Chart Chat Edition 774 – Week Commencing Sunday 21st September 2014

Welcome to edition 774 of Chart Chat, the music review site which has been running for over fourteen years.  You can find us on Twitter as @ChartChatUK so feel free to follow us and pass comment on the weeks new releases yourselves.  As always we will take a look at the current top forty followed by some reviews of the weeks new releases.  There is a new edition published weekly so if you are new here then I hope you will choose to revisit.

Chart Review

There were three new entries, twelve climbers, twenty one songs going down and four non movers on this weeks chart. There was a change at the top as Sigma featuring Paloma Faith went straight in at no.1 with ‘Changing’ which meant that Calvin Harris featuring John Newman made way, falling one place to no.2 with ‘Blame’.

LILLYWOOD & Robin Schulz fell one to no.3 with ‘Prayer In C’ and Professor Green featuring Tori Kelly went straight in at no.4 with ‘Lullaby’. Taylor Swift fell one to no.5 with ‘Shake It Off’ and Sam Smith went down three to no.6 with ‘I’m Not The Only One’. Iggy Azalea featuring Rita Ora fell two to no.7 with ‘Black Widow’ and The Script got a non mover at no.8 with ‘Superheroes’. MAGIC! were also a non mover at no.9 with ‘Rude’ and George Ezra rounded off the top ten with ‘Blame It On Me’ going up ten places to no.10.

Six climbers could be found in the remainder of the top twenty with the first going to George Ezra who climbed eight to no.11 with ‘Budapest’ while Sam Smith went back up three to no.12 with ‘Stay With Me’. Ed Sheeran climbed one to no.16 with ‘Don’t’ and Ella Henderson went back up one to no.17 with ‘Ghost’. G.R.L. climbed three to no.18 with ‘Ugly Heart’ and Ed Sheeran completed the picture with ‘Thinking Out Loud’ going up five to no.19.

There was one new entry and five climbers in the lower half of the chart. Firstly John Legend climbed one to no.22 with ‘All Of Me’ and Ed Sheeran went back up one to no.26 with ‘Sing’. Sia climbed one to no.29 with ‘Chandalier’ while OneRepublic also went up five to no.31 with ‘Love Runs Out’. Pharrell Williams climbed one to no.32 with ‘Happy’ and the only new entry came at no.35 and went to Hozier with ‘Take Me To Church’.

New Releases

Amelle – ‘Summertime’

Amelle is perhaps most famous for replacing Mutya in the ever changing line up of the Sugababes, taking her place in 2005. During that time she featured on twelve top forty hits (including ‘Walk This Way’ and ‘About You Now’ which topped the charts) and also provided vocals for Tinchy Stryder’s no.1 hit ‘Never Leave You’. More recently she has been working on her debut solo album and also appearing on the BBC prime time gymnastics show ‘Tumble’. Her new single ‘Summertime’ is the first taste of material from her forthcoming album and it hits the shops this week. The original Sugababes line up of Mutya Keisha Siobhan fell short of the top forty last year with their ‘Flatline’ track peaking at no.50 so Amelle will be spurred on to see her single perform better than that. It’s a great slice of reggae tinged pop but it will need some radio backing if it is to become a hit on Sunday afternoon.

Beth Sherburn featuring Lil Wayne – ‘Joker’

She is currently playing to arena audiences as part of hugely successful Saturdays Greatest Hits tour but this week its Beth Sherburn’s turn to take centre stage as she teams up with American rapper Lil Wayne on her new single ‘Joker’. It is actually her third single released so far and follows on from ‘Feels Like I Can Fly’ and her cover of the Duran Duran hit ‘Ordinary World’. It is a great original song, and it comes released digitally on the Purple Circle Records label featuring both the Steve Smart Remix and the Leon Lour Remix. The promotional video which accompanies the track was first uploaded back at the start of June and interest has been slowly building since then with the total views now approaching 30k. However she will need a high proportion of those viewers to buy the single with some fierce competition up against her this week.

Enrique Iglesias featuring Sean Paul, Descemer Bruno & Gente De Zona – ‘Bailando’

There are certainly no shortage of helpers on the new Enrique Iglesias single with Sean Paul, Descemer Bruno and Gente De Zona all chipping in. He has sixteen UK hit singles to his name so far and ‘Bailando’ stands a good chance of increasing that tally still further. We last heard from Enrique back in March this year when his Pitbull collaboration ‘I’m A Freak’ reached no.4 but so far his single ‘Hero’ remains his only no.1 hit, spending four weeks at the top of the chart in 2002. The track already features on his current album ‘Sex & Love’ but there has been huge interest in the track with the English video attracting well over 28m views during its first two months of upload. It always sounds good to hear such latin songs during the hot Summer months and if airplay is strong this could well find itself inside the top ten next Sunday afternoon.

Holly Johnson – ‘In And Out Of Love’

Former Frankie Goes To Hollywood singer Holly Johnson is back this week with his new single ‘In And Out Of Love’. It is released digitally and comes with four new mixes alongside the Clique Unlimited Orchestra Dub Mix of ‘Follow Your Heart’.  The mixes are the Phil Harding and PJS Remix, the Rich B & Phil Marriott Remix, the Douze Remix and the Hans Nieswandt Remix. It has been twenty five years since his debut solo album ‘Blast’ topped the charts and spawned his only three top forty hits ‘Love Train’, ‘Americanos’ and ‘Atomic City’. Since then he has released three studio albums with another one entitled ‘Europa’ due out next week on his own Pleasuredome label. Although he does pick up some airplay on Radio 2 I think he may miss out on top forty glory, with this single but I hope that he can enjoy some degree of success with the album.

Janet Devlin – ‘Creatures Of The Night’

It’s hard to explain why Janet Devlin hasn’t become a bigger star.  Her unique style and beautiful voice won her an army of fans on X Factor, but since then she has yet to make any top forty appearances. Earlier this year saw her release her first full length album ‘Running With Scissors’, which includes a cover version of The Cure’s ‘Friday I’m In Love’ alongside a series of original songs. Her latest single ‘Creatures Of The Night’ also features on the album, but this week it is released as a digital bundle with the Midnight Mix of ‘When You Were Mine’ featuring as the bonus track. The animated video to accompany the single was uploaded to her Vevo account at the end of August and quickly picked up over 80k views during its first week. This does seem to be creating more interest and there is a chance that this could yet provide her with a debut hit single.

Jessie J, Ariana Grande & Nicki Minaj – ‘Bang Bang’

All three of these artists are huge right now so as a trio they could well prove to be an unstoppable force. The fact that an audio upload of the track to Jessie J’s Vevo account notched up 18m listens during its first month demonstrates just how huge this track is set to become over the coming weeks. While Ariana Grande topped the charts earlier this year with her Iggy Azalea collaboration ‘Problem’ it has been three years since Jessie J last hit no.1 with ‘Domino’. Nicki Minaj has appeared on eighteen UK top forty hits but has yet to reach the top spot with ‘Starships’ coming closest, narrowly missing out in 2012. This is certainly to be one of the most played tracks over the coming weeks and looks certain to hold down the top spot next weekend. The exposure will do Nicki Minaj in particular no harm with her single ‘Anaconda’ set for release in the UK next month.

Manic Street Preachers – Futurology

The Manic Street Preachers are back this week with the title track from their most successful album in ten years. ‘Futurology’ is released as a digital EP containing the R Seiliog Remix of the track alongside new songs ‘Antisocialmanifesto’ and ‘Kodawari’. They have enjoyed thirty four top forty hits to date but it has been almost four years since their last appearance there with ‘It’s Not War (Just The End Of Love)’ and seven years since their most recent top ten hit ‘Autumnsong’. With many fans owning the album I fear that this won’t end their top forty absence but I’d love to be proved wrong. The official video to the track was uploaded to their Vevo channel on 10th August but received just over 30k views during its first two weeks. Taking these facts into account I don’t expect to see this appearing next weekend but nonetheless it is certainly the best single released this week.

Redlight – ‘9TS (90s Baby)’

Bristol based DJ and producer Redlight is back this week with his new single ‘9TS (90s Baby)’ and he will be aiming for a third UK top forty hit. Two years ago he scored a top twenty hit with ‘Get Out Of My Head’ but that was followed by his biggest success ‘Lost In Your Love’ which peaked at no.5. He has also appeared on the chart via remixes for a variety of artists including Cee-lo Green, Lily Allen, Rudimental and Rihanna. The promotional video to the track was originally uploaded to his Vevo account in mid August and picked up 300k views during its first six weeks.  Next month will see him play live in Bristol, Bournemouth and London while in November he also has commitments at The Coronet Theatre in London and The Warehouse Project in Manchester. This looks certain to chart inside the top forty but I’m not sure if it will quite make the top ten.

Shift K3y – ‘I Know’

Shift K3y is the stage name of English DJ, producer and singer / songwriter Lewis Jankel. His most recent single ‘I Touch’ reached the top three earlier this year and now he is aiming to repeat that with his new single ‘I Know’ which is released this week on the Sony label. The promotional video to accompany the track was uploaded to his Vevo account on the 12th August and it had passed the 150k views mark during its first two weeks. Aside from being an artist in his own right he has remixed tracks for the likes of Iggy Azalea, Tinie Tempah, 50 Cent and Jennifer Lopez. In particular his remix of AlunaGeorge’s ‘Attracting Flies’ saw him enjoy considerable support from Radio 1Xtra. This looks certain to be a massive hit on the dance charts and I think that it has what it takes to make the transition onto the mainstream top forty next Sunday afternoon.

Also released this week are ‘Shaky’ by DJ Maximum featuring Newbann & Boy Better Know, ‘English Kids In America’ by Lower Than Atlantis and ‘Give Me Something EP’ by Seafret.

Next Week

I would expect Jessie J, Ariana Grande & Nicki Minaj to enter at the top on Sunday with their collaboration ‘Bang Bang’. Don’t forget to stop by next week when artists releasing new singles look set to include Ella Eyre, Gorgon City featuring Zak Abel, Jessie Ware and Labrinth.  Until then have yourself a good week.
