Chart Chat Edition 768 – Week Commencing Sunday 10th August 2014

Introduction

Welcome to edition 768 of Chart Chat, the music review site which has been running for over fourteen years.  You can find us on Twitter as @ChartChatUK so feel free to follow us and pass comment on the weeks new releases yourselves.  As always we will take a look at the current top forty followed by some reviews of the weeks new releases.  There is a new edition published weekly so if you are new here then I hope you will choose to revisit.

Chart Review

There were four new entries, one re-entry, fourteen climbers, nineteen songs going down and two non movers on this weeks chart. Nico & Vinz climbed from last weeks no.52 to become a top forty new entry at no.1 with ‘Am I Wrong’ which meant that MAGIC! had to make way and fell one to no.2 with ‘Rude’.

OneRepublic went straight in at no.3 with Love Runs Out’ and Cheryl Cole featuring Tinie Tempah fell two to no.4 with ‘Crazy Stupid Love’. George Ezra climbed one to no.5 with ‘Budapest’ and Ella Henderson fell two to no.6 with ‘Ghost’. Zhu went down four to no.7 with ‘Faded’ and Ariana Grande featuring Iggy Azalea fell one to no.8 with ‘Problem’. Charli XCX went down one to no.9 with ‘Boom Clap’ and Will.i.am & Cody Wise fell one to no.10 with ‘It’s My Birthday’.

Six climbers were to be found in what remained of the top twenty. Oliver Heldens x Becky Hill went back up two to no.11 with ‘Gecko (Overdrive)’ and Sam Smith climbed three to no.13 with ‘Stay With Me’. Sia went up four to no.14 with ‘Chandelier’ and Mr Probz climbed back up one to no.16. Finally John Legend went back up two to no.17 with ‘All Of Me’. and Ed Sheeran also climbed up two to no.18 with ‘Thinking Out Loud’.

There were two new entries, one re-entry and six climbers in the lower half of the chart this week. Ed Sheeran went up twelve to no.23 with ‘Don’t’ and Clean Bandit featuring Jess Glynne climbed three to no.26 with ‘Rather Be’. Iggy Azalea featuring Charli XCX went up one to no.27 with ‘Fancy’ and Idina Menzel climbed two to no.28 with ‘Let It Go’. Fuse ODG featuring Sean Paul went up one to no.30 with ‘Dangerous Love’ and Paloma Faith climbed back up one to no.33 with ‘Only Love Can Hurt Like This’. Jessie Ware got a new entry at no.34 with ‘Tough Love’ and Kiesza re-entered at no.37 with ‘Hideaway’. The final new entry went to Maroon 5 at no.40 with their latest single ‘It Was Always You’.

New Releases

Bingo Players – ‘Knock You Out’

Bingo Players were a Dutch duo when they first topped the charts in 2012 with their classic hit ‘Get Up (Rattle)’ but sadly Paul Baumer, one half of the duo, passed away in 2013 after a battle with cancer. The band decided to continue in name only (as only Martin Hoogstraten remains) which is in keeping with the wishes of Baumer. So ‘Knock You Out’ marks his first release on his own and he will be keen to repeat the success of ‘Get Up (Rattle)’. I think it will struggle to top the charts but I would not be surprised to still see this inside the top twenty. He is still in demand for his remixing skills and earlier this year leant his talents to the Gorgon City track ‘Here For You’ having previously worked with Flo Rida, Black Eyed Peas and Kelis. Whatever happens on the mainstream chart this should certainly become a big hit on the dance charts.

Foxes – ‘Glorious’

British singer Foxes has already achieved three top twenty hits from her debut album ‘Glorious’ and she will be hoping that the title track will make it four.  It’s certainly one of the best tracks on the album and it is great to see it getting its own release. She has also provided guest vocals on singles by Zedd and Rudimental but it was her ‘Let Go For Tonight’ track which remains her biggest hit reaching no.7 earlier this year. This new single has been reworked for an EP of remixes which includes the Mike Mago Remix, the Everything Everything Remix, the Great Good Fine OK Remix and the Zoo Station Remix. The video to the track is another eyecatching film which picked up over 500k views during its first two weeks. Given that the album has been such a success it’s hard to see this quite reaching the top ten but it should certainly add a fourth hit to her growing tally.

Hot Natured – ‘Benediction EP’

This track originally reached the top forty two years ago with Ali Love on vocals. Back then it failed to get past the anchor position of no.40 but this week sees the duo giving the track another chance courtesy of a single track download and an EP of remixes. The digital EP contains the Lxury Remix, the GRADES Remix, the Nic Fanciulli Remix and the No Artificial Colours Remix. The duo are credited by some to be behind the resurgence in the popularity of house music and the track featured on their debut album ‘Different Sides Of The Sun’ which peaked at no.44 upon its release last year. The video to accompany the track was uploaded onto YouTube on the 25th June and initial interest has been modest. Personally I’m not sure whether it can replicate its previous top forty success unless it picks up some serious mainstream airplay over the coming week.

Kiesza – ‘Giant In My Heart’

It’s already been a good year for the Canadian singer / songwriter Kiesza who topped the charts in Belgium, the Netherlands and the UK with her track ‘Hideaway’. Now the challenge for her is to do that all over again with her new single ‘Giant In My Heart’ which is released this week.  So far it has got off to a modest start with the promotional video notching up 500k views during its first two weeks which leaves it some way to go to match the 52m views achieved by ‘Hideaway’. It received its first play on the Annie Mac show in mid June and has consistently been picking up airplay ever since. She has her own distinct look and is rumoured to be capitalising on that by launching her own clothing line under the name “Steampop” later on this year. I fully expect this to be a hit for her but I can’t really see it going on to reach the top spot.

Kingsland Road – ‘Dirty Dancer’

Kingsland Road finished in ninth place on last years series of X Factor and are looking to succeed where many others have failed. We have recently seen Rough Copy drop short of the top forty so the band will have their work cut out if they are to secure a top forty placing next weekend. This week sees the release of their debut single ‘Dirty Dancer’ with an album expected to follow early next year. The album is being partly funded by PledgeMusic which sees fans commit funds up front in return for unique items such as signed merchandise or meet and greet events. Getting back to the single and fans can pick up the main version, the radio edit and an EP which also contains the tracks ‘Walk Away’, ‘Shoreline’ and ‘Never Too Late’. I think that this their loyal fanbase can secure them a hit, but I’m not sure if it can go all the way to the top ten.

Nile Rodgers – ‘Do What You Wanna Do’

He has sprinkled his magic on many tracks over the years ranging from Chic through to David Bowie but Nile Rodgers has yet to chart under his own name.  That could all change this weekend with the release of ‘Do What You Wanna Do’ which comes released as a single track download alongside an EP of remixes.  The EP includes eight different mixes; the MYNC Club Edit, the MK Disko Dub, the Grades Remix, the Chocolate Puma Remix, the Moon Boots Remix, the Eats Everything Haus Rework, the Rob Da Bank Remix and the Silversix Remix. He has certainly enjoyed an upsurge in interest and popularity following his recent work with Daft Punk, and as such I expect this to be a hit. The track was recorded in Ibiza last Summer and was auctioned off to raise money for his We Are Family Foundation with Cr2 winning the auction. So they too will be willing this to be a hit next Sunday.

Redlight featuring LOLO – ‘Cure Me’

Bristol based DJ and producer Redlight has teamed up with LOLO on his new single ‘Cure Me’ which is released on the Polydor label this week. It is the follow up to his ’36’ EP which saw the title track become a minor hit, reaching no.81. He has charted once before with his single ‘Lost In Your Love’ which made the top five back in 2012. He has also worked on remixing tracks for a variety of other artists including most recently Lily Allen, Rudimental and Rihanna. This week has seen him appear live at V Festival in Staffordshire and Chelmsford and next week sees him play a set at Creamfields in Liverpool before concluding the Summer at Jersey Live. The official music video was uploaded to his Vevo account on 8th June and steadily picked up around 30k views per week after then. I think this could well add a second hit single to his tally next Sunday afternoon.

Rizzle Kicks – ‘Tell Her’

Brighton based duo Rizzle Kicks have already achieved five top ten hits if you included their chart topping collaboration with Olly Murs and now they will be looking to add to that tally with their brand new single ‘Tell Her’. The single has arisen from a collaboration they have with Evian water and the video sees a guest appearance from the tennis star Maria Sharapova. It has picked up over 1.5m views so far and the band have also uploaded a short “Behind The Scenes” feature on YouTube. They have firmly established themselves in the charts with both of their first two albums ‘Stereo Typical’ and ‘Roaring 20s’ both reaching the top five and this new single is the first taste of what we can expect from album number three. This should certainly find its way into the top twenty next weekend and could even end up going higher than that.

The Saturdays – ‘What Are You Waiting For’

Hard to believe that The Saturdays already have a Greatest Hits compilation but when you look down the tracklisting you remember just how many great hits they have had. They have had seventeen top forty hits with thirteen of those reaching the top ten although only so far ‘What About Us’ reached the top spot. Now they are aiming for glory once more with ‘What Are You Waiting For’ which is released as a CD single and digital download. The digital format includes the LuvBug Radio Edit, the Alias Radio Edit, a Greatest Hits Megamix, a version of ‘When Love Takes Over’ and a video of The Saturdays Megamix. The video to the track was uploaded to their Vevo account back in June and only took two weeks to notch up 500k views. I think this will add another top ten hit for them so watch out for this being among the weeks highest new entries.

Also released this week are ‘Come Over’ by Clean Bandit featuring Stylo G, ‘Gladiator’ by Dami Im, ‘Break The Fall’ by Laura Welsh, ‘Right Before My Eyes’ by Little Nikki featuring DJ SKT, ‘Sleeping With A Friend’ by Neon Trees, ‘No Other Way’ by Sinead Harnett featuring Snakehips, ‘Games’ by TCTS and ‘Brothers And Sisters’ by Twin Atlantic.

Next Week…

Kiesza looks set to become the weeks highest new entry but I think that the top two will stay the same with Nico & Vinz holding on for a second week at the top. Don’t forget to stop by next week when artists releasing new singles look set to include Bombay Bicycle Club, The Ting Tings, Union J and Wankelmut & Emma Louise ‘My Head Is A Jungle (MK Remix)’. Until then have yourself a good week.
