single ‘A Place Called You’ back in 2012 and it picked up national airplay as part of Terry Wogan’s Radio 2 show. Her reputation has continued to grow with this single making it on to the Radio 2 playlist. She released her debut album ‘Enchanted’ last year and is currently putting the finishing touches to the follow up thanks to her fans who have been providing funds through Pledge Music. Earlier this year saw her complete an extensive headlining tour of the UK, but now all her energies are behind the new album and single. A lyric video to the track was uploaded to her Vevo account on 20th July and with momentum gathering behind this it could yet find itself somewhere close to the top forty next weekend.

Klangkarussell – ‘Netzwerk (Falls Like Rain)’

Austrian electronic dance act Klangkarussell notched up their first big hit in the UK when ‘Sonnentanz (Sun Don’t Shine)’ reached the top three earlier this year and now they will be hoping to repeat that success with the follow up ‘Netzwerk (Falls Like Rain)’. It has already reached the top ten in their native Austria and the top twenty in Switzerland. It has been reworked this year to feature vocals from British singer Tom Cane and it contains a sample from the song ‘Madan’ by Salif. It looks set to become the title track to their forthcoming album which is due to be released later on this year. The official video was uploaded to their Vevo account and picked up over 1m views during its first six weeks. This looks set to be another crossover hit for them next weekend though whether it can replicate the no.3 success of ‘Sonnentanz’ remains to be seen.

Le Youth featuring Javeon – ‘Feel Your Love’

American electronic musician, DJ and producer Le Youth reached the top thirty with his single ‘Cool’ but enjoyed greater success with his Dominque Young Unique collaboration ‘Dance With Me’ which peaked at no.11. Now he is teaming up with Javeon on his new single ‘Feel Your Love’. It comes released as a single track download along with a bundle of remixes which includes the RAC Mix, the Brookes Brothers Remix, the Jonas LR Remix and the Zac Samuel Remix. Next week sees him appear at Jersey Live in Jersey but so far his only dates in September are at the Nocturnal Wonderland Festival. He has been able to transition between the dance charts and the mainstream top 40 and that level of success should continue. This year has continued to see his reputation and fanbase grow and I believe that this will add another top forty hit to his tally next Sunday afternoon.

Lethal Bizzle featuring JME & Tempa T – ‘Rariworkout’

Lethal Bizzle is aiming for his second top forty hit of the year following on from the success of his top twenty collaboration with Cherri Voncelle on ‘The Drop’. This time around he is assisted by JME (who has already guested on hit singles by Skepta, Wiley and Meridian Dan) and Tempa T for his new single ‘Rariworkout’.  The promotional video to the track was uploaded to his Vevo account in the middle of July and has attracted considerable attention for its animation. He has achieved eight top forty singles as a solo artist but his biggest hit came as part of More Fire Crew who peaked at no.7 with ‘Oi!’. As an actor he has appeared in Adam Deacon’s film ‘Anuvahood’ and BBC Three’s comedy drama ‘Bad Education’. He has a solid reputation in the music business and would expect to see this become a hit on both the mainstream and dance charts.

Lilly Wood & Robin Schulz – ‘Prayer In C’

The Robin Schulz remix of Mr Probz ‘Waves’ became a massive no.1 hit earlier this year and now he has teamed up with Lilly Wood for the release of ‘Prayer In C’. This is a track which has already been a huge club hit and has appeared on various compilation albums this Summer. In it’s original format it was a hit for French duo Lilly Wood back in 2010 but the remixed version has topped the charts across Europe including in Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Netherlands and Switzerland.  As such it is hard to bet against exactly the same thing happening here, particularly with the video having notched up over 18m views since it was first uploaded to Robin’s Vevo account back in May. For me this looks certain to be the weeks highest new entry and I think this will end up topping the charts next Sunday afternoon.

Maroon 5 – ‘Maps’

Arguably the biggest artists releasing a new single this week are Maroon 5 who return with their new track ‘Maps’ which is the first taste of material to be taken from their fifth studio album ‘V’ which is set for release next week. They have already had twelve top forty hits to their name in the UK including their million seller ‘Moves Like Jagger’ and their Wiz Khalifa collaboration ‘Payphone’ which topped the charts in 2012. The track has already become a monster hit worldwide with the video receiving over 14m views during its first month of upload. They have never been a band which has particularly appealed to me but with over 34m Likes on their Facebook page it is hard to deny their popularity on a global scale. I expect to see this inside the top ten next Sunday but I feel Lilly Wood & Robin Schulz have a better chance of stealing the top spot.

Wiley – ‘You Know The Words’

Grime MC Wiley had a great run with his last studio album ‘The Ascent’ which contained four top ten hits including his no.1 collaboration with Ms D ‘Heatwave’. The follow up ‘Snakes & Ladders’ is due for release later this year and this weeks new single ‘You Know The Words’ should feature on it. If successful it will be his tenth top forty hit as a solo artist, while he also achieved chart success as part of Roll Deep. Interest in the video to the track has been relatively modest with just 64k views being achieved across its first two weeks of uploaded. However Wiley does not physically appear in it, and there have been some reports suggesting that he did not even want the track released as a single. In my opinion it is not one of his finest tracks to date, but it could still end up becoming another big hit for him next weekend.

Also released this week are ‘Don’t (EP)’ by Ed Sheeran, ‘Heart On Fire’ by Indiana, ‘Spitfire’ by Inspiral Carpets, ‘Dance On My Own’ by M.O., ‘Used To Be My Friend’ by Odysseus featuring Ruby Goe, ‘Your Love’ by Peltsman featuring Kenny Thomas and ‘Fireflies’ by Richard Rawson featuring Tom Parker.

Next Week…

Don’t forget to stop by next week when artists releasing new singles look set to include Beck, The Madden Brothers, Pharrell and Tove Lo. Until then have yourself a good week.
