Chart Chat Edition 773 – Week Commencing Sunday 14th September 2014

Introduction

Welcome to edition 773 of Chart Chat, the music review site which has been running for over fourteen years.  You can find us on Twitter as @ChartChatUK so feel free to follow us and pass comment on the weeks new releases yourselves.  As always we will take a look at the current top forty followed by some reviews of the weeks new releases.  There is a new edition published weekly so if you are new here then I hope you will choose to revisit.

Chart Review

There were three new entries, one re-entry, nine climbers, twenty six songs going down and one non mover on this weeks chart. There was a brand new no.1 as Calvin Harris enjoyed his seventh UK chart topper with a little help from John Newman on ‘Blame’. As a result Robin Schulz & LILLYWOOD fell one to no.2 with ‘Prayer In C’.

Sam Smith climbed two to no.3 with ‘I’m Not The Only One’ and Taylor Swift went up two to no.4 with ‘Shake It Off’. Iggy Azalea featuring Rita Ora fell one to no.5 with ‘Black Widow’ and Ten Walls went straight in at no.6 with ‘Walking With Elephants’. 5 Seconds Of Summer climbed thirty one places to no.7 with ‘Amnesia’ and The Script went down five to no.8 with ‘Superheroes’. MAGIC! got a non mover at no.9 with ‘Rude’ and Chris Brown featuring Usher & Rick Ross went straight in at no.10 with ‘New Flame’.

A further three climbers were to be found in what remained of the top twenty. Sam Smith went up one to no.15 with ‘Stay With Me’ and Mr Probz climbed four to no.16 with the Robin Schulz mix of ‘Waves’. Finally George Ezra went up seven to no.20 with ‘Blame It On Me’.

There was one new entry, one re-entry and two climbers in the lower half of the chart. Despite only being on sale since Wednesday Fall Out Boy still sold enough to enter at no.22 with ‘Centuries’ while John Legend went back up one to no.23 with ‘All Of Me’. A Great Big World featuring Christina Aguilera re-entered at no.26 with ‘Say Something’ and Clean Bandit featuring Jess Glynne climbed back up two to no.29 with ‘Rather Be’.

New Releases

Avec Sans – ‘All Of Time’

First up are Avec Sans who are a duo consisting of Alice Fox and Jack St James, and this week sees them release their new single ‘All Of Time’. It is released as a digital bundle containing four new mixes; the Mausi Remix, the backstroke Remix, the Brightly Coloured Remix and the Radio Edit. The duo have drawn comparisons with the electronic band Chvrches while Pop Justice were one of many sites who have been tipping them for big things in 2014. An official video to accompany the track was uploaded on 20th August but picked up less than 3,000 views before the end of the month. Fans who like their Facebook page can gain access to stream the bands back catalogue for free on their Soundcloud page. While this is a breath of fresh air I fear that a lack of commercial airplay may just scupper its chances of appearing inside the top forty.

Cris Cab – ‘Liar Liar’

American singer songwriter Chris Cab releases his new single ‘Liar Liar’ this week and he will be hoping to replicate the success that the track has already enjoyed in the rest of Europe. To date it has managed to achieve top ten status in a variety of countries including Austria, France, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands. The video to the track features a guest appearance from man of the moment Pharrell Williams and has received over 30m views since it was first uploaded to his Vevo channel in October last year. The track features on his album ‘Where I Belong’ which is currently due to be released on 22nd September and has already reached the top thirty in Switzeland although its performance elsewhere has been more modest. Airplay in the UK seems to have been a little sluggish and he will need to turn that around if he is to enter the charts next weekend.

Jacob Banks – ‘Move With You’

He has already appeared on the Chase & Status hit ‘Alive’ and the Wretch 32 single ‘Doing Ok’ but this week sees singer Jacob Banks branching out on his own with his new single ‘Move With You’. He has been catching the eye of record label executives for some time now, winning the Adidas ‘Are You In’ music competition, the Birmingham heat of MOBO UnSung in 2012 and also becoming the first unsigned artist to appear on the BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge. Last year saw him release his debut EP ‘The Monologue’ which featured eight tracks and the video to the lead track ‘Worthy’ picked up over 450k views. The video to this track has been picking up plenty of attention since it was uploaded at the end of July. He now has the backing of the Warner Brothers record label and looks set to translate his undoubted talent into download sales.

Joel Compass – ‘Girlfriends’

British R&B and soul singer Joel Compass is back in action with his new single ‘Girlfriends’ this week.  It’s the follow up to his debut top forty hit ‘Forgive Me’ which made no.34 upon its release earlier this year. The track had been as high as no.26 in the midweek sales flash. Both tracks will feature on his forthcoming album ‘Science’ although that may not receive its release until 2015. He did however release a six track mixtape in July of this year on the Black Butter label with lead track ‘Silverstone’ receiving the most attention and he also made an appearance at the Bingley Music Live Festival in Bradford last month. The video which accompanies ‘Girlfriends’ was uploaded to his Vevo account in early August and it notched up over 230k views during its first month. I really like this and think that it will go on to give him a second top forty hit.

Professor Green featuring Tori Kelly – ‘Lullaby’

Although there have been a couple of promotional releases this marks the first official single to come from Professor Green’s new studio album ‘Growing Up In Public’.  To date he has achieved eight top forty hits with his most notable coming with ‘Read All About It’ which featured Emeli Sande and topped the charts in 2011. Tori Kelly is relatively unknown in the UK but has a vast YouTube following with her Frank Ocean cover ‘Thinkin’ Bout You’ picking up over 20m views. Her EP ‘Handmade Songs By’ was released in 2012 and is still available to download today. This single should secure a top forty berth and as such will help to introduce her to a wider audience. His album features guest appearances from Whinnie Williams, Example, Rizzle Kicks and Mr Probz among others and should find itself inside the top five once it is released next week.

Rubylux featuring Lee Ryan – ‘Lovers Of New York’

Four piece Rubylux have so far gained their reputation from setting up “guerilla” street gigs around the country. However they would love to turn that success into a chart hit next weekend, and they team up with Lee Ryan on their new single ‘Lovers Of New York’. The band have a strong fan base and sell merchandise through their own website including a selection of t-shirts and a live concert DVD. Lee Ryan is most famous for his work with Blue but he did achieve some success with his debut solo album which featured the top three single ‘Army Of Lovers’. Unfortunately his final single ‘I Am Who I Am / Secret Love’ only reached no.33 and plans for his second album were shelved. He was last heard from as part of last years Celebrity Big Brother and he still enjoys plenty of tabloaid attention today. This is an interesting combination and one which could work out well for both artists.

Sarimah Ibrahim featuring Simon J Bailey – ‘You On My Mind’

This week sees the award winning Malaysian television host, actress and singer Sarimah Ibrahim team up with British artist Simon J Bailey for her brand new single ‘You On My Mind’. Despite her considerable success in Malaysia she remains relatively unknown in the UK although there are high hopes for this single in her native Malaysia and Simon has even jetted out to meet Sarimah in Kuala Lumpur to assist with the promotion of the single.  Simon himself played the Boardmasters Festival down in Newquay alongside Snoop Dogg last month and is arguably better known to the UK record buying public than Sarimah is. It will certainly need to pick up some more significant UK airplay if it is to become a mainstream hit, and so I suspect that it may be a much bigger hit in her home country than over here in the UK. It’s a decent song though so hopefully it could still do well.

Sigma featuring Paloma Faith – ‘Changing’

Next up are the dance music duo Sigma’s whose last single ‘Nobody To Love’ topped the charts and that always means that following that up is going to be tough. It became a worldwide hit, topping the charts in New Zealand and also reaching the top ten in Austria, Belgium, Germany and Ireland. They have managed to enlist the help of Paloma Faith for their new single ‘Changing’ and all eyes will be on this to see if it can put in a challenge for the top spot. The video to the track was uploaded on 17th July and was able to pass 1m views during its first month. To date their only other top 75 hit came last year with their Doctor collaboration ‘Rudeboy’ which peaked at no.56. With this being a relatively quiet week for big name new releases I expect this to put in a strong challenge to become one of the highest new entries next Sunday afternoon.

Sykes – ‘Anybody Out There’

Sykes are a London based trio consisting of Julia, Kristian and Will who release their brand new single ‘Anybody Out There’ this week. The track is released digitally on their own label and serves as the follow up to their recent single ‘Gold Dust’ which was released over the Summer. Last month saw them play at the Victorious Festival and their Facebook page features over twenty photographs taken at the event. A lyric video to accompany the songs release was uploaded on 19th August but had only notched up just over 1,500 views by the end of the month.  Despite their talent they are another band who seem unlikely to receive the mainstream airplay that they would need to secure a top forty berth next weekend. Hopefully this track will see them reach a wider audience even if it does end up falling short of chart glory.

Also released this week are ‘An Open Heart’ by Bright Light Bright Light, ‘Dandelion EP’ by Cloud Castle Lake, ‘As Long As I Got You’ by Lily Allen, ‘Delirious (Boneless)’ by Steve Aoki, Chris Lake & Tujamo featuring Kid Ink and ‘Nature Boy’ by Tony Bennett & Lady Gaga.

Next Week…

Sigma featuring Paloma Faith look to have the strongest claim to the top spot but Professor Green featuring Tori Kelly also looks to be a big new entry. Don’t forget to stop by next week when artists releasing new singles look set to include Detour City, Jessie J featuring Ariana Grande & Nicki Minaj, Manic Street Preachers and Wilkinson featuring Talay Riley. Until then have yourself a good week.
