Chart Review

There were six new entries, five climbers, twenty six songs going down and three non movers on this weeks chart. Lillywood & Robin Schulz went straight in at the top with ‘Prayer In C’ while Maroon 5 got a new entry at no.2 with ‘Maps’.

David Guetta featuring Sam Martin went down two to no.3 with ‘Lovers On The Sun’ while Taylor Swift went straight in at no.4 with ‘Shake It Off’. Nico & Vinz fell three to no.5 with ‘Am I Wrong’ and MAGIC! went down three to no.6 with ‘Rude’. Iggy Azalea featuring Rita Ora climbed eight places to no.7 with ‘Black Widow’ and Ed Sheeran was a non mover at no.8 with ‘Don’t’. Sam Smith climbed eight places to no.9 with ‘I’m Not The Only One’ while Wankelmut & Emma Louise fell five to no.10 with ‘My Head Is A Jungle’.

A further two new entries and one climber could be found in what remained of the top twenty. Lethal Bizzle featuring JME & Tempa T went straight in at no.11 with ‘Rari Workout’ and Sam Smith climbed one to no.15 with ‘Stay With Me’. The other new entry came at no.20 and went to Ariana Grande featuring Zedd with ‘Break Free’.

There was just one new entry and two climbers in the bottom half of the chart. Vance Joy climbed one to no.37 with ‘Riptide’ while Katy Perry went straight in at no.38 with ‘This Is How We Do’. The final climber went to Kiesza who went up one to no.39 with ‘Hideaway’.

New Releases

3LAU featuring Bright Lights – ‘How You Love Me’

American progressive house / electro house DJ and producer Justin Blau returns this week under his 3LAU moniker with a brand new single in the shape of ‘How You Love Me’. A lyric video to this track was made available back in March and it has received over 2.2m listens since then. The official video then appeared at the end of June and picked up over 50k views per week during its first few weeks. Alongside his music career he works extensively with the charity Pencils Of Promise which works to build schools in developing countries. He has no UK dates scheduled but is set to appear at the Nocturnal Wonderland and Tomorrowworld in the US during September. This has attracted enough attention for it to make the crossover from the dance / club chart to the mainstream top forty but we will only find out for certain next Sunday afternoon.

Becky G – ‘Shower’

Next up this week is the American singer, dancer and rapper Becky G who releases her brand new single ‘Shower’ in the UK this week. It has already been a top twenty hit in Sweden and her native US and is now aiming for similar success over here. She has also worked with Cher Lloyd on her US single ‘Oath’ and teamed up with the rapper Pitbull on ‘Can’t Get Enough’, a track featured on her ‘Play It Again’ EP. The video to ‘Shower’ was first uploaded to her Vevo account at the end of June and managed to pick up over 16m views during its first two months. She has been busily working on her debut studio album which is currently rumoured to be looking at an October release. For now I think that this will kick start her career in the UK and if it can gather sufficient commercial airplay then it should become a top ten new entry next Sunday afternoon.

Duke Dumont – ‘Won’t Look Back’

British DJ and producer Duke Dumont has already seen his first two singles ‘Need U (100%)’ and’I Got U’ reach the top spot and now he is hoping to add his name to the list of artists to make see their first three singles top the UK chart. It has already been a busy month for Duke which has seen him appear at Leeds / Reading Festival and the Boardmasters Festival in Newquay alongside regular performances at the Blase Boys Club in Ibiza. The promotional video to this track was uploaded to his Vevo channel in mid July and picked up over 500k views per week during its first three weeks of upload. As with the two previous singles it has an old school club feel to it and would not have sounded out of place in the clubs during the 1990’s. That said it still sounds fresh today and I expect this to be challenging to be the highest new entry next Sunday afternoon.

G.R.L. – ‘Ugly Heart’

So far G.R.L. have only appeared on the UK chart guesting on Pitbull’s top ten hit ‘Wild Wild Love’ but this week sees them go it alone with their single ‘Ugly Heart’. The band was formed initially when Pussycat Dolls creator Robin Antin had decided to try and replace the missing members in her band, but following a series of line up changes they decided to change their name to G.R.L. before working on their debut album. This single has already peaked at no.2 in Australia and it made the top 30 in New Zealand. It follows on from their earlier singles ‘Show Me What You Got’ and ‘Vacation’ and the video to the track has already proven to be hugely successful with over 5m views during its first month of upload. The band is managed by Larry Rudolph who was instrumental in the career of Britney Spears and I expect that this will go on and give them a debut hit in the UK.

Madden Brothers – ‘We Are Done’

The Madden Brothers are Joel and Benji Madden who formerly formed part of the rock band Good Charlotte. As a group they notched up eight top forty hits between 2003 and 2007, but that was the last we heard from them on the singles chart although their 2010 album ‘Cardiology’ did reach no.63. As a duo their career seems to be getting off to a great start with their single ‘We Are Done’ which has already topped the charts in both Australia and New Zealand. This week sees that track get its full release in the UK and an album entitled ‘Greetings From California’ is due to follow in mid September. The video was uploaded to their Vevo account at the end of June but had passed 1m views by early August. It’s a great and catchy tune which should secure itself plenty of airplay over the coming days. As such I expect this to chart well next weekend.

Mausi – ‘My Friend Has A Swimming Pool’

Next up this week are Mausi who are a four piece band looking for their debut UK top forty hit with their new single ‘My Friend Has A Swimming Pool’. It became ‘Track Of The Day’ on Radio 1 on 20th July and having such mainstream backing will certainly help its chances of success. It comes released as a single track download alongside an EP of remixes which includes the Magician Remix, the Star Slinger Remix and the Nathan C Remix. The video to the track was first uploaded on the 8th June and has steadily been picking up around 30k views per day ever since. Last month saw them make an appearance at The Secret Garden Party in Huntingdon before headlining their own show at Concrete in London. It would be great to see this land inside the top forty, and if Radio 1 can continue their support then anything is indeed possible.

MNEK – ‘Wrote A Song About You’

MNEK may not be a familiar name yet to the UK music buying public but he has appeared on Gorgon City’s top five hit ‘Ready For Your Love’ and has also received a Grammy nomination. As a writer / producer he has worked with many different artists including The Saturdays, Little Mix, Kylie Minogue and Misha B. What makes this more impressive is that he is only 19 years old! This week sees the release of his latest single ‘Wrote A Song About You’ and the track premiered on the Annie Mac radio show back in June. It will feature on his forthcoming debut album which is set for release later this year and it will also feature collaboration with Moko, Snakehips and Jimmy Napes. He certainly has the talent to make it as a solo artist and he just needs to secure some all important airplay over the coming days if he is to make a splash inside the top forty next weekend.

Oliver $ & Jimi Jules – ‘Pushing On’

Berlin based house artist Oliver $ teams up with Swiss Jazz House act Jimi Jules for their brand new single ‘Pushing On’. The duo have previously worked together on their ‘Earl’ EP but have yet to enjoy success on the UK charts. Some have likened the sound of this track to the glory days of Chicago House and it is certainly a full on musical assault which includes cowbells, piano chords and a killer bassline. The track also includes some vocal samples courtesy of the English Soulful Jazz revival band Quantic Soul Orquestra and does not fail to deliver. It has already appeared on various compilation albums including ‘The Sound Of Deep House 2’ and the ‘Ibiza Annual 2014’ though neither offers the chance to download the track as a standalone single. The official video was uploaded at the end of July and notched up 50k views during its first week. This could well make the top forty on Sunday.

Sam Smith – ‘I’m Not The Only One’

If you include his guest appearance on Naughty Boy’s ‘La La La’ twenty one year old singer / songwriter Sam Smith has already notched up three no.1 hit singles in his short career while his album ‘In The Lonely Hour’ also topped the charts. Now he is attempting for another massive hit with his new single ‘I’m Not The Only One’ which comes released as a digital bundle featuring four new mixes; the Radio Edit, the Armand Van Helden Remix, the Grant Nelson Remix and Armand Van Heldens Dat Shiznit Iz Slammin’ Remix. He had a lot to live up to this year having won the BBC Sound Of 2014 Poll and the Critics Choice Award at the BRITs but with his impressive chart record he has certainly delivered. This will become another big hit next weekend but it certainly faces some other strong challengers if it is to keep his run of no.1 hits coming.

The Script – ‘Superheroes’

Irish rock band The Script have seven top forty hits to their name and should be adding another one next weekend with their new single ‘Superheroes’. It follows on from their promotional single ‘It’s Not Right For You’ which reached the top fifty recently. Both tracks will feature on their fourth studio album ‘No Sound Without Silence’ which is set for release in two weeks time. The band enjoyed their biggest hit with ‘Hall Of Fame’ which came at the same time as singer Danny O’Donoghue was appearing as a judge on The Voice, and the track even featured fellow judge An official audio version of the track was uploaded on 21st July and quickly picked up over 1.5m listens during its first two weeks. This is almost certain to be one of the big new entries next weekend but I’m not sure it will do enough to become their second chart topper.

Tove Lo – ‘Not On Drugs’

Rounding off this weeks look at the new release singles is the Swedish singer / songwriter Tove Lo who is back in action this week with her new single ‘Not On Drugs’. It follows hot on the heels of her previous single ‘Stay High’ which saw her top the charts in the Netherlands before reaching the top ten in the UK, Australia and New Zealand. The track was a remix of her earlier single ‘Habits’ which made the US top forty prior to the new version being released. As a songwriter her credits include work with Girls Aloud, Victoria Justice, Icona Pop and the most recent single by The Saturdays ‘What Are You Waiting For’. Interest in the single seems to be relatively high with a lyric video attracting over 350k views and a live performance at The Great Escape notching up over 200k views. I think that this will secure her another top forty hit next Sunday afternoon.

Also released this week are ‘Staring At The Sun’ by Anastacia, ‘Heart Is A Drum’ by Beck, ‘Heartbroken’ by Claudia Brucken, ‘Love Too Deep’ by Fereck Dawn & Redondo, ‘My Offence’ by Hercules & Love Affair, ‘E.N.D.’ by The Magic Numbers and ‘Lifespan EP’ by Vaults.

Next Week…

Don’t forget to stop by next week when artist releasing new singles look set to include 5 Seconds Of Summer, Amelia Lily, Benny Benassi featuring Gary Go and Train. Until then have yourself a good week.
