Chart Chat Edition 777 – Week Commencing Sunday 12th October 2014

Introduction

Welcome to edition 777 of Chart Chat, the music review site which has been running for over fourteen years.  You can find us on Twitter as @ChartChatUK so feel free to follow us and pass comment on the weeks new releases yourselves.  As always we will take a look at the current top forty followed by some reviews of the weeks new releases.  There is a new edition published weekly so if you are new here then I hope you will choose to revisit.

Chart Review

There were six new entries, three climbers, twenty nine songs going down and two non movers on this weeks chart. Maghan Trainor held off some strong challengers to hold on for a second week at the top with ‘All About That Bass’ while Jessie J, Ariana Grande & Nicki Minaj also found themselves to have a non mover at no.2 with ‘Bang Bang’.

Nicki Minaj went straight inat no.3 with ‘Anaconda’ while Taylor Swift fell one to no.4 with ‘Shake It Off’. Jeremihfeaturing YG went straight in at no.5 with ‘Don’t Tell Em’ and Calvin Harris featuring John Newman went down one to no.6 with ‘Blame’. Ella Henderson got a new entry at no.7 with ‘Glow’ and Sigma, Paloma Faith & Majestic fell four to no.8 with ‘Changing’.

Luvbug featuring Talay Riley got a new entry at no.13 with ‘Resonance’ and Usher featuring Nicki Minaj went straight in at no.16 with ‘She Came To Give It To You’. John Legend climbed eleven places to no.18 with ‘All Of Me’ spending its 39th week on the chart and the top twenty was concluded by Brian Wilson & Various Artists with their update of the Beach Boys song ‘God Only Knows’.

There were no new entries and just one climber in the lower half of the chart this week which went to Ariana Grande featuring Zedd climbing back up one to no.23 with ‘Break Free’.

New Releases

Bondax – ‘All I See’

First up under the spotlight this week are the Lancaster based electronic duo Bondax who consist of members Adam Kaye and George Townsend. They release their brand new single ‘All I See’ this week on the Relentless Records label. The track was selected as Radio 1’s Track of the Day on the 10th September and has been picking up airplay ever since. It becomes their seventh single, though none of the previous six have gone on to reach the top forty. The band are currently on a tour of Australia, the US and Canada before returning to the UK for some gigs during October. The official video to accompany the track was uploaded to their Vevo account on 21st August and it picked up almost 90k views during its first three weeks. Their fan following is continuing to increase alongside their growing reputation but I fear a top forty hit may still elude them on this occasion.

Charli XCX – ‘Break The Rules’

Although she first started out in the music business six years ago it wasn’t really until Charli XCX appeared on Icona Pop’s no.1 hit ‘I Love It’ that she really came to the publics attention. She followed that up with her first solo hit ‘Boom Clap’ which was taken from the soundtrack to the film ‘Fault In The Stars’ and now she will be hoping for similar success with the follow up ‘Break The Rules’. The track will feature on her forthcoming third album ‘Sucker’ which is now scheduled for release in January 2015. The video to the track was uploaded to her Vevo account in late August and it soon founded itself picking up over 800k views per week worldwide. While last year saw her perform with Marina & The Diamonds she has been booked to open for Katy Perry next year as part of her Prismatic World Tour.  Her stock is certainly rising and I expect this to be a big hit.

Demi Lovato featuring Cher Lloyd – ‘Really Don’t Care’

It shows just how far former X Factor contestant Cher Lloyd has come that this week sees her teaming up with US superstar Demi Lovato on her brand new single ‘Really Don’t Care’. It comes released as a digital bundle containing four new mixes; the Cole Plante Remix, the Djlw Remix, the Digital Dog Club Remix and the Toy Armada & DJ Grind Remix. The track has already made the top thirty in the US and Canada and if successful it would give Demi a sixth top forty hit although I can’t see it matching the top three success of her highest charting single ‘Heartbreak’. It would be a fourth top forty appearance for Cher Lloyd who will have been disappointed to see her recent single ‘Sirens’ peak just outside the top forty at no.41. So if this can chart it might just remind a few people what a talent she is, and attract some buyers to her excellent ‘Sorry I’m Late’ album.

Galantis – ‘Galantis EP’

Galantis are an electronic music and production duo consisting of Miike Snow’s Christian Karlsson and Linus Eklow of Style Of Eye.  Earlier this year they released lead track ‘Smile’ as a single in its own right but this week sees the complete EP being made available to buy including the five other tracks; ‘You’, ‘The Help That I’m Hearing’, ‘Help’, ‘Friend (Hard Times)’ and ‘Revolution’. While they have no appearances planned in the UK they are scheduled to play in Las Vegas, Houston and New Orleans this month. Karlsson has form as a songwriter having had a hand in ‘Toxic’ by Britney Spears and ‘I’m Right Here’ by Samantha Mumba while Eklow co-wrote and produced Icona Pop’s Europe wide smash ‘I Love It’. I think the release of the EP will serve to widen their fanbase but I’m not sure that any one single track included here can be a hit under its own steam.

Jax Jones – ‘Go Deep’

Jax Jones provided the vocals on Duke Dumonts no.1 hit ‘I Got U’ but this week sees him take centre stage in his own right. For those who are unaware of his talents he is a multi-instrumentalist, producer and songwriter who has great promise and potential as his brand new single ‘Go Deep’ shows. He is signed to Dumont’s record label and is also playing live with him with appearances currently booked in Ibiza, Leeds and Manchester. He is also set to headline a series of his own shows in Portsmouth, Glasgow, Sheffield and Bristol before rounding off the year with an appearance at Electric Brixton. An audio only version of this track was uploaded to YouTube back in June but only managed to notch up 76k views during its first two months. I can’t quite see this performing quite as well as his Duke Dumont collaboration but it could still go on to secure him a debut top forty hit next weekend.

Nicole Scherzinger – ‘On The Rocks’

‘On The Rocks’ is the third single to be released by Nicole Scherzinger since ‘Try With Me’ became the last hit to feature on her album ‘Killer Love’. The last two singles ‘Boomerang’ and ‘Your Love’ both reached no.6 but she will be hoping for much bigger things with this latest release. The stylist black and white promotional video to accompany the track was uploaded to her Vevo account on 4th September and picked up over 750k views during its first ten days. She has eight solo top forty hits to her name and has also appeared on top ten hits by A.R.Rahman, Enrique Iglesias and Diddy. In addition she had eight top ten hits with the Pussycat Dolls including ‘Don’t Cha’ and ‘Stickwitu’ which both topped the chart. I don’t expect this to return her to the summit but it should safely secure her another top ten appearance on Sunday afternoon.

The Vamps featuring Shawn Mendes – ‘Oh Cecilia (You’re Breaking My Heart)’

Having already notched up four top five hits from their album ‘Meet The Vamps’ the band are aiming for five in a row with their cover of Simon & Garfunkel’s ‘Oh Cecilia’. The track sees the band’s original new song interspersed with the chorus from the original song. While it didn’t chart in the UK for Simon & Garfunkel it did reach the top five in the US charts. However the cover version by Suggs did make no.4 on the UK chart back in 1996. Now some eighteen years later The Vamps are set to bring the track to a whole new audience and it has already become a live favourite at their gigs. The track also features the talents of Canadian singer Shawn Mendes and is released digitally along with the bonus track ‘Hurricane’. The band have a sizeable and loyal fanbase and few would bet against this being one of the highest new entries next Sunday afternoon.

Watermat – ‘Bullit’

French artist and producer Watermat releases his new single ‘Bullit’ this week. The track has already been a massive hit in Belgium so now we will have to see if that success can be replicated in the UK. It has featured as the Essential New Tune Of The Week on the Pete Tong show and it has topped the DMC Buzz Chart. The video to accompany its release was first uploaded at the end of April and it has notched up over 3.75m views since then. He is currently making appearances around Europe while his next UK gig is due to be on 15th November when he will be at the Qube Project in London. It has now been almost a year since his first EP ‘Sparks’ and his reputation has continued to grow during that time. I think that this will be one of the tracks that makes the crossover onto the mainstream and it could even find itself somewhere inside the top ten next weekend.

Wilkinson featuring Talay Riley – ‘Dirty Love’

Finally under review this week comes London based drum & bass DJ and producer Wilkinson who has teamed up with the British rapper Talay Riley for his new single ‘Dirty Love’. The track is set to feature on a reissued and repackaged version of his ‘Lazers Not Included’ album which is due to be released later this year. To date he only has two top forty hits to his name with ‘Afterglow’ reaching no.7 and ‘Half Light’ peaking at no.25. A TC remix of the track has been doing the rounds on the internet, but it is likely to be the main radio edit which secures chart action. The track secured its first play on MistaJam’s Radio 1Xtra show and that always guarantees it a big audience. In my opinion I think that this is commercial enough to give him a third top forty hit but equally I don’t think that it will quite go on to reach the top ten.

Also released this week are ‘Gotta Get Away’ by Black Keys, ‘Guts Over Fear’ by Eminem featuring Sia, ‘All About It’ by Hoodie Allen, ‘Que Sera’ by Justice Crew, ‘Drunk & Incapable’ by Krishane featuring Melissa Steel, ‘Steal My Girl’ by One Direction, ‘When It Was Ours’ by Paul Heaton & Jacqui Abbott, ‘Sun Goes Down’ by Robin Schulz featuring Jasmine Thompson and ‘The Dealer’ by Stevie Nicks.

Next Week…

One Direction look set to prove the strongest challenge to Meghan Trainor as she bids for a third week in a row at the top. Don’t forget to stop by next week when artists releasing new singles look set to include Detour City, Fifth Harmony, Hudson Taylor and Waze & Odyssey & R Kelly. Until then have yourself a good week.
