Chart Chat Edition 776 – Week Commencing Sunday 5th October 2014

Introduction

Welcome to edition 776 of Chart Chat, the music review site which has been running for over fourteen years.  You can find us on Twitter as @ChartChatUK so feel free to follow us and pass comment on the weeks new releases yourselves.  As always we will take a look at the current top forty followed by some reviews of the weeks new releases.  There is a new edition published weekly so if you are new here then I hope you will choose to revisit.

Chart Review

There was five new entries, two climbers, twenty one songs going down and two non movers on this weeks chart.  Last week saw Meghan Trainor became the first ever artist to reach the top forty on streaming alone and so it was no surprise to see her track ‘All About The Bass’ climb thirty two places to reach no.1. That meant that last weeks no.1 ‘Bang Bang’ by Jessie J, Ariana Grande & Nicki Minaj.

Taylor Swift was a non mover at no.3 with ‘Shake It Off’ and Sigma featuring Paloma Faith dropped two places to no.4 with ‘Changing’. Calvin Harris featuring John Newman fell one to no.5  with ‘Blame’ and George Ezra went up one to no.6 with ‘Blame It On Me’. Magician featuring Years & Years went straight in at no.7 with ‘Sunlight’ and LILLYWOOD & Robin Schulz fell three to no.8 with ‘Prayer In C’. Sam Smith went down three to no.9 with ‘I’m Not The Only One’ and George Ezra climbed back up two to no.10 with ‘Budapest’.

There were a further three new entries and one climber to be found in what remained of the top twenty. Labrinth went straight in at no.11 with ‘Let It Be’ and Ella Eyre also got a new entry at no.12 with the excellent ‘Comeback’. Ed Sheeran climbed one to no.17 with ‘Thinking Out Loud’ and Gorgon City featuring Zak Abel got a new entry at no.19 with ‘Unmissable’.

There were two new entries and one climber in the lower half of the chart this week. Jessie Ware went straightin at no.22 with ‘Say You Love Me’ and Hozier climbed two to no.26 with ‘Take Me To Church’. The other new entry came at no.36 and went to Jamie T with ‘Zombie’.

New Releases

Ella Henderson – ‘Glow’

Although many viewers and journalists were shocked when Ella was eliminated from the 2012 series of X Factor there were some who wondered if it might be the last we ever heard from her. It took her a while to go away and record her debut album ‘Chapter One’ and fans will be able to hear that in its entirety next week. For now fans will have to make do with her new single ‘Glow’ which gets its full release this week. The track was co-written with Camille Purcell who has previously worked with Little Mix, The Saturdays and Jessie J to name but three. It rises and falls in the same way that ‘Ghost’ did, although for me it wasn’t quite as immediate. It is already clear that she has a glittering career ahead of her and this should at least grace the top five. It could even go all the way and provide her with a second consecutive no.1 hit.

Example – ’10 Million People’

Example is back this week with his new single ’10 Million People’.  It is taken from his current album ‘Live Life Living’ which saw him back inside the top ten but equally failed to match the chart topping success of ‘Playing In The Shadows’.  It’s the follow up to the top five hit ‘One More Day (Stay With Me)’ and comes released as a digital bundle featuring six brand new mixes; the Extended Mix, the Kove Remix, the Eli & Fur Remix, the Static Revenger Remix, the Mike Millrain Remix and the Critikal Remix. If successful it will become his fourteenth hit though I don’t see it matching the no.1 status achieved by earlier singles ‘Stay Awake’ and ‘Changed The Way You Kiss Me’. The official video to accompany the track was first uploaded at the end of August and received over 500k views during its first two weeks.  This should certainly find itself in the top twenty next weekend.

Jeremih featuring YG – ‘Don’t Tell ‘Em’

American singer / songwriter Jeremih first appeared on the UK chart with his 2009 hit ‘Birthday Sex’ which reached the top five in the US and peaked at no.15 in the UK. His second album ‘All About You’ yielded another hit single in the shape of the 50 Cent collaboration ‘Down On Me’ which peaked at no.30 and this week sees him aiming for a third UK hit with ‘Don’t Tell ‘Em’ which is released this week on the Def Jam label. He teams up with fellow artist YG and the accompanying promotional video to the track has notched up 1.8m views since being uploaded back in May. It has become his third US top twenty hit and he will be confident that he can replicate that performance in the UK. It also features on his forthcoming third studio album ‘Late Nights : The Album’ and should find itself safely inside the top forty next Sunday afternoon.

Kwabs – ‘Walk’

London based singer / songwriter Kwabs releases his brand new single ‘Walk’ this week. An audio version of the track was uploaded to his YouTube account late in August and it managed to notch up 7k listens during its first week. He was tipped as being one of the artists to watch in 2014 by both MTV and BBC Radio 1Xtra with celebrity fans rumoured to include Jessie Ware, Laura Mvula, Emeli Sande and Joss Stone. His first TV appearance came back in 2011 when he featured on the programme Goldie’s Band : By Royal Appointment but since then his career has started to take off. He is set to play a total of three UK gigs next month taking in the cities of Brighton, Bristol and London. Despite his talent he is another artist who is often overlooked by the mainstream commercial radio stations and as such may struggle to secure a top forty berth with this latest single.

Luvbug featuring Talay Riley – ‘Resonance’

Luvbug are a trio headed up by former JLS singer Marvin Humes and they release their debut single ‘Resonance’ this week. It sees them team up with the British singer Talay Riley who enjoyed a minor hit with her single ‘Make You Mine’ back in 2011. The single is released as a single track download alongside a digital bundle containing four new mixes; the MNEK Remix, the Friend Within Remix, the White N3rd Remix and the Dexcell Remix. The video to accompany the track was uploaded to their Vevo account at the end July and it picked up 400k views during its first six weeks. JLS fans will be keen to check out just what Marvin has been up to following his departure from the group and this will give them a taste of just what they can expect. This should be a top forty hit but I’m not quite sure that it will end up getting as far as the top ten next weekend.

MKTO – ‘Thank You’

American duo MKTO are back this week with their new single ‘Thank You’, a track which orginated in 2012. Back then it reached no.2 in Australia and no.7 in New Zealand. Their last track ‘Classic’ reached the top twenty in the US and peaked at no.24 in the UK. Both songs will feature on their self titled debut album which is due to be released next week. The promotional video to accompany the track was first uploaded in January 2013 and has now received over 10m views since then. They are currently performing in the US as part of the Demi Lovato world tour alongside Christina Perri. The band have a great following around the world and their Facebook page boasts over 400k likes. This is fairly light and poppy, and should receive plenty of mainstream airplay. As such I expect it to find its way into the top forty on Sunday afternoon.

Nicki Minaj – ‘Anaconda’

There is a famous saying that sex sells and if it does then ‘Anaconda’ by Nicki Minaj should be headed straight for the top of the singles chart next weekend. The video to the track set a new Vevo record with 19.6m views during its first day, beating the previous best set by Miley Cyrus with ‘Wrecking Ball’. She has appeared on eighteen top forty hits including collaborations with Madonna, Chris Brown, Nelly, Will.i.am and Jay Sean. She enjoyed a famous stint alongside Mariah Carey on American Idol and became the first ever female solo artist to have seven hits simultaneously on the US Billboard 100.  It’s actually a very catchy song and looks certain to pick up considerable airplay over the coming weeks. As such I expect this to go on to achieve big things and it should be among the weeks highest new entries on Sunday afternoon.

Shystie featuring Jalissa – ‘Stop’

English rapper and actress Shystie is next up this week and she has enlisted the help of Jalissa for her new single ‘Stop’. The single is released as a digital bundle which also includes the bonus track ‘Acting Up’. It has been ten years since her only solo top forty hit ‘One Wish’ though she did make an appearance on Alesha Dixon’s no.14 single ‘Lipstick’. She has also featured on tracks by artists as diverse as Ms Dynamite, Azealia Banks and Estelle. As an actress she featured in the Channel 4 series Dubplate Drama before breaking into films with the Noel Clarke’s 2008 movie Adulthood. The promotional video to the track was initially aired in mid August and it picked up 42k views during its first six weeks of upload. This is a fine track but whether it receives enough national airplay for it crossover onto the mainstream remains to be seen.

Usher featuring Nicki Minaj – ‘She Came To Give It To You’

R’n’b superstar Usher returned to chart action earlier this year with his top ten hit ‘Good Kisser’ and now he is aiming to follow that up with his brand new Nicki Minaj collaboration ‘She Came To Give It To You’. Both tracks are set to feature on his new album ‘Everything You Can Imagine’ which is scheduled for release on the Sony label later this year. He has been enjoying seeing his singles on the UK chart since 1998 and already has sixteen top ten hits to his name with a quarter of those going on to make it to the top spot. This track got its preview via an audio only upload to his Vevo account back in mid July, and it received over 2m listens during its first month. Any new release from him is likely to enjoy plenty of radio and TV airplay so we can fully expect to see this landing somewhere inside the top ten next weekend.

Also released this week are ‘Grizzly Bear’ by Angus & Julia Stone, ‘Cheerleader EP’ by Cheerleader, ‘Tattoo EP’ by Hunter Hayes, and ‘Green Light’ by Mista Silva featuring Syron.

Next Week…

Meghan Trainor looks set to hold on at the top but will face serious pressure from Ella Henderson and Nicki Minaj. Don’t forget to stop by next week when artists who look set to release new singles will include The Black Keys, Jax Jones, Stevie Nicks and The Vamps. Until then have yourself a good week.
